    The best bang-for-the-buck is the dairy cow isopods. However I think the Deep Orange armadillidium vulgare is very attractive to me. Dairy cows are very fast breeders, they grow to a decent size, and are low-cost. They are an excellent cleanup crew and secondary or even primary food source.

  • @SkwithOv
    @SkwithOv Před 7 měsíci +1

    i LOVE my armadillo officinalis
    i have sicily greys and reds/orange crush, surprisingly the greys are my favorite of the two so far
    (but the reds haven't had babies yet so it could change, the greys had babies immediately, like a few days after i got them, and they're sooooo cute and they don't start out white like the rest do! mine started light grey, and i've heard baby reds start out yellow or light orange!)
    they're one of my top favorites for the ones i own, which i honestly wasn't expecting at all
    cubaris murinas are the ones that got me into isopods a few years ago (originally as a clean up crew for my snails) and now i have about 18 bins of different isopods
    other favorites include venezillo parvus ( i call them seed bead isopods since they conglobate into the size of little 2-4mm seed beads) and armadillidium espanyoli marbelized, which are also small and they have really nice intricate patterns, especially on their little faces! some of mine look almost like they have 2 stars!

    • @SkwithOv
      @SkwithOv Před 7 měsíci +1

      there's a bunch of expensive ones i really, really want, but i don't trust myself quite that much with caring for them yet - they're more like ones i would buy with gift money (like if i get a really generous gift card/check from a family member) right now, but i am hoping to get some eventually
      i LOVE the spiky ones! i have armadillidium scaberrimum and peraccae, both of which are bumpy, and they're pretty cool too... but man some of the ones with spikes are just....incredible
      and i would love some duckies someday
      thankfully isopods don't take up as much space as most other pets and they're so easy to care for! they cost pretty much the cost of the original culture, plus the bin (shoeboxes are like $1-3, i got most of mine on buy one get one half off sales) and substrate, moss, bark, and leaves... then just some extra food every now and then, which makes a bin like $6 to set up, including the bark (i buy 1lb of cork bark bits at a time and that's enough for about 10 bins).. maybe a bit more if you like going all out or get bigger bins, but.... pretty much can't be beat, especially if you have a lot of isopods living in one bin
      other pets like spiders can have a similar setup, but usually you just keep one in the container, where with isopods you can have 100 or more!
      i also got a pound of calcium carbonate that i mix with water and put into little silicone candy molds to dry.....so my isopods get cute little calcium stars and hearts and gummy bears and stuff as a calcium source, that was like $10 and i still have some left after a few years

    The only thing better than isopod content is frog content... Please Clint, more frog content.
