Looks like the fire started in the Engine compartment. Maybe a Turbo blew up/ came apart and started the fire. Had that happen to me once. Got out, tipped the hood and shot it with my fire extinguisher. Flames were still coming out the top of my exhaust stacks, so I climbed up and emptied the Fire Extinguisher down the exhaust pipe. Saved the Truck and 8,000 gals of fuel. Most of the black smoke is from the tires burning up. Later, the Mechanic tried to blame me for pushing the truck too hard. Told him NOPE. After checking into the Turbo at his shop, he informed me that the Turbo had not been assembled correctly and a bold broke off. So, it ain't on me.

I was climbing a hill when the fire started and had I not taken immediate action to extinguish the fire, eventually 8,000 gals of gas would have been flowing down the hill starting a major brush fire and closing Hym 395 by Ridgecrest Ca for a long time. The Fire Dept eventually did show up. But the fire was out. They asked me why I didn't run over the next hill to get away. I'm sure the Firehouse that night had a big discussion about that.

Since the placard shows 1993 and the type of fuel truck that is, I am going to say that it is most likely home heating oil (off road diesel). The back of the truck has a spot for the hose reel to come out from the passenger side for household deliveries. Not saying it is, but that would be my guess based on the images in the video and my knowledge of this stuff.

You can use water on a fuel fire. My department did it a couple of times. A fire is composed of three elements heat, fuel and oxygen. If you remove one side of the triangle the fire will be extinguished. Just need an ample water supply and some deck or deluge guns to drown it by removing the heat or fuel.
That's 5000 gallons that would've been better served just giving it away to help those hurting. Hope no one gets hurt. Consider visiting the elderly, the lonely, and giving radical help to your struggling neighbors, you never know what tomorrow brings, so let's bare one another's burdens joyfully.
There is MINIMAL need to get anyone evacuated unless they are within 100 feet of the truck. The liquid will burn at a slower rate than the vapor, and the fact they have it 90% contained means it could be out within minutes. They would be best served to let the liquid burn itself out from within the tank and just keep it contained with a fan spray over the top of the truck. No firefighters would be in danger and the truck would then be safely hauled off. It wa more dangerous them washing what was on fire into the drainage hole. Methane gas could have been close enough to ignite.

First of all it's not water, it's foam. Second, the fuel is also going down the sewer drain. So spraying it with the foam should help prevent it from catching fire in the sewer system.

There's a news chopper over it and at least 2 reporters talking, and repeating the same information over and over but none of them thought to speak about the driver. The quality of news has become more amateur as time goes by.

That will be easy to fix. The heat vaporizes the tar, just leaving loose gravel. I saw a much larger tanker burn at the entrance to Cairn Airfield, (Fort Rucker, Alabama) burn in the early '70.Only part of the transmission and the rear bell o the tanker didn't burn. It separated from he burning tank, and rolled away. The Airfield''s firefighters used their entire supply of foam to fight it but that airfield was for Helicopters, not Jets so they quickly ran out. Most of the fuel ran downhill towards Dalevillie in a flaming ditch. They had to identify the driver trough the company, since there was noting left of him. It had been hit by a drunk driver, who ended up in the base hospital with just a broken leg.

This fire is not even close to being out of control, the FIRE FIGHTERS are doing a great job. The FOAM and WATER working nicely on the flames and knocking the fire out before it got into the sewers, HATS OFF TO YOU FIRE PERSONS!!

Great hose technique to project the foam stream from a distance into the curb so it will break up into "fog" and splash on the side of the motor compartment/ cab and a bit on the sides of the front fuel container without drilling a hole through everything with a full stream shot. As usual the babbling newscasters shine once again demonstrating that attending Broadcast School is no substitute for life experience.

Looks like the fire started in the Engine compartment. Maybe a Turbo blew up/ came apart and started the fire. Had that happen to me once. Got out, tipped the hood and shot it with my fire extinguisher. Flames were still coming out the top of my exhaust stacks, so I climbed up and emptied the Fire Extinguisher down the exhaust pipe. Saved the Truck and 8,000 gals of fuel.
Most of the black smoke is from the tires burning up. Later, the Mechanic tried to blame me for pushing the truck too hard. Told him NOPE. After checking into the Turbo at his shop, he informed me that the Turbo had not been assembled correctly and a bold broke off. So, it ain't on me.

I was climbing a hill when the fire started and had I not taken immediate action to extinguish the fire, eventually 8,000 gals of gas would have been flowing down the hill starting a major brush fire and closing Hym 395 by Ridgecrest Ca for a long time. The Fire Dept eventually did show up. But the fire was out. They asked me why I didn't run over the next hill to get away. I'm sure the Firehouse that night had a big discussion about that.

Since the placard shows 1993 and the type of fuel truck that is, I am going to say that it is most likely home heating oil (off road diesel). The back of the truck has a spot for the hose reel to come out from the passenger side for household deliveries. Not saying it is, but that would be my guess based on the images in the video and my knowledge of this stuff.
Fantastic how they never once mentioned what had happened to the driver. Shows where their priorities lie. They just parroted the same things over and over for dramatic effect. Anyone living near there couldn't have missed the smoke and flames. They just wanted to own the story.

You can use water on a fuel fire. My department did it a couple of times. A fire is composed of three elements heat, fuel and oxygen. If you remove one side of the triangle the fire will be extinguished. Just need an ample water supply and some deck or deluge guns to drown it by removing the heat or fuel.

There is MINIMAL need to get anyone evacuated unless they are within 100 feet of the truck. The liquid will burn at a slower rate than the vapor, and the fact they have it 90% contained means it could be out within minutes. They would be best served to let the liquid burn itself out from within the tank and just keep it contained with a fan spray over the top of the truck. No firefighters would be in danger and the truck would then be safely hauled off. It wa more dangerous them washing what was on fire into the drainage hole. Methane gas could have been close enough to ignite.

First of all it's not water, it's foam. Second, the fuel is also going down the sewer drain. So spraying it with the foam should help prevent it from catching fire in the sewer system.
They are not trying to put it out... They want it to burn off .

So, the most important information is not mentioned even once? Did the driver make it out ok? Seems like reporting 101. There's a news chopper over it and at least 2 reporters talking, and repeating the same information over and over but none of them thought to speak about the driver. The quality of news has become more amateur as time goes by.

It's not NORMAL all these fires & explosions every other day. Always coal, gas, oil. Trains, trucks, ships, plants,.... .it's not like nobody notices.

That will be easy to fix. The heat vaporizes the tar, just leaving loose gravel. I saw a much larger tanker burn at the entrance to Cairn Airfield, (Fort Rucker, Alabama) burn in the early '70.Only part of the transmission and the rear bell o the tanker didn't burn. It separated from he burning tank, and rolled away.
The Airfield''s firefighters used their entire supply of foam to fight it but that airfield was for Helicopters, not Jets so they quickly ran out. Most of the fuel ran downhill towards Dalevillie in a flaming ditch.
They had to identify the driver trough the company, since there was noting left of him. It had been hit by a drunk driver, who ended up in the base hospital with just a broken leg.

It is a simple road repair, unless the roadbed is also damaged. They simple sweep away the loosed gravel and repave the damaged area.
The incident in Alabama was repaired within two days, since that road lead to the main gate of the Army Base.

The HAZMAT placard on the rear 1203 means gasoline. The placard on the driver's side is 1993 ACETOPHENONE. Is it both ? Which liquid is it ?
1993 means flammable liquid. Acetophenone is a flammable liquid but 1993 does not necessarily mean acetophenone. 1993 typically is used for fuel oils. Both 1203 and 1993 use the same response protocol. See the 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook.
This fire is not even close to being out of control, the FIRE FIGHTERS are doing a great job. The FOAM and WATER working nicely on the flames and knocking the fire out before it got into the sewers, HATS OFF TO YOU FIRE PERSONS!!
