2:05 my interpretation (that fits more neatly within the song as a whole) is that the "sunshine" doesn't refer to happiness in life, but rather as life in whole apart from death, and that "this momentary beam of light" refers to this specific, finite life, so that the line as a whole means you won't live forever, but you can live now edit: typo
@@iExist543 no, the interpretation of finiteness of life is likely the correct one here given the nature of the song. "Sunshine" refers to to living another day, in this sense the metaphor refers to living in itself, There won't always be sunshine meaning you won't always be here to live (since sunshine means a new day), momentary beam of light then appreciates this "beam of light" as long as it is. The other interpretation referring to ups and downs of life does not match well with the context of this song since the song talks explicitly about mortality.

Saying this here hoping other people relate somehow- for awhile ive kinda been struggling with identity. And because of religion it made me think i HAD to belive in some sort of afterlife to find peace. But that made me more stressed, thats when i realized i didnt even belive in it. I kinda saw the idea of heaven and hell as some made up story tale. This song kinda helps me realize its ok to not follow a religion, its ok to think this way. And that i should try to just appreciate life and the good moments as it won't last forever and thats ok.
1:26 "If you could pull the lever to carry on forever, would your life even matter anymore?" My intepretation of this line is that if you have the prospect, the promise of living forever and happily in an afterlife or be ressurected to a time of perfection, what would be the point of living here anymore if there's a much better place just waiting for you? Also this is exactly why I hate tiktok. They take short segments of songs, and people will only listen to THAT SEGMENT, and won't even listen to the full song to support their "favorite artist," and would prefer to listen to the lyrics videos or sped up audio edits. And no one actually listens to the lyrics; they just follow the trend. And it may sound odd, but humans have an interesting thing where we are attracted to things others are attracted to (a sadly hence as to why best friends are usually the ones to end up stealing your partners). So if you see a video- or a tiktok, i suppose- that has a lot of likes, you will probably like it too. The fact that so many people will claim that this is their "favorite song/artist" when they don't even actually listen to them fully or support the artists- it's genuinely infuriating. Also, please don't just take up after what other people say and make it your own truth. Discover things for yourself. I love this song so much and I don't want to hear this song out of context ever again. This is basically just Christmas Kids repeating itself but it's worse now.
In the part where he talks about sunshine, I think it is meant to be taken more literally; the sun won’t always be here, and nor will humans, but right now, there’s a momentary beam of light (the sun) and humans should live every moment that they have.
Good job bro. Ive known this song for a FAT minute (a few years) and way before it became a trend on tiktok. now that its actually becoming known im so damn confused.
i figured that out, the song still holds motivational power for a reason though; the idea of turning against society to express what you believe in just creates motivation for me from this song
i didn't even know people were saying it was a song of nostalgia for the lyrics? if you just skim over all of the lyrics you can immediately tell that he's talking about life, death, and everything that may or may not be inbetween?? i got that my first time listening ... ????
I think it's the beat that makes it nostalgic, not the lyrics. Like how Outkast's Hey Ya is considered upbeat despite being about breaking up - "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance." The music feels nostalgic and that's what it's used for.
Man the thumbnail lol. Happy to see honest people. Loved the video. It's quite impressive how much you can put into a 3 minute song, it's a great sing.
You dont have to be angry broo its just a song and everyone likes the beat. I am not looking for an argument but it just feels like a very soothing and nostalgic song to everyone.
Tbh never thought of it as a nostaliga song, more so as the song about life never truly getting better and that it just does so momentarily, but it all vanishes sooner or later, but its comforting to belive it will get better in the long term. But, uhhh probably heavy projection because of a depressive state of mind, but yeah this makes way more sense. Thanks for shining the light on the lyrics with this video. I mostly agree with you on your take of the song except for the sunshine part. I think they are saying to religious people that "sure life may not be forever but you still have time to do something you enjoy"
Ok. Can I tell you why I think people are putting it in their nostalgic edits and what not? I think they are doing that because first off; if you take one part of the song, and put it in an edit. If your a random person, and doesn't know the song, there is no context that the song is about this, at all, unless you know it. Another reason is I think people put it in their edits is because the song kind of give of a like 80s nostalgic summer kind of vibe. At least it does to me. But yeah. That's just what I think. No hate here, I love the explanation because it makes sense. But this is just why I think people are putting it in their edits of nostalgic stuff.
The vibe of this song decives a lot of people since its a joyfull and a bit noatalgic vübe. Meanehile the meaning on the other hand, i always somewhat understood the lyrics juat never put my mind deep into it, always got confused a bit evrytime he said "sure its a calming notion, perpatual in motion" as i didint try hard to tie it to something. I understood it had something with religion and life but never realy tried to understand it. I just use it as a sad song now.
I'm a Christian, too. But you might have missed the point of the song. The singer isn't expressing his desire to live forever on Earth rather than Heaven; he is trying to portray the fact that he would rather live his life in the moment, enjoying the life he has now, instead of spending his entire life trying to get into an afterlife that may not exist. I do, personally, believe in Heaven. As I said, I am Catholic. However, I also believe in many aspects of this song. It's important to remember not to fall so deeply into religion that you forget that you are alive right now. It's important to live your life to the fullest while you're here. That does not contradict following God and the values that he asks of us.
@AutopsyMyDeath oh, thank you. Perhaps that is what the singer intended, as he does sound like a complete Atheist. But I choose to interpret it in a way where I can understand it while also being Christian. I do not think he necessarily intended to bash Christianity. He was just saying what he personally believes in when it comes to the controversial discussion of the afterlife.
Just a strong feeling of disbelief in afterlife and non natural pushing to accept his idea calling other fool 😅 thats the only reason for depression. Thanks for your interpretation i liked the song but now I hate it.
I thought before this video that it was about enjoying the little time you have on Earth instead of waiting for the afterlife, I guess was closer than "It's a nostalgia song!"
I mean personally tiktok is overrated and sucks ass but I find this nostalgic in a way. Only because of the way it's edited in the studio (specifically vocals). Because in March 2020 i went on a trip to Houston and during that trip I discovered the song Sweater Weather by The Neighborhood. Then from that point on whenever i hear that song I think of that trip, as it was a very fun one and was my last road trip b4 covid. Cuz to me, the vocals of notion sound similar in a way to how Sweather Weather sounds, and thus this song also reminds me of that trip. Thats literally the only reason i find it nostalgic. Not even the "famous" line 💀 tiktok shoulda at least looked into their music more like they did with AJR
Checked out the actual music video and yeah. The scenario doesn't quite paint the picture of living life better without religion, but it is critical of religion by the kidnappers/antagonists being some sort of cult.
I do not know how ANYONE couldn’t figure out this song is about a man who is feeling uncertainty about the after life and how it all kinda sounds like a load of bull shit to him.
I just had this song stuck in my head one night from all of those nostalgia shorts and I was listening to the song and was like: hold up… Honestly I fell more in love with the song because it’s pretty much my philosophy.
people using it the way it is is like saying that the ruler of everything is a song about someone with Atelophobia but the ruler of everything is a song about how time is the ruler of everything if you listen to it the music video isn't very fitting to the song
So the song is about forgetting about religion (Christianity in this case) and enjoying life cause we will only live once. So basically what the entire bible is about?!😭
Sure, you have deciphered this song and you have done it rather well. Props to you, my friend. However, music isn’t just what one person or even the band thinks. Look at Freddie Mercury’s music for example: He once said that ‘if you see it, darling, then it’s there.’ in reference to the fact that, if you interpret a piece in a particular way to yourself, then that’s what it means. But people seem to think that their interpretation or the band’s interpretation is the correct one. No, it’s not. Maybe this song does make me feel nostalgic and that’s fine. Btw it isn’t the lyrics that make me feel that way, but rather their delivery and the melody. So, stop thinking this is the only way to perceive music, as it is not. That’s the point of music; to make the listener feel something unique to them and their lives.
That’s what I’m saying!
People think this song is the “song of nostalgia”. Purely because the line “Oh back when I was younger”

I have a lot of nostalgia tied to this song, not sure why, but even I know its not a song about nostalgia.
1.42 imagine it all tooken for granted and your just fucking invisible expect for the ones to fuck around with your head more then it was
I think this song does really give nostalgia vibes too, i get the idea that this song is more about atheism though, thanks for the video
not atheism, just no afterlife
It sounded good when I couldn’t even understand what he was saying.
As an atheist my self i understood the meaning of the song
why is bro calling us idiots we didn’t do anything 💀
it’s funny
This is beautiful; I might have to harass my friends with this video.
Exist, my buddy chum pal. ITS STILL GOOD MUSIC NO MATTER HOW YOU INTERPRET IT ITS NOT THAT SERIOUS 😭😭😭
boohoo get back to your algebra 2 test chum
Damn, you sent him back to second Period
@iExist543 hes right tho lol
@@iExist543you didn't have to do him like that 💀
@@enzobrandt5127i ain’t gonna be nice to him until he fuckin passes his PSATs 💀🙏
It’s actually so annoying to see people say shit like, “OMG the nostalgia!” Like.. tf are you on?

Checked out the actual music video and yeah.
The scenario doesn't quite paint the picture of living life better without religion, but it is critical of religion by the kidnappers/antagonists being some sort of cult.
Some gamers think this "song of nostalgia" but in reality its something else
I do not know how ANYONE couldn’t figure out this song is about a man who is feeling uncertainty about the after life and how it all kinda sounds like a load of bull shit to him.
I just had this song stuck in my head one night from all of those nostalgia shorts and I was listening to the song and was like: hold up…
Honestly I fell more in love with the song because it’s pretty much my philosophy.
I don't have TikTok but it doesn't Suprise me that people misinterpreted it, especially TikTok kids
Same, i dont have tiktok too
I LOVE THE LYRICS AND THE MEANING!!!!!
people using it the way it is is like saying that the ruler of everything is a song about someone with Atelophobia
but the ruler of everything is a song about how time is the ruler of everything
if you listen to it the music video isn't very fitting to the song
although you probably have all ready seen it
This is the same shit as people using Take Me To Church in churches lmao.
REEEAAAALLLLLL
man this song really speaks up for me 🙏🙏 i could write a bible and call it a day
All art is open to interpretation, no need to get mad at another person's interpretation just because you think differently
