I watched Jackie rehearse at home in Detroit with his family all the time it was wonderful and exciting he was a Godfather to me I grew up with all of his family his two daughters and two sons and I love to see him rehearse and perform he was the best he always had a smile on his face he always said thank you very much and he loved his family for real in Detroit it's Mom used to cook us chicken wings and french fries she always had us a Coca-Cola on the side are y'all watching Jackie perform and rehearse you make sure you eat all your food and drink all your Coca-Cola make sure you say Your Grace

But Elvis had paid all his medical bills according to both Jackies son and Elvis' camp. Nobody knew until after they both died I believe but any funds he did have were in large part due to generosity and care of his friend EP

Loved the late, great Jackie Wilson - have most of his records. In fact, the B-side to his first song here [The Who Who Song] is the absolutely lovely 'Since You Showed Me How To Be Happy' which I actually prefer to be honest. It was so tragic how he died and the way he just sort of faded away. He was incredibly talented and with such a wide repertoire. Probably the best tribute anyone ever paid him was from Berry Gordy [who Wilson worked with and recorded his first releases - 'Reet Petite' and 'Lonely Teardrops']. 'He was so good, he could sing anything'. Incidentally, George Kirby [the comedian/impressionist who introduces Wilson] recorded the utterly brilliant 'What Can I do' for Cadet records in1965. Check it out!
I thought, 'Am I seeing things, is that a cigarette between his fingers?' Was a different time in those days, Dean Martin used to perform on stage with a drink and a ciggie, too. Nonetheless, Mr Wilson was hugely talented!
Jackie Wilson was my rock star in the early 60's, I had my first High Boy Shirt Collar back in the day! Also had my first leather jacket back in the day! So I had Jackie, I had Elvis, I was living the dream of my young youth!

The backup band was there for Della Reese , who came on after Jackie on this PBS " Soundstage " special ....this backup band was not soulful enough for Jackie . The appropriate backup band should have been the Motown Funk Brothers....then the performance would have been something else .

Unfortunately, there may never be a "true" biography of Mr. Jackie Wilson because of the mismanagement of his career towards the end of his life. Jackie Wilson's name, image, and personal properties are tightly guarded by his now defuncted record label, Brunswick Records.

This is kind of sad, the band doesn't seem to know what to do, but Jackie is trying. the audience is like stone...they lighten up a little later. Still, this is Jackie's last full performance. And the venue is a real downgrade for him. Still love Jackie.
One correction this was not I repeat not his final full performance he went on to tour with Dick Clark's Rock n Roll revue in Vegas and ending in Cherry Hill NJ Latin Quarter Casino where he collapsed onstage.

Yes! This is so sad to looked at this video of the late JACKIE WILSON performance. The no good band is his manager fault! His manger should make sure he had a good band, they made sure the gangers were there to collected the money! They tried to ruin his spirit! They probably did! Hear Jackie sounds horrible! Im not hating on Jackie Wilsin, I love him and i was there in Jersey wgen he came out onstage and said " My heart is crying, crying!" And fell down due to a stroke, hit his head and went into a coma until his death some 8- 9 years later. When I say Jackie was a hasbeen, I mean it in industry standards, not to us, his diehard fans. I know some of you just want people to write good comments in here and say it was dynamic but by now Jackie was a has-been and this audience was terrible and the band was terrible. This is at the stage of his career that Jackie used to have to piece together musicians to be able to do a gig he didn't travel with them per se he would get to a new town and use some musicians that were there he would get a guitar player from one band a drummer from another band and most of them can the new his songs but they kinda didn't and they would do maybe one rehearsal and I mean basically like 15 minutes to a half-hour rehearsal and go through some of the songs and then they come out and have to do the show. Even the MC that introduced him was fucking horrible he didn't even know what the call Jackie Jackie Wilson wasn't really known for the blues so that should not have been the last thing he said when he introduced them it would have been better off saying mr. Excitement are not adding any of those colorful things at all and just introducing. But what a fucking Pro Jackie Wilson was to remain in character and give a performance that he gave here to a crowd that wasn't giving anything back! If you hadn't seen the audience in this video you would think that he was performing to a crowd that was going completely nuts over him oh, because he carried it that way oh, he gave his on even when the audience didn't give any of themselves.

Look At My Photo here, I was the Manager of the worlds most talented and gifted entertainer, James Brown! But I was friends with the worlds most underrated, exploited, over worked and down right cheated out of 90% of everything he made superstar, Jack LeRoy Wilson, Jr. This man put on a blockbuster of a one man show every time he took the mic! I had the pleasure of traveling with him for three days on a summer in 1967. If you never experienced Beatlemania then you would not understand the way Jackie commanded his audience and kept them spellbound for as long as he was on stage. now I'm not here to drop names but this was my business then I came in contact with many many artists along the way. We were doing a concert at Caesars Palace and I had a chance to run over to the Hilton and meet with Elvis in his dressing room, I did not know him well but I wanted to express my respect and admiration to him on behalf of James Brown . Elvis was the sweetest human being I ever met next to Michael Jackson but I ask him like I ask every entertainer ,who his biggest influence was... "Jackie Wilson" he replied He said "everything you see me do out there I copied from Jackie Wilson the way I roll my eyes the way I lay down on the stage and sing to the ceiling all of these things I copied from my friend Jackie Wilson" I read one time that Jackie took his inspiration from the late Al Jolson! you have to Google Al Jolson he was a vaudeville era blackface crooner. Jackie would call me by my nickname that he gave me "Pal" I do remember that back in those days all of us, either performers musicians or management would take the little black pills called "black betty's" to get the energy to hold on tight and keep running because with James Brown we did as many as 350 contracts a year! This was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Sometimes we would do as many as six shows a day at the Apollo starting with an 11:00 AM matinee and ending at 7 PM. I noticed that Jackie like all of us smoked and took these pills so he could give his audience the explosive show that they paid for. I had to take these pills to be able to stay up for two or three days at a time and travel with Mr. Brown in that small jet. Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Were a couple of artist who depended on speed in order to go out on a stage night after night and kill the people! I believe that a compilation of things cause Jackie is hard to stop number one when you live on the road it is the most unhealthy environment because you eat fast food and you never sleep in your own bed, you are always packing and moving going on an airplane getting off an airplane day after day never getting enough sleep in between. So I combination of smoking and we all smoked back then, speed to ruin your heart, lack of rest and good nutrition all combined to bring on this massive heart attack. Another thing was Jackie was deeply indebted to one of the crookedest lying ass snakes who ever lived his name was Nat Turnapol and he controlled Jackie's money as well as every contract in Jackie's life. he embezzled everything Jackie ever made and even had the audacity to put his sons name as writer, on some of the largest hit records Jackie made. Jackie had no choice but to grind it out night after night after night simply to keep his head above water because he could not understand why instead of having several hundred thousand dollars in the bank he was told that he owed Brunswick records $300,000 in the red! I talked to Jackie's estranged wife Harleen just before he died in the plush nursing home the Elvis paid for after he read an article that Jack he was in a county nursing home for the uninsured and indigent. And when a reporter went there to see Jackie he saw the roaches in Jackie's room! Elvis was a lover of everyone and especially appreciated and humbled himself before Black music. When people say that I always was a racist I wish that they had known what I know and that was he especially loved the African-Americans artistic contributions and one friend got in trouble Elvis was the first one there to make it right. Jackie died totally broke in New Jersey I've been never come out of the coma that he went into because when he collapsed on stage at the Latin Casino supper club no one knew how to do CPR so they just sit there and watch them until the paramedics came and by then his brain suffered oxygen deprivation. Jackie was Levi Stubbs first cousin.
So interesting to hear.Would love to hear more about their craft and how they worked on the road. Did James brown ever practice his dance moves? He performed so much I always wondered how he did it without drugs but that makes sense. His show was next level energy that Jackie's show did not have. They were very different performers but there is a photo of them on stage together but no video footage ... I wish i could see more of Jackie but there is so little live footage of Jackie in concert. I don't understand why but someone did upload the last concert he did before the heart attack. Were you at the show?
I saw James Brown in 1960, I was14 years old. I was a big fan at the time. In 1962, I first saw Jackie live, and Live he was. The most exciting entertainer I had ever seen, and if you go by voice alone, no one can come close. We became very close friends and I saw him perform approximately 150 times over the years. I was with Jackie the night he and Elvis met for the first time in1966 at "The Trip" in Hollywood. James Brown was also in the audience: so were The Rolling Stones, The Animals , and many others celebs. That night, Elvis told Jackie, "There is no reason why you're not the #1 singer in the world today." I was with Jackie August of 1975, in Las Vegas, one month before his "heart attack". Back in 1966, Jackie was performing in LA, he just came off his huge hit, "Whispers", the place was packed. James Brown came down that night. Later, In the dressing room we had a conversation between me, Jackie and James Brown in YI DDISH !!! To me Jackie was the greatest singer/entertainer there ever was and ever could be...a one of kind!

Unfortunately, there may never be a "true" biography of Mr. Jackie Wilson because of the mismanagement of his career towards the end of his life. Jackie Wilson's name, image, and personal properties are tightly guarded by his now defuncted record label, Brunswick Records.

This is kind of sad, the band doesn't seem to know what to do, but Jackie is trying. the audience is like stone...they lighten up a little later. Still, this is Jackie's last full performance. And the venue is a real downgrade for him. Still love Jackie.
One correction this was not I repeat not his final full performance he went on to tour with Dick Clark's Rock n Roll revue in Vegas and ending in Cherry Hill NJ Latin Quarter Casino where he collapsed onstage.

Yes! This is so sad to looked at this video of the late JACKIE WILSON performance. The no good band is his manager fault! His manger should make sure he had a good band, they made sure the gangers were there to collected the money! They tried to ruin his spirit! They probably did! But Jackie Wilson gave the audience a great performance reguardless of a bad band!

Back in those days you only jumped and screams on the “chicken circuit “ otherwise it was proper to show restraint (among white folk).
Hear Jackie sounds horrible! Im not hating on Jackie Wilsin, I love him and i was there in Jersey wgen he came out onstage and said " My heart is crying, crying!" And fell down due to a stroke, hit his head and went into a coma until his death some 8- 9 years later. When I say Jackie was a hasbeen, I mean it in industry standards, not to us, his diehard fans. I know some of you just want people to write good comments in here and say it was dynamic but by now Jackie was a has-been and this audience was terrible and the band was terrible. This is at the stage of his career that Jackie used to have to piece together musicians to be able to do a gig he didn't travel with them per se he would get to a new town and use some musicians that were there he would get a guitar player from one band a drummer from another band and most of them can the new his songs but they kinda didn't and they would do maybe one rehearsal and I mean basically like 15 minutes to a half-hour rehearsal and go through some of the songs and then they come out and have to do the show. Even the MC that introduced him was fucking horrible he didn't even know what the call Jackie Jackie Wilson wasn't really known for the blues so that should not have been the last thing he said when he introduced them it would have been better off saying mr. Excitement are not adding any of those colorful things at all and just introducing. But what a fucking Pro Jackie Wilson was to remain in character and give a performance that he gave here to a crowd that wasn't giving anything back! If you hadn't seen the audience in this video you would think that he was performing to a crowd that was going completely nuts over him oh, because he carried it that way oh, he gave his on even when the audience didn't give any of themselves.

Anytime someone speaks the truth hear about something being bad quality you always get some nut job like you saying that you're hating on the person or that they're jealous I'm a bigger fan of Jackie Wilson than anybody in the world I am a huge jacket Wilson fan I'm just talkin about it the dynamic of how tame age and circumstances slows us all down and effects things and with him some of his life circumstances were devastated and brought him to this. After that woman shot him his voice was never the same it wasn't as good and everybody knows that. Couple that with his alcohol and drug use and the way he was living in his lifestyle and the mental and emotional and spiritual pressures of dealing with the mafia killing his son and record companies being controlled by the mafia taking his money Jackie was under a lot of pressure I am merely talking about how life took its toll on one of the greatest as it does on all of us. I can't do what I did 20 years ago or at least not as good and I bet it is the same with you he was a hell of an Entertainer but here we are not seeing him at his best that is all I'm saying

You tripping. The audience is subdued. The band sucks. Jackie Wilson never gave a has been performance no matter what his current position was on the damn charts. So he was never a has been. When you have a voice and discs plus stage presence like he did how could he? Jackie was a legend by this time and I dont know what was up with that audience. Look At My Photo here, I was the Manager of the worlds most talented and gifted entertainer, James Brown! But I was friends with the worlds most underrated, exploited, over worked and down right cheated out of 90% of everything he made superstar, Jack LeRoy Wilson, Jr. This man put on a blockbuster of a one man show every time he took the mic! I had the pleasure of traveling with him for three days on a summer in 1967. If you never experienced Beatlemania then you would not understand the way Jackie commanded his audience and kept them spellbound for as long as he was on stage. now I'm not here to drop names but this was my business then I came in contact with many many artists along the way. We were doing a concert at Caesars Palace and I had a chance to run over to the Hilton and meet with Elvis in his dressing room, I did not know him well but I wanted to express my respect and admiration to him on behalf of James Brown . Elvis was the sweetest human being I ever met next to Michael Jackson but I ask him like I ask every entertainer ,who his biggest influence was... "Jackie Wilson" he replied He said "everything you see me do out there I copied from Jackie Wilson the way I roll my eyes the way I lay down on the stage and sing to the ceiling all of these things I copied from my friend Jackie Wilson" I read one time that Jackie took his inspiration from the late Al Jolson! you have to Google Al Jolson he was a vaudeville era blackface crooner.
Jackie would call me by my nickname that he gave me "Pal" I do remember that back in those days all of us, either performers musicians or management would take the little black pills called "black betty's" to get the energy to hold on tight and keep running because with James Brown we did as many as 350 contracts a year! This was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Sometimes we would do as many as six shows a day at the Apollo starting with an 11:00 AM matinee and ending at 7 PM. I noticed that Jackie like all of us smoked and took these pills so he could give his audience the explosive show that they paid for. I had to take these pills to be able to stay up for two or three days at a time and travel with Mr. Brown in that small jet. Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Were a couple of artist who depended on speed in order to go out on a stage night after night and kill the people! I believe that a compilation of things cause Jackie is hard to stop number one when you live on the road it is the most unhealthy environment because you eat fast food and you never sleep in your own bed, you are always packing and moving going on an airplane getting off an airplane day after day never getting enough sleep in between. So I combination of smoking and we all smoked back then, speed to ruin your heart, lack of rest and good nutrition all combined to bring on this massive heart attack. Another thing was Jackie was deeply indebted to one of the crookedest lying ass snakes who ever lived his name was Nat Turnapol and he controlled Jackie's money as well as every contract in Jackie's life. he embezzled everything Jackie ever made and even had the audacity to put his sons name as writer, on some of the largest hit records Jackie made. Jackie had no choice but to grind it out night after night after night simply to keep his head above water because he could not understand why instead of having several hundred thousand dollars in the bank he was told that he owed Brunswick records $300,000 in the red! I talked to Jackie's estranged wife Harleen just before he died in the plush nursing home the Elvis paid for after he read an article that Jack he was in a county nursing home for the uninsured and indigent. And when a reporter went there to see Jackie he saw the roaches in Jackie's room! Elvis was a lover of everyone and especially appreciated and humbled himself before Black music. When people say that I always was a racist I wish that they had known what I know and that was he especially loved the African-Americans artistic contributions and one friend got in trouble Elvis was the first one there to make it right. Jackie died totally broke in New Jersey I've been never come out of the coma that he went into because when he collapsed on stage at the Latin Casino supper club no one knew how to do CPR so they just sit there and watch them until the paramedics came and by then his brain suffered oxygen deprivation. Jackie was Levi Stubbs first cousin.

He performed so much I always wondered how he did it without drugs but that makes sense. His show was next level energy that Jackie's show did not have. They were very different performers but there is a photo of them on stage together but no video footage ...

I saw James Brown in 1960, I was14 years old. I was a big fan at the time. In 1962, I first saw Jackie live, and Live he was. The most exciting entertainer I had ever seen, and if you go by voice alone, no one can come close. We became very close friends and I saw him perform approximately 150 times over the years. I was with Jackie the night he and Elvis met for the first time in1966 at "The Trip" in Hollywood. James Brown was also in the audience: so were The Rolling Stones, The Animals , and many others celebs.
That night, Elvis told Jackie, "There is no reason why you're not the #1 singer in the world today."
I was with Jackie August of 1975, in Las Vegas, one month before his "heart attack".
Back in 1966, Jackie was performing in LA, he just came off his huge hit, "Whispers", the place was packed. James Brown came down that night.
Later, In the dressing room we had a conversation between me, Jackie and James Brown in YI DDISH !!!
To me Jackie was the greatest singer/entertainer there ever was and ever could be...a one of kind!
