ORVIS - Helios 3 Fly Rod - How To Decide Between D And F Versions

  • The ORVIS Helios 3 fly rods come in two different actions. Product developer Shawn Combs discusses the difference between the two actions and how to decide if your fishing conditions favor using the H3D or H3F versions. The D version favors distance and line speed and the action is faster; the F version is more for precise and more delicate casts at closer ranges. Either action gives you the most accurate fly rod you will ever cast.

Thanks for the great presentation. It's not the same but my son and I tried the Orvis fiberglass rod and missed a couple of fish, striking late, until we got onto it. So between the F and D, I think for my fishing which is in riffle water, the F would suit me just fine but I can pretty well use any rod and adapt to the style needed to maximize my use of the rod. In any event, all of your products, which I have used since my first Brook Trout rod in the late70's, are "gospel" to me. Also it is fun to use various rods and adapt your style with timing and presentation with loop control. The wind is always a problem for me but it is like leading a duck so I shoot ahead of the fish and "hope by guess and by God" that the fly lands in the right area instead of in the grass or a bush. Thankyou Orvis !

I have to say…in recent years, Orvis’ attention to accuracy and repeatability has gotten awesome. My brother and I were working a pool and my NRX’s leader/tippet got compromised…so he handed me the Clearwater 5wt he was using (since he was on “scouting duty”) and it was stupendously accurate/predictable. That got me immediately interested in the Helios and Recon lines. If a $300 Clearwater can hold its own against an $800 Loomis, these Helios models have gotta be niiiiiiiccee…

I have the H3F 5w. It was a gift from my wife and I had no input. I think I would have preferred the H3D. I was recently fishing the West Branch of the Delaware and I couldn't reach a fish. The guide said that he had the same rod and that I probably wasn't going to reach that fish with that rod. I tend to fish bigger waters in Maine and the distance would be nice. On the other hand, the 3F accuracy is wonderful!! I need to let me wife know that I need a H3D (GFL!!) And to those who complain about the graphics--get a life!!

I like the look. It’s different. Will it make a difference in catching less fish? I don’t think so. But they have came back out with new colors for their logo. But honestly I prefer the look of the Recon. I have an 8’4” 3wt and paired it with a the Trout Pro 4wt fly line and it is a beast. No problem delivering small dries or articulated streamers as well. I have to change up the way I cast with those though. But I will put this up against my 6wts any day of the week.

The New Fly Fisher hosts use H3's all the time, graphics are fine, Fly Fisherman know what you have when they see that!

Recieved a 8w F for a gift, and a 6w D for a busted H2 replacement (thank you Orvis!). I'm not a refined enough caster to really experience difference between the D and the F (having just raced equally weighted rods in Cuba), but I do have an opinion on the graphics. I too find them a little flashing and distracting, so I remedied it. Considered busting out the sharpie, but instead custom shrank electric tubing to fit either side of the ORVIS text. Looks much better, adds no weight, the finish of the tubing is the same as the rod finish, and allows me to easily pluck mine out of the lineup when a bunch of em were stacked side by side (as was the case on the recent trip).

i an going for 6w and I have a hard time choosing between the D and F. I will mostly fish for lake trout and occasionally salmon, i live in Iceland and the wind can play a big factor here, but i think the D can be a little stiff for trout fishing or what?
    What do you recomend?

I really think that decal is too bright and loud. It's more style than functional and will probably scare away fish even from a distance. How about doing the opposite and making it stealthy, something more subtle and cool. A bit of color for the paint would be ok, but keep it subtle.
