- A few months ago I found an amazing CZcams channel with some Lumiere films uploaded with great source quality. It was hard to resist not doing some Machine Learning magic with them, aaaand here is the result of a few months of processing and sound editing.

This is not only absolutely amazing but very sad as well, knowing that all of these individuals are no longer around😢
It's not historically accurate but it does something important. Black and white movies in low filmrate look not natural. We are treating it like painted picture or heroglyps. We can;t identify with persons and situation on it. But after your work it feels like you could move in time and feel like a part of that world, at least for a moment. And that's why I like to see your movies, because of this natural feeling of this world, that doesn't exist anymore.

Love your work with these old films and thank you so much for taking the time to bring them back to life! When one looks at photos from this time period one could be forgiven for thinking people never smiled or showed emotion but, here is proof that they did! I wonder though do you add the audio and sound effects? If so it's amazing because it matches the films so well! Truly amazing work!

@@kevinn3051 Well sort of real people when the faces are redone that is not how that person looked nor necessarily the colors actually worn. Still it is intresting.
They shall Never Grow old. Peter Jackson's restoration of WWI WWI british film is mandatory for all to watch. Here they researched the actual uniforms and things shown so the colors are right. Forensic lip readers got what they saying right. And in one case and officer giving a speech they could not see the face well enough they went into vaults of things saved from the military unit involved and were lucky enough to find the actual speech. They drove the countryside where it was fought to get those colors right. Blew up the right shell size to get the sound mostly right of course actual shells from then the propellant way to old to be safe so there is none to test.
Even more fascinating is they're all in their early 20s.

These people had no idea they'd be viewed over 100 years later on devices they couldn't imagine! It's the closest thing to time travel.
We already can send a particle from one place to another. With the particle arriving at the destination at the same time as it leaving. No time is used from a / b. Now we must figure out how to copy the map of particles that make up each individual human and build machines to read and write it. We will time travel. But not to the past of future. We will travel distance without time. Hopefully :)

It's so amazing to see stuff like this. These are people who lived in a world completely different from the world we live now. People whose names, lives, histories, emotions etc. aren't known for us, but their faces, their smiles, their existences are here, and we can see and imagine how the world was, what was life in those years through those records. I was born in 1970 and used to think everything before I was born was black and white.
The reason I thought this was all the TV from older shows was shown in black and white and the current TV shows were in color.

Time machine here is a term to express the fact that those Clips show history in a very new, unique and personal way
This is so important. The practices of capturing older film are invaluable for history, but it’s just as invaluable to bring that footage to modern day. It humanizes those of the past properly and removes the romanticized perspective in the modern mind.

Its so odd that when we are young we have the sense that the world has only come about in our lifetime, even though we know its otherwise. But still its a sensation that nothing matters, no one had lives, loved, raised kids and had some of the same problems we have. This video can shock you into seeing it now as another dimension, as if all the people are still alive somewhere.
It's also amazing to think of all your ancestors. Their loves stories and how it all led to you being born and having your own life.

It's amazing to think that we are engaging in a relationship right now with anonymous cinematographers from 120 years ago. I've never seen anything like this in my life. The sound truly does make it feel like you're there. Puts things into perspective. I realized that history actually happened. It's always been photos or almost romanticized stories. Those people were no different than us today.

Same, theres some sort of primal aspect of the human condition that these videos put on display so well, it really shows how close we really are to each other, even when we're separated by over 100 years, time is arbitrary.
One of the most disconcerting qualities of vintage filming is how fast and awkward everybody moved. The contemporary processes you invoke in these films creates a tempo of life and color with the sounds of the times. Well Done Mr. Shiryaev!
That fast, choppy people movement look may owe to fewer cinematic frames per second. As a child seeing such old footage, I thought people back then did move that fast, jerky way ... until I realized that my grandmother moved the same way we did.

Originals should definitely be preserved, but these new versions give some insight about how world looked like then. At least they do better than B&W-footage run with incorrect speed making world very fast.

Fantastic! A look into the past and seeing the people in yesteryear is fascinating. Great job with the soundtrack (especially with the dogs.) Thank you for all your work.
Truly amazing. You have to remind yourself that you’re not watching a Hollywood movie and that it’s authentic footage from the day. Thanks the great entertainment and insight to the process.
That's what makes these films so special. The subjects are real folks doing everyday real world things. No scripts for that! We may change our tech, our fashions, and even our ideas on public and private decorum, but human reactions and emotions don't change much. Have a good one :)
Uh no, it doesn't look at all like watching a Hollywood movie since those would be in 4K ultrawide Dolby Atmos surround. This looks nothing like that.

Its ganna be more weird 100 years from now and seeing 4K 60 video of our time. We’ve gotten so used to black & white pictures being the representation of a distant past.
I am 58 years old and have become very nostalgic in my later years, so l would like to say that your work of preservation, restoration and colorisation is amazing. I have often wondered what it would have been like to live in this era, your restored footage makes it more real to me. The footage which you have restored makes it look as though it was filmed yesterday.

Nah, we will get much much closer in a few decades.
@@julius43461 impossible to travel backwards in time. its just not possible (with our current understanding of time, space and maths). someone's yet to come who'd disprove the current system of mathematics, but until then, general relativity disproves the idea of backwards time travel (it does approve speeding and slowing time though)
@@ruutjormun2262 I agree it is most likely impossible, although I am very cautious with such predictions, as universe is weird and there is so much we don't know yet. What I meant with much much closer is authentic experiences created with VR. You could create an environment similar to these videos and immerse yourself there. It's not real, but it's very close.
BTW isn't time an illusion anyway? There is no progression of time at all, so there is no place to travel to. The fact that we age and things change around us is just matter changing into different forms.
they have methods of time travel, time permeates into the past and future from a single point, time has different densities in different directions, they use a tuned in frequency based on that density, and through a pulsed wave they access time, that was put really simply and i dont understand it fully but, it appears be the idea

that said, backwards time travel is at the height of impossibility, since by progression of time we are constantly changing the futures ahead of us. all choices and decisions create new timelines. to go backwards and do something to change a timeline's etched path would, at a literal level be physically impossible, and with a theoretical eye it'd rupture the currently flowing timeline to create billions more *at that point* .
the only way i could see that working is if the path ejects upwards into a parallel space - but then all future events would have to change, while the original timeline would gain a branch, leaving *it* (the first) unperturbed.
essentially it'd be like a loading a game save at an earlier point, to revive a dead ally. it would change the future in a way that cannot be deemed reverse time travel, just a creation of a new future, since the ally would become a new constant that affects the future indefinitely, and the timeline would definitely change from the original flow.
time, as a general concept of 'this amount of *time* has passed' or 'it'll take x (amount of) *time* to get there*', is likely not an illusion, it's heavily linked to spatial mechanics, especially gravity. its use in academics is quite arbitrary though, but youre right that its just a description of a circumstantial prerequisite to a later state.

I think vertical is okay in order to not interfere with the image, but I would leave them up a few seconds longer.
As a genealogy hobbyist, this is one of the most amazing pieces of work I have ever seen! Imagine just how many of these people never had their picture taken during their lifetime. They would essentially be "invisible" forever. But with these video restorations, you can see their faces and their expressions. It brings them to life in a way that even a picture never would. Thank you.
Keep in mind though that this is more than a restoration! It's enhanced by a program, and it will make guesses, so in some cases you are seeing what a neural network thinks is "supposed" to be there(especially in the case of faces at a distance which may have been blurred or scratched in the original source). The overall picture is certainly true enough, but the details can never be more accurate than the source material. Still terrific in many ways of course!
It always gets me. The things the mainland Europeans lived through before then and would hopefully live through after then. The oldest ones might remember the Revolutions of 1848. Or the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune of 1870. Then World War 1 that so many of the young ones would have perished in. And how we see I think images from some of the final days of the Ottoman Empire there with the Hagia Sophia in the distance. Ahhhh I could watch these portals into history and imagine their lives all day. Though we’re so so lucky by comparison to be born when we are, despite 2020. Thank you for making those

I love these types of videos, for a moment you are teleported back in time and get to see people who are long gone but for a moment they still exist... you get to see them out and about in their daily routines. ..People who once laughed and cast their shadow in this same world...sad but beautiful.

Considering that the oldest verified person currently was born in 1903 and the newest of these films was from a year earlier, that would be definitely true, unless there's like some dude who just happened to come from high up a mountain in India or Asia who claims to have lived 150 years old. lol. Stuff like this does make me think about how short life is and how for even the most notable people, there will be parts and facts about their lives that will become obscured.
I then think about us, with an overabundance of video. Will it all from the perspective of a few ventures from now will seem like piles of worthless pieces of paper or just a whole lot of white noise?
Soon you will be a ghost yourself. Unless someone invents a brain transfer device so you can live forever.

The color might not be accurate but its for sure more historically accurate than black and white. Thank you for the work you did on this.
Back then and up to digital photography, film consisted of a grain. There's a kind off grain for each color, and an algorithm more or less can grab color information from certain configurations of grain from each shade of 'gray' which was actually a color at the moment of the taking of the picture.

I dunno man, when I see these old movies I just see too much conformity. All them suits & ties, and hats. Blahhh. It didn't start getting interesting till the sixtees.
In the old days, there were no credit bureaus to vouch for a person's credibility to strangers. One's appearance directly affected, how they were treated, and how much, they were trusted. People made the best effort, that they could to look good.
...There were no "Casual Fridays" in the olden days. If someone looked like a bum, they probably were. If they looked good, there was a possibility, that they were a con artist or otherwise a fraud, but people knew, that if they looked bad, it wasn't just a possibility, that they were bad; it was very, very, likely, that they were.

Funny how we are highly susceptible to believe that the morals and manners of our culture are the correct ones and not some mass delusions as we tend to view other people's cultures where they "dress funny" and "act weird", maybe that's what will be seen as in our near future as well, pretty obvious I'd say.

Thank you Denis, That was most enjoyable. I truly felt like I had time traveled. The Men in the boat at the end , that footage was so vivid I shouted "No Way" in disbelief. Such work you have done/do... Salute you I do! @ 11:17 With that vista shown I am astounded at the sizes of the buildings and the height of the spires of the cathedrals in the background. I have to say though not sure of the location but that for the time period and the population rates that there was the need to do so. I often think that some of them were built as extensions of the land barons and industrialist identity alone. The cost of the stone work for the fancy facades of the buildings were quite high even if one had imported the Masons and Artisans crews to do the work.
It can't be denied, enhancing these films brings them to life, brings history to life! Great stuff!
