Very good stuff 👏 👍
Dave’s been very generous… he was so strong, especially at the end when I’d cracked. Did huge turns on the front and always with a smile on his face. 👍nice one mate, you and Walter made it the best event I’ve ever ridden.
I really enjoyed watching this as it’s something a little different than the usual great reviews.
I do enjoy watching others suffer on the bike, especially us amateurs.
This event looks well organized and supported by the friends, fans and community. Thanks for making us aware of this awesome event.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it, I enjoyed making and sharing it so the lovely comments encourage me to do more content like this
Nice to hear someone thanking others for such an impressive route, well done.
I did it on Sunday, what an amazing event, the scenery was spectacular..nearly made it up Hardnott , last ten yards wind came and that was it ..all went well till last 7 miles and went down a sunken manhole and it spat me off, got it done though in 8h50 .well done great time
Ouch hope you didn't hurt yourself too much David?
congratulations - managed 8:02 -my first time. including walking up the steepest parts of Hardknott and Wrynose. agree with those downhill observations - tiring on the hands/arms. mananged to get onto some fast groups in the first part, but got a bit lonely later on - started at 6:22 after Wrynose was effectively solo all the way back... Amazing support all the way around
I can't imagine doing that ride on a SystemSix! Chapeau to your friend!
Hahaha 'questioning all my life choices'! Loved that bit!
Can imagine the pride. Congrats on the accomplishment. Speaking about going deep.. couple weeks ago i was riding with riders way faster then me. Drafting most of the time then coming up on the 1k 4-5% climb. And i managed to keep the wheel riding it way faster then i ever did. When i knew i was gonna make it i almost cried of pride (and pain) holding the first wheel steady.
I wasnt able to dig into sprints up until now just to recover from it lol.
That is awesome!
Chapeau David!! Fantastic effort. 👍💪
Nice video David and well done on the time! Met you at the finish line and as I said then, surfing your wheel for the last 15 miles or so at that awesome speed through the Langdales and Ambleside was the best experience I've ever had on a bike! Thanks for the tow, sorry my legs couldn't help out! Greg 👍👊
Hey Greg thanks for the amazing words those last few miles were an absolute blast, I was just focused on getting as close to 7 hours and leaving everything on the road. Was definitely running on fumes though. See you next time!
Great video - definitely a very tough day in the saddle. Congratulations of getting up Hardknott - something I didn't manage when I did it a few years ago.
Well done David, certainly a toughie 👍👏
Brilliant David chapeau a great ride and excellent result.. one for my list for next year :)
Glad the video is up. I loved it was my first Fred. Totally agree about hardknott it's not just the climb but the descent aswel. That bit across the A66 is lovely though. Cold Fell was a bit windy though 😂
Cold Fell was a hard slog wasn't it!
@@davidarthur Sure was. Great effort though David with a good time. I've already got the buzz and want to get back on next year 🙈
Hardknott is brutal, I've doen it twice now and managed the full climb without a foot down. Epic ride, everyone should do the Fred. Aldo worth a mention is the Dragon Devil, quite a day in the saddle!
Awesome job and great video. I managed 8.17 and stayed on bike for the climbs:)…..one thing that will stay with me was the support on Hardknott from spectators and fellow cyclists. Massively helped me….sub 8 next year hopefully.
Great video especially as it captures me just ahead of you powering up the final steepest bit. I stopped at the summit and you still had enough breath to talk to the camera. Well done
Good to hear I captured you giving it some beans Richard!
Great comment on inclusivity. I rode at the weekend - albeit a bit slower than you - but I’m nearly sixteen stone and an average cyclist I put 46/30 on the front and 11-40 on the back. Made it in just under ten hours
Congratulations lads, great achievement and time. Good to see it was sunny and dry.
Bringing back all the good memories. Agree descending hardknott is way more dangerous than climbing it due to fatigue. You made it, chapeaux 👍🏻
If I'm tired on a long ride I always slow tight down when descending as my reaction times and perception of distance and speed are out of whack. Same driving long distance.
Very very sensible Glenn I also follow the same approach too
Looks like a fun ride; beautiful scenery, lots of support and so many folks cheering you on! I'm half a world away, so never likely to do this one, but I'm sure I'd enjoy all of it bar the hard-knock pass which does look quite steep indeed. I ride a similar event out here in California (Death Ride), so I'm sucker for these kinds of pain-fests. Congratulations!
Amazing time guys! Was my first Fred after years of not being able to due to other commitments. Put a video up too, great to see it from another perspective. Will you be back? I'll be there again!
great review, awesome event and so happy to complete in 8.5 hours, all the climbs were tough and having done hardnott twice before without stopping, i knew i wasnt going to manage it this time, really enjoyed the descent down from the kirkstone pass and the last 10 miles after blea tarn was a really fast and fun decent to the finish!
Thanks David, great video, inspiring.
Thanks Allan
Good effort, what cracks me is some of the local lads ran the Keswick to barrow the day before. Another big charity event which is about 42 miles through the lakes savage.
That is a bonkers idea!
Great video! I did the Fred for the 5th time this year, left calf cramped up badly on the first, steepest part of Honister Pass, recovered, then was fine for the rest of the ride until Hardknott where I just managed to dismount in time as another bout of cramp started so walked all of the very steep sections & to the summit. After that it was relatively plain sailing back to Grasmere. I've marshalled on two occasions, 2019 & last year so I'll probably marshall next year instead of riding.
Fantastic vlog! It's on my list of things to do one day but I will have to get training properly or I wouldn't last 5 minutes!
Loved this content, now I want to fly to the UK and do this next year.
You 100% should John you'll love it
That's a great photo to have. Lovely form in that moment. I've never ridden anything so hard as hardknott pass. Don't know if such a thing exists in Australia.
I loved it, even though I had to walk parts of Hardknott. What a day out. Next big day for me will be the Dragon Ride. Nice video, thanks for uploading.
Brilliant ride, and great video. I was there too, but it broke me. Cold Fell, Garmin says “climb complete”, but you can see the next half mile is still uphill. This is why I have trust issues 🤣
Love the video. Great to see you at the start too! It was brutal. The hardest part was the downhill(s) off Hardknott and Wrynose, which was a bit of a surprise.
Great stuff 👏
I think most people over 50 and 70kgs would be pushing up some of those hills cripes. Weather looked nice 🌻😊. Best to do these events with the organisation of medical support and maintenance than just going out alone I think. Kudos David for staying on up the Knott on a disc braked bike when many on lighter rim brakes bikes were pushing. So much negativity around disc brakes it's good to see a positive.
I always say weight isn't everything :)
Great effort that at around 7hrs! One to do for sure!
Very impressive...Congrat's
Did this last year as part of Triathlon X. Loved it.
I did the event after the covid delay for the September 2021 edition. Still maintain it's the best event i've ever done on a bike, but we got caught in savage weather from Whinlatter onwards. So Hardknott and Wyrnose climb and descent in the wet was extra spicy! Glad you had a cracking time and would recommend to anyone too!
We were so lucky with the weather, can't imagine how much harder it would have been with rubbish weather
My first one about ten years ago was really cold and wet. Calder Bridge feed station was more like a field hospital.
You should try the Cambrian coast sportive in September. The big dog route goes up some monster climbs including bwlch y goes (13.5% average for 1.6 miles)
Well done Dave great vid on Sundays Fred . I had a great day such a great event crowds were incredible !! I must say I was always keeping something in the tank and my big 36 on the back for Hardknott . There was lots of traffic loads of people pushing I flew over the cattle grid with a guy 5metres in front of me he was now committed on the left hand first steep bit he made it over half then he unclipped . I shout but it was to late I had to un clip . I walked the second steep bit . Then got back on to go over the top . Hardknott I will be back 1 day soon and I will video it !!! 👍🏼
Thanks Chris I too was glad of a 36t sprocket out back, not sure what I would have done without it. Sorry to hear you didn't quite clean it but plenty of reason to go back and conquer it - it was definitely tough with so many people walking and weaving across the road
Great effort 👌 you must have sailed passed me somewhere on route, brilliant day out
Well done David
Bloody hell that looks hard. Chapeau.
Well done David 👍🏻
Great job
I’d love to see you do north west coast of Scotland and see how it compares
It's on the list :)
I must have a go. The struggle is a good one aswell 😃
I like those jawbreaker, David. Cool color.
Doing it this year. So unprepared. Terrified
What would be the ideal bike for this ? What wheels ? Clearly DISC brakes are a must !!!! Bianchi Specialissima ? Mavic 40 SLR wheels ?
You should aim to do this once a week if you want to progress.
Way to go David. Well Done.
Would you ever consider tackling the KOM in Taiwan? Love to see some footage of that.
Keep up the great work
Thanks Kennedy, the KOM is something I'd love to try one day so maybe I'll add it to the list
Amazing ride but I would have definitely choosen rimbrakes for a climb like that!
Supper going David well done 👏👏💪💪 is this on your strava? Too have look ....
Will be there next year! 36t for hardknott! PS one of your mate's seat looks way too high!
I managed to get up only because I copied your Shimano chainring bodge and switched my 36 for a 34 (and got a GS rear to squeeze a 34t on there too). Mentally thanked you at the top of Hardknott!!!
36t FTW!
@@alfaromeo1996hi, sorry to ask but I'm thinking of doing the Fred next year. What is the chainring bodge you mentioned.
@malcolmlightbown9273 Just switching the inner chainring on my 52/36 for a 34t. That and a 34t cassette gives me a 1:1 gear. Anything harder and I’d have been walking up! Great event though, can’t recommend it enough.
@@alfaromeo1996 thanks for replying, that would save a lot of cash not switching both chainrings! Did it work ok for you? I've already bought the 11-34 cassette. I see Dave had SRAM 33 chainring to 36 cassette
Chapeau 👏👏💪
Hi David, I'm local, just curious as to what gears you used. Although I've ridden Hardknott 5/6 time's, I've only cleared it once. I've never done the Fred yet.. I'm genuinely scared of it...... 2013 I was sat in a Marshalls car on the top of Hardknott Pass waiting for a potential course record...... (bit of a long story) when the weather changed...... Badly!....
I've seen first hand what the weather can do to folk.....
You did great with just over 7 hrs, Chapeau! 👍 🚴♂️ 💪
Dear david, i really enjoyed your video, that ride looks amazing! On a funny note do you think we should start a go fund me page to buy your friend some new arm warmers? It looks like he got mauled by a dog on his last ride!!!😂
Great video
Nice and easy on a sunny day like that. Other days are available….
Easy 🤣
@@davidarthur The weather makes a huge difference, but beyond that with the right gearing and feeding it's as hard or as easy (within reason) as you want to make it. Treat it as a race and you can make it very hard. But it is a very nice event and I'd recommend it.
well done👍
Tour de Goat Paths.
Hi David, just noticing all the cycling artwork in your shop. Did you ever do a video about them? Or can you link where you got them?
So David, now that you have done the race, how's it going with your life choices? Great video. ;) Well done on completing the ride.
Golf was looking very appealing at one point during the ride! But been out on the gravel bike today and loving cycling again :)
I have driven along Hardknott and Wrynose Pass and it’s savage even for a car. Well done mate. What gearing did you set up on your bike may I ask?
Awesome stuff …great video…well done David …do you need a 34 cassette for Hardknott ? I’d probably need an ebike
Thanks Richard. I had a 36t sprocket on my cassette!
Ironman distance ??
Wouldn’t fancy it on a tt bike haha
Compact gearing or did you have some kind of gearing secret weapon?
Very compact gearing... filmed a bike check will publish this week
Great vid. Did you mention the total distance and Vms?
Only in the description... I recorded 181km and 3,532m climbing
Now that is a big day of climbing. Awesome work
What helmets are you on? Good ride man!
HJC helmets. Loving the fit and comfort of them so far
And I complain on a 18 to 22 gradient roads 😂. That looked savage. Btw, did you record it all on a gopro?
Yup all on the GoPro. Smallest enough to carry in a pocket and attach to the bike and the quality is really good with the latest models
I think your friend on the cannondale spent too much money for the bike. He cannot even afford a pair of new armwarmers.
Good work, David. Out of interest, what was your smallest gear, and was it enough?
Very small gears Ben I'll happily admit, just working on a bike check video actually for release hopefully tomorrow
@@davidarthur Looking forward to it!
Out of curiosity what were your gear ratios for the event? I'm training for the dragon ride gran fondo and considering changing my 11- 30 cassette for a 11-34
Publishing a bike check and talk about my gearing choices today. But in short I had a 10-36t cassette. I'd seriously consider the 11-34 there's really no reason not to have the lower gears
@@davidarthur I ll be sure to check out the video. Thanks for the reply 👍
i wonder how many less ppl would walk if they were geared properly for the gradient
Several hundred quid investment to get 1:1 ratio gearing though , for one climb …. Is this reasonable
@@logohigh1 less than the admission fee, travel costs, and not worth the hassle at all right? shouldve just stayed home i guess. but yea i guess you have two choices, walk up the hill or get sub compact rings, like 30/46 for a couple hundo.
Absolute black ? , I didn’t realize this was possible actually .
I’d still need yet another cassette myself
@@logohigh1 theres a few of em
@@logohigh1 really you can get a cheap 34 cassette, and use a compact chain ring set. 50/34. the large chain ring should be what you dont have because you never use it unless you like to pedal hard at 40 plus miles an hour which for most of us would be down a mountain. even pro's only average 25-30mph and only some of those pro's use the fastest gears for sprinting. so your set up should at least be compact and therefore the only thing youll need is a cheap 11-34 cassette and a new chain dura ace is 40 bucks. road bikes with 52 or 53 rings is antiquated. and then if 34/34 ratio isnt good enough then the sub compact are an option. on your next group ride no one is going to out gear you if they have a 53 vs your 50.
I'd think an e-bike is called for.....
If people want to walk up a climb then that’s okay. But what puzzles me is why they insist on getting in the way of those choosing to ride up!? So annoying to watch!!! 🤬
There was a marshall asking people to walk on the left but guess when you're that exhausted it can be difficult to think of anything else than just getting up the climb
what happened to the banana peel?
I got mugged by a squirrel 😜
😂😂😂😂😂
