The Sun and also especially fire, has a significant role in iranian history.
I am not sure, if Iranians would agree with my explanation on the flag with Shir and Khorshid.
Ahura Mazda, not Mazda, the car brand from Japan, and Zoroastrianism, is acknowledged as the first monotheistic religion in the world. Fire is a very important part of this old iranian religion. Yazd, a city in Iran, is the center of Zoroastrianism in Iran, unfortunately many people, who are members of this ancient iranian religion,have left Iran by now. In Yazd, people of this religion are still keeping up a very special and specific habit, which is, keeping a fire burning, which already has been burning throughout the last 800 years constantly, without any break time, according to the history. I think, that's quite an amazing thing, and even hard to believe. However, I really felt bad about this elderly Jewish man from Iran, who ended up in the US, being homeless. Isn't it possible, to collect donations for this man, to give him a proper shelter? I have to mention as well, that I am not Iranian, I am from Germany, but married to someone from Iran. As foreign languages are my passion, I learned some Persian (Farsi), so that's the reason why I have dived into Iranian culture and Iranian history as well,a bit deeper than others. You were lucky, that you had the chance to talk to this older man in the shop, who was giving you some insights into Iranian culture. I listened carefully to what he said, about Persepolis, because this ancient sight/heritage from the past, is one part among others, of Iranian's identity. Iranians don't say Persepolis, they say takht-e Djamshid, which literally means: "throne of Djamshid"! The word Persepolis derives from the old ancient Greek language, and means "city of the Persians"!
Polis=city, perse or Pars= Persian. German language and Persian language are from the same language family, so we have actually quite a lot of words in common, or you can get, there is a relation between 2 words, from each language. Example: daughter in German= Tochter, in Farsi = dokhtar. The pronunciation is almost the same. Another one: thunder in Farsi = tondar. If a non native English speaker,as that person probably might not be able to pronounce the" th" correctly, and you hear an "s" or you hear a soft "t- sound", you will come pretty close to how Persian speaking people are pronouncing this word. Freddy Mercury, the singer of Queen, ethnically wise, belongs to this very small ethnicity, which is called the Parsees. Their religion is still the Zoroastrianism. Most of them are living outside of Iran, mainly in India. Freddy Mercury himself also was born in India.

Very interesting. I'm born and raised in London but my father immigrated here in 1977, two years before the revolution. He's not since been back to Iran. He recalls the days when Israel and Iran had strong ties and there were many Israeli's in his capital helping to develop key infrastructure in the country. Iran was prosperous back then, damn.
