I think Janet Jackson is the most imitated but never duplicated artist in history, Beyonce, Aaliyah, Ciara, Selena Normani, Britney. JLo, and the list goes on. All of these artists have acknowledged verbally in interviews Janet's influence in their careers . Janet has been very gracious to all of them and doesn't feel intimidated because she knows that her Legacy as the blueprint is set in stone and can never be replicated.

_Growing Pains_ is the album that really did it for me. The whole album knocked from start to finish, top to bottom. 12-year-old me was rocking. The same way I feel about Mary is exactly how Luther felt about Dionne, Patti and Aretha (especially Aretha). I might have not gone through the same things that Mary went through, but she definitely helped me to do more with my life instead of just doing nothing. Her music is medicine, therapy and soul food. Not too many artists have _that_ impact. She's not perfect and I'm no idol worshipper but she is definitely one of my favorite artists of all time not to mention one of my favorite actresses right now too lol.
Pink's R&B music was for like 1 year? It was 2000 when her first album came out. Because by 2001 when her second album came out. Pink went Pop/Rock. So I'm not gonna hop on the bandwagon hating on Pink. Pink was new and the record label packaged her as an R&B singer.

For me, Hip Hop RnB was an acquired taste when it first came on the scene. I was strictly old school RnB and Club Music until I heard Mary sing Real Love. I thank Mary for all the female singers that followed her into this genre of music. Although each of the singers you mentioned in this video may have been influenced by Mary or were taught to emulate her by producers, each artist has evolved into their own signature style. She definitely deserves her crown and her flowers for being the Queen of the genre.

Mary was never a vocalist. Her marketing was the opposite of a Whitney. She was known for singing songs over hard hitting hip hop beats, wearing baseball caps and jerseys. Her voice cracked but you could still feel her pain. It's similar to an Adele. She's great at emoting but she's very far from being a vocalist from a technicall standpoint. She might get off key at some moments and she's not really known to do crazy runs/riffs and all sort of vocal acrobatics

Whats crazy is that the majority of these female artist do not have control over their image when they start out in the music industry. When they first get signed, the record label creates their image and tells them “ you have to look, act and be this way to sell records”. Its not until an album or two later when artist renegotiate their contracts is when you see them going in the direction they want to present to their fans

Exactly. And Faith and Mary both being from the east coast, they grew up not far from each other so they have a few similarities but they're not the same. Keyshia being all the way from the other side of the country with a similar style to Mary is something else. Faith is more like the R&B version of the Gospel Great Karen Clark. Those of us who grew up watching this whole thing play out, we remember Faith was a background star, writing a lot of Mary's hits. When Mary and Puff fell out, Faith got her chance to come forward. It was a beef that was perpetuated and never took root, because as much as we loved Mary for innovating this genre, Faith was something new. She wasn't a replica; she was just another girl from around the way who was reppin for the girls. Pink always said she didn't like being an R & B artist, she was more punk. And I am glad she got to be the artist that she wanted to be in the first place. Pink is a real one, but anyway. The girls on the west wanted to get that representation to. But Kecia had come up loving and singing Mary song. I know this because I was one of the cousins who groomed Kecia to sing Mary's notes clearly and true. But Kecia is a westsde around the way girl. Only like Mary because of what Kecia was at the time as a ghetto girl turned R&B artist. But Mary's attitude about it all is truly the reason why even though I love her, I don't like her. How she treated Kecia was not cool. PERIOD, don't care how nobody including Kecia, feels about that. The same can be said for Lil Kim, but everyone was already onboard with hating on her, so Niki was able to take Kim's blueprint and call it her own. Now she too is feeling that same pain that she brought to Lil Kim, and looking for empathy. But the industry is a machine. And we can all see how the machine works. So it's not fair for the old parts to blame a new part for what the industry chooses to do to keep the machine running efficiently and prosper in the ways it has in the past and wants to in the future. That's just my take on it.

I’m a be real honest I grew up on Mary J she filled my heart along with many young ladies, my age. She was that girl back in the day however, I’ve always viewed her as a very salty Capricorn.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 she’s mean and I’ve always dislike the fact that she never put anybody else on. To me, that’s what your supposed to do and to me. Some of these comparisons I personally never understood. I think it was more so the labels instead of the artists. Faith and Mary actually have history together. Faith was a songwriter and wrote on Mary's My Life album. So it's not like Mary didn't know who Faith was cause clearly she did know who she was. Faith also did backgrounds for Mary. So to me in that case there will be some comparisons cause Faith was writing and arranging vocals on Mary album. I think Puff was looking for an artist that can compete with the Toni Braxton, Mariah, and Brandy and Faith was it. Faith had the vocals as well as looks. Her music was like smooth RnB mixed with gospel, jazz, and hip hop. Faith to me was promoted as a vocalist and songwriter while Mary was a overall artist. I think what drew the comparisons even more is when Puff marketed Faith as the first lady of bad boy or Queen of RnB while Mary has the title of Queen of hip hop soul. Keyshia Cole to me was a mix of both Mary and Faith. As for Pink I don't get it.
