    Is there a way to manually adjust the air/fuel mixture when you're operating at altitude? Seems like more oxygen less fuel would have helped. A turbo is the only real answer at that altitude. I think a turbo brings the effective altitude in the combustion chamber back down to like 5-6000 feet.

  • @TS-ef2gv
    @TS-ef2gv Před rokem

    I've done Black Bear twice in a '13 Wrangler 2 door 6 MT 3.6 "S" package/3.73, with the only relevant mod being 33" BFG K02's. Otherwise stock suspension and ride height. Both times over the pass it was just me and the wonder pup. The first time I had never been over it before even as a passenger, I had only read some online write ups and watched some videos. No real problems either time, but I can assure you the climb up to the sign from the Ouray side is the "easy" part. The descent into Telluride is much more challenging, particularly The Steps and the upper half of the switchbacks, especially when you have to choose your line and feel your way through it from the driver's seat with no spotter. I don't think I used 4L at all on the way up to the sign, if so only briefly, but the transfer case def got a workout coming down. I would not attempt the descent into T-ride with anything less.

    • @bruceyyyyy
      @bruceyyyyy  Před 7 lety +1

      Just the two way part, the jeep wasn't comfortable going down it and I wasn't comfortable solo'ing it 2000 miles from home.
      I don't think the lift was necessary, just saved some bumper scraping (although it still happened, obviously).
      If I had a better front approach angle the lift wouldn't be necessary. A stock outback could have done this with some caution, mostly against the side walls. Those rocks are so jagged I felt bad for my factory wheels.

      The 3.6 would have been dogging as well. Not as bad but that's the nature of NA engines at altitude, not to mention some added weight. Subaru needs to play catch up and put the 3.6 out to pasture where it's belonged for years. Start offering the turbo 2 liter or bring the turbo diesel here from overseas. Either would have handled this much better than the current options.

      I'm not convinced the 3.6L H-6 should be tossed aside just yet. I think there's still a few places Subaru can go with torque and HP development. Even as it stands now it's a more than capable engine. I do agree that we should get the diesel. That would make a great replacement for the 2.5 L that's currently used in the Legacy and Outback 2.5i. What I would really love to see is a return of the Legacy GT and Outback XT with the 2.0 turbo.

    High altitudes and temperatures over 37ºC (limit load to protect the engine) decrease engine performance even in turbocharged engines. Horse power values are valid until 1000 m height over sea, there is a loss of power about 10 to 15% every 1000 m of altitude due to a low barometric pressure and lower air density. A good air filter condition helps to limit this effect. Video ikusgarria!

      @@bruceyyyyy it’s not the engine causing the lack of power, the cvt cuts power when it is slipping and figuring out which wheels have traction to stop the car from slipping (for example if you were in the snow on a hill, you wouldn’t want 3 wheels that have no traction spinning very fast) . However, while I don’t know about Subaru AT’s, I have seen other all wheel drive automatic cars do the same thing. You can actually bypass the system by disabling traction control, it will stop the car from cutting power. As far as the engine alone is concerned, I bet a crosstrek 2.0 with a 5 speed manual could make it up that too :)

      I had an odd moment the other day when I was doing some video work at a drive in. I was trying to position my Outback to take some shots when the front diff started making clicky noises... It's done it before in snow. I think it's the computer trying to lock the wheel from spinning. Still, it's odd when the power is taken away from you while pressing the accelerator, LOL! It didn't really take anything away, just made a goofy noise. I have seen some video's where the car is crippled when backed to a curb, and it can't climb it.
      It is a little unnerving when something like that happens. Of course, I think that was on the Gen3's.
      Still, awesome footage!
      You need to check out my channel, LOL! I'm making a series about crap from dollar stores...

      At 13000 ft, there's 39% less oxygen, so that engine is making max 107 HP. Looks like it was a warm day, too, which might have robbed another 5 to 10 HP.

    Dude rolled over in the first 8 seconds. Typical Subaru.

    Just stopped watching at :58. You traded gas mileage for peace of mind.

      I'm not sure I follow.
      The car really struggled at those elevations.

    Those poor KO2's. They deserve to be on something more capable than a Subaru.
