The Japanese Fenders have always had a great reputation.
this one is excellent
I own a couple of mij teles. They play and sound good. Both weigh north of 8lbs a bit heavy compared to equivalent-priced MIAs also heavier than the two MIM teles I own.
I've stopped looking at MIJs because most of their Fenders have poly finishes, which I can't stand. It took me a few years to realize how much better nitro feels, wears and sounds (yeah I realize it's debatable but for me it's no contest esp as the finishes age, not necessarily new; encased in esp thick poly, MIJs don't allow the wood to breathe and age YMMV).
All my favorite Fenders have been made in Japan. That includes the American Custom Shop ones.
Excellent guitars come out of Japan, not just Fenders. The professional level new Yamaha Revstars are top quality and expensive. I have a made in Japan Anson stratocaster copy guitar from the 1970s and it is simply brilliant.
I definitely want to check out a Revstar someday
I have two MIJ Gretsch guitars.
Whatâs the Japanese word for âperfectâ? đž đŻ đ
@@craig.encinitas the MIJ Gretsch guitars are so damn good. My 6228 is one of my most played.

Luv the revstar.
That might be my favorite Landon Tele. Super cool. My Tele is a MIJ Nashville FotoFlame from the 90âs. Love it with my whole heart. Japanese fenders have soul. Great video!
đžđ
Another great video production, Landon and that guitar is a winner. I recommend the Profile 906 gig bag from Cosmo's Music.
Very nice Landon , I want one. When the time comes ill definitely use your link.
awesome thanks!
I like it , great combination of parts and features. I have those tuners on a Strat and work well. Thanks for the review Landon, it was nice to see up close the tidy workmanship "under the hood" đ
đđž
Iâve got exactly the same one. Itâs amazing. The neck feels so good
nice! then you confirm how great they are too đžđ
Great video and humor!
woah amazing tone in the intro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
great value
Great intro Landon! âșïž
Thanks! đ
Nice video! I'm considering two things now: buying this guitar and starting to work out!
And loooook at those arms someone's been to the gym lifting some heavy solid guitar bodies đȘđ
Tokai is a great buy. Even with the recent price hikes you can get a very well made guitar for just north of $1000 U.S.D. I really like thier goldtop P90 LP model. I'd put it up against anything made in the U.S.
Nice review! Always amazed at the MIJ quality. I snagged 2 of these, one black, one red. One from a Japan dealer and one in the USA. Really amazing workmanship. Vintage style tuners, bone nut, rosewood board with incredibly smooth neck, Alder body, CTS pots and Orange Drop cap for under $1,000. Finish was on par with any US-made ones I have had including Professional, Limited Eds, AV, and a custom shop. I was kind of amazed at the size of the Orange Drop cap! Doing some research I found it was a 0.1uf 600Vwhich is pretty rare in today's world of .047 and .022uf including for Fender. I certainly seem to have no loss with high tones and lose nothing tone-wise rolling off volume. Must be something designed to work in conjunction with the new pickups. Whatever, it works!
thanks for sharing!
I 100% agree with the title of this video!
Love it, more Tele reviews please!
I'm sure I'll do more. in the meantime czcams.com/play/PLUKDOD2AiVCj_nQQ-dOL-PhTlutP3cP6e.html
The best Fender I ever owned, I have great American ones, was a H.R.R Strat. A Fuji Fender. A real Floyd Rose, 22 frets, rounded neck heel, 12â fingerboard radius, Kluson tuners, thru headstock Floyd nut, DiMarzio pickups. Fit and finish were perfect! No gaps etc. I owned to Japanese Ibanezâs that were awesome!
I like that HER model!

growing up I was so poor I couldn't even pay attention.
Keep this on the down low. You should check out the Mickey Mouse Telecaster on the trogly channel. You guys dropped your videos at the same time yesterday
Great video looks to me like Fender Japan teles and Strats are knocking it out of the park I wonder who is making them I always wondered if these were made in the Ibanez Japan factory definitely a sweet guitar.
I'd be curious to know as well
I just bought one in Arctic White. Seriously my new favorite guitar and I have USA fenders đđŒđđŒ
awesome congrats!
I own three MIJ guitars and have played many moreâŠ..always really great!
Thanks, great review, I remember almost pulling the trigger on a strat foto flame back in the 80âs. They were stunning guitars but Iâve never seen one that aged well.
No problem!
Whaou i like it so much. One of my favorite guitar with the Jaguar.
All the best picker's play tele's. Thanks L B. I love my 'goldfoil' telecaster.
Nice! Iâve never tried that model
â@@landonbaileyHighly recommended. Those mini humbucker's make it a tone monster. I sleep with it...
The red one is like $959 now. Perfect ebony fretboard and mahogany body. Looove it.
Fender Japan when it was at the FujiGen factory was excellent. I have a 1993 Stratocaster Floyd Rose Squier Series and I love the neck on that guitar.
do you know where they currently produce them in Japan?
@@landonbailey the Wikipedia page on Fender Japan gives an account of the factories moving around. However, Iâm not sure where they are made in 2022.
My favorite Fender Japan guitar is the Aerodyne series. I own a Stratocaster and a telecaster from this series and the are amazing.
they look cool!
Congrats and welcome to the MIJ Fender Club.đš
That's a fine looking guitar and sh!tty gig bag, the same that came with one of my MIJ Fenders.
Interesting with your proximity to the US, this still ships cheaper than US variants.
For me this comes in roughly $700-800 cheaper than a Pro II. So, it really seems the wise choice. However, I still also have a sunburst Performer tele, which I think cost about $200 more than a hybrid MIJ.
I think the only reason some feel a little dubious about them are the unfamiliar pups. However, given how long they've been making quality Fenders there's little to worry about. People change pups all the time for a variety of reasons. They can be just as easily be changed here.
Btw...i didn't get a notification for this. Been looking forward to it.
Cheers Landon. đđ

I love that most of the guitar you review now is mijs haha i love mij guitars so much! New subscriber here

Iâve found the quality to be at least on par with MIA. If you can get past the gig bag, (sometimes) basswood body and/or hassle to order, theyâre amazing. I usually buy from ishibashi music.
nice! lots of basswood models for sure. this one is alder
Iâm really interested in getting a Japanese Fender myself. My brother has a Japanese Strat from the mid/late 90âs that Iâve played a bit and itâs nice. It has a rosewood board & a humbucker at the bridge & thatâs not my thing on a Strat, but itâs a really well-built guitar.
this was my first time. super impressed with the Hybrid II series
@@landonbailey I Definately like the pickups. I have vintage noiseless in my Tele right now, but this looks like a mod I may consider.
Great segment. I took some time away from gear-channels during the pandemic, because everyone lost their minds. Nice to see the growth. âźïž

I started playing in 1964. Back then all Fender instruments that I owned and saw had split shaft tuners. I never had a problem with tuning stability. I have retro fitted all of my Fenders with the drop in split shafts. IMHO, the newer instruments have those little holes which I find quite a pain to see on a dark stage. All I need to do now is measure the string length and make a 90 degree bend especially if you are using round core strings to lock the windings in place, leave about a 1/2" at the end of the string long enough to put two or three turns, shove it into the shaft and tune. Never, ever had one slip.
I love split shaft tuners
I have 15 guitars. 9 of them are made in Japan. 2 of those 9 are Fender Jaguars, 1 is a Yamaha and the rest were made by the Matsumoku factory. Electronics in the Jaguars aren't as good as the electronics in my MIM Classic series Strat TBH - but the actual feel of the guitars slays it. Only problem with MIJ Fenders is availability.
thanks for sharing! ya tough to find MIJ over here in Canada
Woah I have the original Hybrid 60s MIJ tele I just bought and now I want to know if its routed like that too! I really doubt I would change it but its nice to know you could easily.
Its a really great guitar already. I dont mind not having the tummy cut (though I think an forearm cut would be more useful than a tummy for either, might look weird though)
The vintage locking tuners are so interesting. I hope they dont get marred as I understand you are supposed to use a screwdriver to lock them. I think I wouldnt have minded traditional thumbscrew locking tuners but its nice to have ones that lock anyway.
Mine doesnt have a skunk stripe on the neck however so you need to remove the neck to do a truss rod adjustment. Thats the only knock on it but its not something I monkey around with really anyway.
I bought mine to replace a 52 reissue I gave to a family member and the price for a US telecaster was just way too high. I got mine from Ishibashi (check their website too!) through Reverb and it was $833.33US shipped (used) which I felt like I did pretty good on price. The thing was flawless too, I dont know who had it but I cant find a mark. It didnt have the stickers on it but still.
Lol yeah the gig bag is absolute garbage but what can you do. I dont use a hard case anyway so it would go in the pile in the basement. When I gig I use a double Monobag.
Mine shipped from Tokyo to St. Louis from Wed-Friday, which seems amazingly fast.
cheers!
Thanks from Japan. I've pleasantly found in your talk and manner the young Michael J. Fox/Marty McFly sort of vibe. Black Alder body & Rosewood fingerboard Tele looks really coooool~
Cheers! đžđ
@@landonbailey Landon, appreciate your immediate reply. I'm a big fan of your vids, sharing the same taste for specific gears like Tele, Casino, Princeton, etc. Keep goin' on!
I'd rather my guitar be made in Japan than some American factories I've seen. I don't think I've ever seen a poorly made Japanese guitar, but American I've seen many. That black is white is perfect! I'd love it if the made a Tele with the styling of an LP custom. That'd be cool
I had a Pro Deluxe Shawbucker Tele that was great but really dirty inside
Gorgeous Tele. I have a mij Jazzmaster and a Mustang and I love them!
nice!
We get a lot of made in Japan guitars here in the Philippines, they are not all quality made guitars, the fenders are good, but there are some nice guitars coming from Indonesia now
thanks for sharing :)
That was one clean cavity.
one of the best I've seen
Been playing this for the past 1 year. Was never a tele guy but boooyyyyyyy, I am converted!
great model!
Wow that TackLife nut measurement tool came dangerously close to scratching your wall at 6:05
ah that wall has already taken a beating :)
Love it. My American Performer Tele came with a similar case đ€đž
some of the MIJ models have a Deluxe Gig Bag. I don't know the difference
@@landonbailey They're the fancy, thick padded ones that you can wear like a backpack so everybody knows you're cool
That's the gig bag that comes in those boxes with a Squier guitar, a ten watt amp, a strap and a cord, and some picks.
you're right! I did a Squier Starter pack video last year and it is the same bag
@@landonbailey That's what this was missing: the Frontman 10!
Thanks ks Landon.... i figured you might get tempted when browsing the MIJ line. Always wanted a MIJ fender. I'd rather have this than a made in US. I mean in what other category of product does the US make things better than Japan? Can't wait for your comparison video đđ
My GAS for Fender MIJ is pretty high right now đ
Great video. How do you find the neck compared to the American Pro II? My worry is I might struggle if its quite a bit thicker than the AM Pro as that's become my go to.
It's very similar to the Pro II quality wise. It's a Modern C and a bit thinner than the Deep C on the Pro II. I'll do a comparison video soon
I have two black telecasters! One mim with mirror pickguard and one squier custom baritone telecaster w/white pickguard. P.S. I love how you sneak in those Radiohead riffs

I ordered a Charcoal Frost metallic HSS Affinity Strat pack. It arrived with the same gig bag you have with your Tele.
it's true! I saw it in a pack I bought last year
If you fully load a tele with that route it's called a Nashville tele which might be accompanied by a bigsby or a Duesenberg multibender
ya cool, they have a MIJ Bigsby model as well
Iâve actually been cross-shopping this with the Reverend Pete Anderson Eastsider T! Which is would also love to see on your channel đ„č
that's another brand to check out on my list. I like the Reverend headstocks :)
@@landonbailey the one I mentioned is the only one I've seen that doesn't have that headstock! It looks like a Fender headstock
A most excellent guitar, rolled edges AND the tummy cut đ. The only negative about this is the cheapy gig-bag. A well-padded, higher quality gig-bag would have really brought this over the top.
agreed! no real negatives for the guitar itself
The ferrules are in a straight line!
always a bonus! đ
Awesome
A bit off-topic, but it needs to be said:
The "influencers" pushed so hard for the PRS Mayer SE to be the guitar hit of the year, but instead it looks like it's gonna be the Yamaha RevStar P90s Standard. LOL.
(BTW: Beautiful Tele, but a bit bland-sounding for my taste.)
- Love ya, Lando!
It's probably PRS that pushed the influencers to push it, but I know what you're saying
I like the way you keeping model name label stickers. Fender or Squier. Cuz I exactly do the same with my Fenders and Squiersđ Kinda love the look those stickers on pickgaurds. Should I print them on my pickguards? If I could do it, I would like to!
ya I like the stickers. I put them with the warranty card
if i still had my japanese jazzmaster 1996ish i wold be a happy thing.
MIJ Jazzmaster is on my wish list too... just wish they would use proper JM pickups in most of them instead of disguised Strat pickups. I have a Matsumoku "JM" like the one Kevin Shields had but it's Gibson scale. Plays great but it's not quite a JM and not quite a Jag. Pickups are like low output mini-P90s and sound awesome.
You should try the JV series they are made at the famous fujigen factory where all the old amazing MIJ fenders and other guitars were made, mine is top quality I really canât ask for any improvements right out the box not even one adjustment needed, it was even intonated perfectly
Also they come with a much better gig bag lol
cool! If I'm ever in a shop that has them, I'll pick it up to check out. it's $1,729.99 CAD plus tax here
Hey Landon, l keep hearing MIJ Tokais are really good & better made than the originals. Any chance of you reviewing one of their Tele or Strat type models?
I've heard they are supposed to really good but I've never seen one in person. I'd like to check one out sometime
Nice !
Do you sell often or do you just collect ?
Myself I always say I'm keeping this one forever...and then something catches my eye and I sell it to buy something new .
I sell a lot and keep the keepers đ
Hi Landon : What store on Reverb did you get it from?
hey there. It's a shop called Kinko Music Co,.Ltd.
They demo the guitar before you get it to show it all works!
this is my guitar czcams.com/video/NQCYj0LQFdk/video.html
Great stuff!! could you share the reverb seller? would they ship to the US?
No problem! Looks like they ship to all of North America. Here's my link reverb.grsm.io/gpuv8wvdgd1p
search for Kinko Music Co., Ltd
Nice guitar! The 4-way is a real bonus - and rolled edges! At not much more than a MiM. It's a bloody bargain I tell ya!
It's pricier than a MIM Player but less than a Player Plus so this might be their best value/quality option
@@landonbailey I feel like they are as good as the American Professional II. Who knows what the pickups are though, but if you don't like the stock PUPs, you can change them and still be under the Made in USA price. I also think Japan made is miles (or kilometers, if you prefer) ahead of anything coming out of the Mexico factory right now for roughly the same amount of coin. (But I haven't touched a Player plus, so I am basing my opinion on incomplete knowledge.) Glad to hear you like it!
cheers!
If it had a 6 saddle bridge I would be ready to grab one.

Is orange drop envy a thing? I may have it. Great vid.

I own 3 MIJ Fenders and they're awesome and stack up *very* well against MIA Fenders. But you're right, the gig bags are a joke. They'll do if you're transporting your guitar in the back seat of a car, but if you're on the subway, forget it.
They don't appear to have cases with any of the Made in Japan series
@@landonbailey Sure they do. They're $150.
I looked up the Sweetwater link, and it just showed me the JV Fifties, series models! I'm one that's stuck on the maple fretboards so that link didn't help me much!
I got mine on Reverb from a Japanese shop called Kinko
How do you feel about this neck vs the player series tele neck? Is the hybrid IIâs feel thicker?
From memory it feels similar to the Player neck size
Would like to try one out myself. Thx

I got one in white . Was a bit disappointed . They did a bad job rolling the edges , look rough and badly finished . Super surprising for MIJ quality ! Sounds great though and really nice weight. I think I will keep ;)
