  • The "model minority myth" that suggests all Asians and Asian Americans are well-off and don't need assistance can actually do more harm than good.

    • @stormbringer2189
      @stormbringer2189 Před 6 lety +24

      It relates to it because the Asian-American community wants to look like it doesn't have a problem and thus less likely to ask for outside assistance due to pressure from the community to keep the status quo.

    the model minority isn't a myth, it's a statistic. It says that ON AVERAGE Asians have the highest household income in the U.S. Of course there's still poverty and racism among Asians, just like this unfortunate woman here, they're not mutually exclusive. I think the right way to look at this is despite whatever discrimination or inequalities Asians experience, we still pulled through and earn higher average incomes than white people, who are considered on average the most "privileged" in the U.S. This goes to show your own actions and accountabilities are just as important as whatever environmental factors you're put into.

    • @kylechen9573
      @kylechen9573 Před 3 lety

      @Hyun Kim that's true, and I never said anyone should experience discrimination, I'm just saying people shouldn't use discrimination as an excuse all the time for their own agency, and to blame everything on society, which many people do. "Be grateful in spite of your suffering." - JP

      @kylechen9573 Před 3 lety

      @Hyun Kim I agree with a lot of what u said, but ur equivocating my words again. I never said be silent. I said be grateful. You can be both grateful and not be silent. Yes Asians should speak up more, but that doesn't mean we should become resentful.

They care more about being educated. SAT score means nothing in the real world. No one would care about your SAT score when applying for a 6 figure job.

So a good SAT score indirectly does give you a 6 figure job than just working hard. • @hnp8184
    @hnp8184 Před 7 lety +30

    THIS IS SOOOOOOO STUPID!!!! As an Asian American, I never understood why people get offended about being labeled as a "model" race. When we all live together, it's naturally human to distinguish yourself from others, so for the rest of country (US) to consider us outstanding citizens, we should be honored and proud. Would you rather people label us as lazy, underachieving, thugs, thieves and hooligans? Image is everything. Understandably, there are many Asians out there who struggle but these stereotypes rarely impact them in a negative way. These stereotypes help more than harm. When we apply for jobs, they consider us smart and hard working. When police pull us over, we don't need to be afraid because we are not labeled as trouble makers. When we talk to people, people respect us. Think about the consequences of complaining about these idiotic things before you open your self-righteous mouth. You're doing more harm than good with these kind of "studies". Also, what are you trying to achieve by letting people know that not all Asians are hardworking and smart????? You'd have to be a special kind of dumb to complain about people calling you smart. "You're smart"......"NO I'M NOT!!!!" see how stupid you sound? This segment doesn't make sense in terms of how the model minority label hurts Asians. It just shows some elderly people not have gas. They didn't connect how the label hurts them directly. If you look at it from a homeless person's perspective, they're doing pretty well for not being able to work. Pooooooorrrr journalism.

    • @amyfalconer1660
      @amyfalconer1660 Před 7 lety +25

      The problem with stereotypes is that they're not merely descriptive (describing how people think Asians are), but also prescriptive (describe how people think Asians ought to be). This actually has really severe consequences for Asian Americans in the workplace-- co-workers get mad that they don't fulfill stereotypes. Please see "Prescriptive Stereotypes and Workplace Consequences for East Asians in
      North America"

      hnp8184 the point of the video is that the Asian model minority fails to accommodate Asians who do not fit the stereotype of being well off and not needing help. look at those ladies living in poor conditions in their apartment are they the model minority? all stereotypes are bad bc it lumps a race together and does not see people as individuals. it might seem that Asian stereotypes are "not that bad" but they are bc it's a form of discrimination none the less.
