"And you dare to call me a terrorist, while you look down your gun." After stealing land and refusing to recognize the rights of a sovereign nation to hold an army of their own. Ireland is a sovereign nation and they have every right to their own army! Stop stealing land that isn't yours! Then you march parades down this land and rub it in their faces! "Go on home, British soldiers, go on home!"

As an Ulster Protestant I love traditional music and feel very moved by the very sincere and honest lyrics that have been written through our more troubled times and in celebration of sacrifice of those who fought and died for what they believed was their personal struggle. Let's hope and pray no more of our people die, but moreso show each other more compassion.

I just returned from a trip to Ireland and meet with 3 of the Hunger Strikers. To hear their stories was powerful and to see the dedication that still exists today by these three indivduals is amazing. That night, I went to a Pub in Derry and the local musicians started to sing and play this Joe McDonnell song. Within the first line of lyrics, everyone joined in, including myself. This day was a moment in my life that I will NEVER forget, and the people will always have a place in my heart.

One of my favourite Irish rebel songs (though mild enough).
About a man happily growing up in a town, meets a partner and wants to do best by his family. But circumstances intervene and his behaviour causes him to go to prison.
He questions (critically assesses) why he is called 'terrorist' - considering what that British had done in other parts of the world.
In jail, he reflects on what led him to prison. He responded with violence to what he saw was injustice and cruelty. Anyway, regardless of the rights and wrongs - he ends up in prison under poor conditions. So him and a few of the other lads begin a hunger strike.
He laments why people don't seem to care.
Lads just trying to do the right thing - thinking and reflecting on the 'why' of things.
Its songs like this that makes me feel proud to be Irish (expressive, creative, reflective, standing up for what is thought to be right).
I think its from traditions and songs and stories that societies grow and learn.

There is no music barr Irish music that can truly touch every fibre of your being. Well for me it does. Much of it can be traced back centuries. I lived just up the street from this man the song is about. A plaque commemorates him on the family wall. F Thatcher! The words she used on the news one evening angered me to the core - "Murder is murder is murder". While these selfless men were dying. That was a woman that was cloaked in blood. Great and truthful song.

lest we forget 1916, everyone goes on about '81, i know this is a very important point of Irish history, but 1916, the rising, those who died which ultimately led to the creation of a 26 county "free state", which i know is not wat was wanted but i believe, and so should everybody else that the creation of the republic in '26 is only a stepping stone to the creation of a true united Ireland, the way god wanted it to be! This may be the greatest song of all time. Hard to argue with these lyrics:
And you dare to call me a terrorist
While you look down your gun
When I think of all the deeds that you have done -
    You have plundered many nations
    Divided many lands
    You have terrorized their people
You ruled with an iron hand
And you brought this reign of terror to my land
God rest ye lads - true heroes of Ireland
