  • Summer is here! I find a suprise when I arrive at the cabin after being away for a few weeks. The garden is also back to its wild state it was when I first bought the place. The war against the lupines continues and I start prepping the barn to be repainted.

Getting all the outside maintenance like the painting done while the weather allows, it's going to be looking very different, very fast. I really like that you are sticking with the traditional colours. Can't wait to see how it looks. 👍

Yes a belated Birthday Marcus .Great to have fruit tree as a gift as not only look nice and give fruit but also keep memories. Nice to see the white stuff has gone and for sure nature does take over a bit if you let it. I just picked some cherries from my tree today .Now the weather is better and being able to stay more you should be able to keep on top of things .Good luck with the battle of the Lupins. Have a great week and its nice to see things coming along . 😀👍 💙💛

I love lupines, it’s sad they are invasive. The other wild flowers are beautiful. I think it’s nice you want to keep a wild garden. Happy birthday 🎉

Living there more will also give you a much better understanding of what is needed first to make it work for you. You will also get much more done, every small improvement makes a difference. That power bank is also a great addition, it will make keeping your phone and running some essentials way easier.👍

When you pull up the lupins you could cut the flower spikes off and put them in vases for the house. You can certainly compost them but if you are worried soak them in buckets for a couple of weeks first.

It's amazing how different the garden is looking in such a short time. Here in my part of South Africa it's been really wet and cold, the start of our winter for sure.

It breaks my heart to see those lupines cut down and discarded as weeds. Such a beautiful flower and the bees love them. I guess every beautiful flower is someone's weed. It's like seeing a friend cut down. Such a pity.

While I agree with you, they can be garden thugs. Personally, I cut my thugs for vases inside which takes care of self seeding.

They are classified as an invasive weed in parts (or all) of Sweden, and land owners are required to control them.

    • @elisabethe8055
      @elisabethe8055 Před 15 dny +3

I know it seems sad, and a pity. But lupins are not a native species in Sweden and our bees are not collecting nectar from them and never had cause it is not in their genes. What lupins do here is that they take over and kill the plants our bees do collect nectar from. So with lupins, our bees has less food. They are beautiful but a killer to our native insects unfortunately.

So exciting to see the progress being made in the warmer weather. It looks wonderful. You may find that using a large paint roller on a long broom handle ( or similar) makes painting any walls inside or out much much faster and easier and it is still quiet like a paint brush. Thanks for taking us with you on your journey !!

Everything is looking good in early summer. To make moving the heavy bench easier, just put an old towel or rug underneath the legs and pull on the arms. This will also prevent loosening of the legs on the bench and scratching the floor. How nice you will have cherries to eat in a few years!

Just a few sorts of cherry trees are able to give fruits without other. There are early, middle and late sorts. You have to know what sort you have and need to plant at least 1 other cherry tree near. You havn.t neibours with chrerry trees so bees can bring some other pollen. Or your tree will give just 5-10% of harvest.
And if the tree trunk is alive it will give young branches. Once I made good big apple tree though it took me 5 years.

I understand it can seem strange that he was ripping out all the lupine, in Sweden they are classed as an invasive species because they conquer out native meadow species that bloom all summer and provide a greater diversity of all the native insects, so we have a program where the government are encouraging people to remove lupine from our meadows and to make sure the do not spread to much.

Don't you need 2-3 fruit trees for cross-pollination?
I think you might want to look for common, old small engine gardening tools that people throw out on the side of the road. Many just need a small fix or a caruretor cleaning. A lawnmower, weed wacker, and tiller would help on the tasks immensely.
24:53 I might be wrong, but you might want to check the white-flowering plant around you. It could be Queen Anne's lace, or a type of hemlock, which is dangerous.

Do you consider the lupines like a weed? Is this why you are removing them?are they not helpful for the butterfly habitat? They do grow wild in Canada but many people do plant them in their gardens as well.
