In this video, I highlight the basic differences between point-by-point and block-style essay structures, and I give examples of both for a compare and contrast essay.
9 years later... And still helping people understand essay formats. I hope you're doing well, and I wish you the best. Hope you're safe, wherever you are.
Hello luishappy45, Great question! No, the order does not matter. You can put similarities first, or you can put differences first. It is your choice. The main thing to think about is having a logical and easy-to-read flow to your essay. Also, it is always a good idea to ask your instructor about what he/she wants to see.
Well I came across this for a quick break down and this video made it so easy to understand. thank you very much for the way you broke this down. 11 years later and still helping learners.
Thank you, this video is simple and clear. I'm working on an English paper, and this was one of the requirements. Completely over-thought this, and stressed myself out over nothing. Thank you.
Hi Ocean Thang. Sorry for my late reply. (I answered you in my head then forgot to answer you on the computer!) I would use block style for thecompare and contrast essay. Introduction. Block 1: career achievement similarities of the two characters. Block 2: differences in personalities and techniques of the two characters. Conclusion. (You can use several paragraphs in each block if you want, or you could write the whole thing in only four paragraphs. It depends on what your teacher wants.)
@zeb120 1. Write your introduction paragraph. Thesis statement: "This paper compares and contrasts the structure and function of toll-like receptors (TLR), nod-like receptors (NLR) and RIG-I-like recpeptors (RLR) of innate immunity." 2. Discuss SIMILARITIES in the structure and function of TLR, NLR and RLR. (one or two paragraphs...) 3. Discuss DIFFERENCES in the structure and function of TLR, NLR and RLR. (one or two paragraphs...) 4. Write a conclusion paragraph. (summarize major points)
Point by point is discussing your subjects together while block by block is making a separate paragraph for EACH main point(one contrast, one compare). say you got 3 main topic like you've presented. A point by point would have 3 paragraphs total while block by block would have 6 paragraphs. This is given from the book "Everyone's an Author by Lunsford
Thank you so much sir. This has been very helpful your explanation was very clear ,straight to the point and easy to understand. Thank you! May God bless your heart.
I need to compare two character for their similarities in career achievement, and differences in personality and techniques, what method should i use to write the compare and contrast essay?
thank you so much for such an amazing instruction. But here is a point that i find unclear: were i to have 2 more sub-points of pathology, how should i arrange the two sub-points? like this: S(sub1)>S(sub2)>D(sub1)>D(sub2) or S(sub1)>D(sub1)>S(sub2)>D(sub2)?
Hi: If you are referring to having someone else write your paper, then my answer is, "I don't know." I have never used such a service, and I don't know anyone working in that industry. You likely already know this, but getting someone else to write your paper is an extremely serious academic offence that, at the very least, would get you a zero mark and, at worst, could get you expelled from college/university. As a university instructor, I have caught numerous students who have used these services and attempted to submit the papers as their own. For a variety of reasons, it is usually pretty easy to tell that they did not write the papers. In any case, I wish you great success in your studies! (My apologies if I did not understand your question properly.)
Hello I need to compare and contrast the issue of povety on an individual. What method would you suggest.Trying to brainstorm some new ideas. Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.
Hello thanks very much, really it's helpul, just I have one question , make diference if you doing first in block style "diferences and the second similirities or either one not make a diferencce, I'm ESL student. thanks again bye.
It's total misery trying to teach this stuff to the low-level students so typical here in Japan. Moreover, I don't really know anyone who writes 5-paragraph essays or uses those 'genres' (c and c, classification, cause effect, etc.) other than students. It is a good formula for the big tests apparently.
This essay writing format is antiquated. These days, it would be much more useful for students to learn multimodal composition using digital resources and some rhetorical strategies. That said, I have sometimes found that students struggle with the basic thinking involved with compare and contrast, cause and effect and how to organize their thoughts. Thank you for your comment! I empathize.
