  • ABOUT HILTON:
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Hilton Carter began his passion for plants in the spring of 2014, while living in New Orleans. With his love for interior design boiling over, he wanted to create a living space that felt more alive and relaxing. This lead him to began bringing in more plants and by 2015, now living back in Baltimore, MD, he would have accumulated more than 60 plants.
His knowledge for how to care for them came from what he gathered from nurseries, things he read online, but mainly from the trial and error he had gone through with those plants in his personal collection. Over the next few years Hilton would bring more than 300 plants into his home and studio, to create what many would call an urban jungle.
Through many years of developing his green thumb and his career as an artist, Hilton Carter continues his creative profession helping to style homes with greenery and share his passion with the community.

My late Korean mother's philosophy to plant care, and to life generally, was "Pay 'attention, take care!" Good advice (that's reflected here). It's not about a schedule or doing things mindlessly, right? If you check the soil, wipe the leaves, and pay attention, (and yes, maybe speak to your plant or play music for it!), you will be rewarded with a happy, vibrant plant. Thank you for the tips, Hilton. Love from DC.

I appreciated hearing about how to have a more personal relationship with your plant...after all they are all living plant beings with different personalities and needs...and the more we can identify them as such the better we can live beautifully and in sync with them. I consider them all my little children, even my almost 20 ft bird of paradise! LOL!

Great question! It's really tricky if the pot has no drain holes because it can be really difficult to know when to water! Is it possible to drill some drain holes in the bottom? You'll probably have to remove the plant to do it safely. They sell special drill bits for ceramic at Lowe's and Home Depot!

This video was super helpful. My White Bird of Paradise I thought was doing amazing u til I watched the video. All of her leaves are torn except one. Which is fine. I think she’s still beautiful. But all of her leaves also sprout really high. After seeing your video and googling images, this is not the case for most White Birds. The sunlight almost reaches the pot so it isn’t that the leaves are growing towards the sun. Any ideas guys?

MAKE space. These plants are worth it. They're a bit temperamental but:
      1. Make sure they have plenty of light.
      2. NEVER overwater or allow them to stand in water for any length of time i.e. a few hours at most.
Just use common sense and my experience with them is to let them almost completely dry out between waterings. Imagine an environment where they THRIVE outside! In and around - you guessed it - southern California and the LA/Santa Barbara area. I had some fantastic pictures I took of flowering specimens(pure WHITE!) outside city hall in Santa Barbara. When they're old enough to develop a STALK(trunk), you know they've been there a long time.

Hello! I have a question, I have a bird of paradise around this same size. It’s in a large plastic nursery pot. The last time I watered it was a month ago. When I stick my moisture meter in, it’s 4/10 and says moist. The top is dry. However, when I stick the meter through the drainage holes at the bottom, it still says wet 9/10. Should I be concerned this may cause root rot? I’m assuming it’s taking longer to drain at the bottom because there’s so much soil in such a big pot

    • @18MelCR
      @18MelCR Před 4 lety +1

Quynh Nguyen Hi! It sounds like some of your soil is compacted so tight that it never dries up. You should try to aerate the soil. Basically add some air “pockets” in the soil. Think about worms and bugs adding air around the roots of plants outdoors. We need to do the same for our indoor plants. I like to use a chopstick and gently stick it in to break up the soil before watering my BOP. Good luck! 🌱

To water or not to water?
    Curling leaves = under watered
Finger test = soil is still moist
😩 it’s in a wall draining pot. I don’t know what to do. Help.

How big should the pot be for a adult bird of paradise, is. 14" diameter pot fine for a white bird of paradise?

Thank you for the great informative video. I just received my bird of paradise, and I also have a monstera. Is it okay to top dress the soil with something like lava rocks? Thank you

Do you give the miracle grow like you give to cactuses and succulents?

I see this bird of paradise so nice with that big long leaves, I have one at home, looks very healthy, and it’s growing, but I can’t understand why the leaves are so small for the steam, I just can’t understand what I’m doing wrong, my apartment is low light, but I place my plant at the balcony cristal door, so all the light is coming in directly, without direct sunlight... if some one can tell me something, I will appreciate that info.
