It all depends on where your ideal defense range is for your house. 15 yards away is quite a distance frankly considering a lot of homes. 5-10max yards seems like a solid range. Birdshot gives me that piece of mind.

As a life-long deer hunter, this round knocks them off their feet, without the worry of pass-throughs. One of these center mass, the bad guy will not be testifying much. To be honest about it, I hope I am never forced to use it for self-defense. Hurting another human being, should be the last thing any of us wants to do. Rudyard Kipling said it best. I've thought about this many times, but your comment also raised this thought in me. This might be a garbage idea, might not be, but why not mix the 3? Load in birdshot first, the next round is buckshot and then comes the slug. The birdshot might be able to get the attacker to back down, and if they do why kill them? If they don't, well the buckshot will get them to, but they can still survive. If they decide that it's still worth it then the slug will definitely get the job done. Now of course this comes from someone who lives in a place where you can't get a gun without 700 different kinds of permits that have to be signed by God himself and even then it's hard to put it to use as you have to have it in a locked box, unloaded and has to have a gunlock on it and the ammunition can't be in the same box as the gun. Carrying it is only legal with blanks, and self defense or not it still counts as murder, so it might be why it's dumb, as it wouldn't necessarily work against people with guns, but it's definitely a not-so-lethal option

Not always right away, butt all those holes go through the important junk you need to stay alive. One drug dealer took a turkey load from a 20 gauge from his girl friend in the hip pretty close. The different sizes of shot of shot ricocheted of the bone and went through lungs, liver, kidneys, intestines, everything had multiple holes. He was talking and walking when we got there. We lived off-grid in the 70's. 30 minutes from the nearest paved road. We defended our property 4 times after midnight from people going down our Dead End Road to our house at the end of the road, opening our gated property and driving down a 1/4 mile drive from the gate with no head lights on. Our dogs would wake us up and since dad was divorced and I at 14 was the oldest child of 4 still living at home would go outside. We got into 3 gun fights with no gsw on our side but 2 with extreme gsw from the bolo rounds. Dad was medically retired at that time. Fortunately the shootings were at a distance. We also used the rounds to chop down trees. So much fun.

I have a variety that I use which range from less lethal to Magnum slugs. Usually, if lethal effect without over penetration is desired, a shot size between #6 and #4 is best. pheasant loads are usually ideal. Part of what I love about shotguns are the ammo choices. You can run anything you need to from blanks, rubber, pepper, light shot, heavy shot, slugs, flares, and just about anything else you could pass through that pipe. They are great for utility use, and light through heavy targets. Shotguns are just very weak and long range shooting. Anything close, a shotgun can do nicely with. Great for home defense ranges.

So I can give you my experience as a police officer (13 years) seeing the effects of shotgun wounds. With buckshot or slugs the results are almost 100% a fatality if the hit is in the upper chest or head. Now with a limb shot (leg or arm), the effect is a good chance of complete amputation or failing that the limb hit is always completely useless for the remainder of the gunfight. Birdshot is totally different, if the birdshot is delivered to the upper chest or head at very close range as in muzzle contact range, the effect is a high chance of fatality. At the same time if you add just a slight distance, say 5 yards or more the wounds have a big chance of becoming non fatal. I have seen a person take 3 rounds of birdshot at a distance of 3 to 7 yards (the person was running from the shooter), and although the person hit had crazy damage (think of flesh peeling away from the bones) the person shot survived the engagement. That’s not to say the individual couldn’t die from blood loss if not treated medically soon after being shot with birdshot, but as a fight stopper birdshot isn’t something someone should rely on to end a threat in my opinion.

Use #4 buckshot, safe for apartment dwellers, less likely to penetrate walls, and more pellets, though the pellets, or shot is smaller, still, a devastating round. you can use mini shells, they have less pellets, but at close range, which most apt distances are, they are just as effective, and if you have a Mossberg 500, or 590 with the Opsal adaptor, you can load more, and be well armed for multiple opponents which would cover most home invasions. Mini shells also carry No#4 buck, so that would become, in my opinion the prime shotgun shell, and it is lighter in recoil, for those recoil sensitive, but they fit quite nicely in the tube of the shot gun with almost double the capacity of full sized 2 1/2 in. shell.

While I prefer #1 buck, it's incredibly hard to find locally and, being honest, I doubt the bad guy will notice the difference or that I will notice the slightly reduced recoil in that moment. So, I have Federal's Tactical 9-pellet 00B with their Flite-Control wad which patterns insanely tightly in my IC S&W 3000 shotgun. That tight pattern means there will almost certainly be some pellets passing through but they should lose speed very quickly and may not make it through my home's exterior.
A friend who lives in an RV park uses (last I checked) #4 buck to further reduce his chances of shooting through the bad guy and endangering others. Of course, with any of these loads, a full miss is going to get your neighbors' attention.

I have a 3 1/2 inch single shot Henry that I use for trap, and I've shot 450 Casual out of it with a sleeve and I'd say the buckshot is comparable to that. Slugs are powerful but, I've only shot 3 inch slugs. I didn't think the recoil was as rough as the 00. What they do comparable to a target is another thing. I would use 00 buck over a slug for the simple fact that it spreads, where as with a slug you have to be more accurate. I'd aim center mass anyway versus a head shot. More target to hit center mass. And no, I don't use a single shot for home defense. I have hollow points in my conceal carry gun for that. It's never out of arms reach even in my home. Yes, I carry in the house. As you said, many people have done this kind of stuff, but the tests have some value, particularly for people new to self-defense.
My only difference of opinion about the way these kinds of tests are often presented is that they focus too much on the extremes. The smaller birdshot, smaller than #7, are not great choices. The larger birdshot would come closer to what someone might use as a realistic home defense option. Finding #1 or #2 birdshot is more difficult, but these pellets are large enough to be more effective. In testing 00 buckshot, I'd avoid the powerful rounds like the Black Aces. Most new people choosing a 12 gauge shotgun for home defense and choosing 00 buckshot should probably choose a low recoil round. These rounds will be less likely to over-penetrate and will have less power in stray rounds going through walls. A test of #4 buckshot would also be helpful for people new to shooting and would be something even more experienced shooters haven't seen as often.

They are almost all gone now but if you talked to any old timer in SE Tn. they'd tell you 00 buck is all they used. Nothing is as devastating at close range. If you did have to go to court 3 shots sounds a lot better than 27 and that's how many projectiles it would put out. I've got .223 and .308 but a 12 gauge is what I use for home defense.

I practice with Remington express extended range bird shot. Kicks harder than buckshot. And it still hits the target hard at 50 yards. At 20 feet it's devastating.

Idk why you would want a round to kick harder? Kick just makes follow up shoots take longer. And with modern ammo even the shorty shells like the 2 inches pack plenty of punch in 00 buck. You don't need crazy fps from buck shot these days. Hey to each his own if what u run in your home gun works for u, it works for you

I feel most homes are not big enough to need a slug. Buck would give you a great result and give you the best chance to stop the bad guy. A miss with a shotgun could give the bad guy enough time to shoot back. You dont want to miss your first shot.

I have watched many of these test videos. I really like this one. Great slow-mo action. We all knew the results beforehand, but so what. Great video! I use 00bk as well for HD. A slug is way overkill. and will go through all the walls, potentially hitting an unintended target, so, they are out. 00bk can as well, but not as far. bird shot say 6 is too light to do enough damage. These days, due to lawsuits, you are better off killing your target. so I agree with you on 00bk. I hope to NEVER have to use it. but, if need be, that is the obvious choice.

I live in the city, use 00 Buck in my shotgun for potential protection at home at night. I'm not only thinking about lethal penetration into the torso but also thinking about what furniture and decorations that are around my house that a home invader might try to hide behind to fight me. I highly doubt that birdshot is going to penetrate reliably through various obstacles in my house AND have enough inertia and energy to put the bad guy out of the fight immediately on impact. I don't have a use for a shotgun load that MAY be lethal after an hour or several minutes because that could mean I have to fight that guy during that time until his body decides to quit in addition to any team mates he might have with him at the time.

I use Mossberg pump. (When you cycle a round, no one ever asks what gauge that is?) I have all sort of loads. I always thought of slugs, with a lot of research I like the #4 Frangible Buck. If I was in combat sure 00 buck, or slugs.
The thing about bird shot is, no one shows the damage at close range. At normal house interior range you might be unloading at

Shotguns are extremely brutal weapons in close combat. If I had to go to an alien planet and could only bring one weapon I think ot would be a shotgun. I think a 12 guage with the correct ammo choice is one of the best life taking tools ever created. You can take anything from a squirrel to an elephant.

Anyone using buckshot, slugs or heavy birdshot in a family filled house with stud walls is a moron and a potential murderer of his own family.
If your internal walls are CHB, brick or wooden logs you will be OK, but how many modern houses and houses in really hot areas are made with solid internal walls?

I use 00 Buck for home defense. Brick walls in my house and neighbor's houses. I have shot a few hogs with 00 and am happy with the performance I've seen. Typically get a pass through with a couple pellets on hogs so be aware of your backdrops in home defense planning.

(Newbie here) Seems to me that the bird shot is probably effective enough. Especially given that in a home you're going to be in much closer quarters. Like another person commented, if those pellets penetrate the eye, they are for sure going to be blinded.

As messed up as our legal system is, merely blinding your attacker for life will be considered maiming them and they may even sue _you_ for damages since they'll claim now they "can't get a job like a good citizen" (lol).
