Curing Overheating? Thermostat Testing

  • We're tying to cure chronic overheating of Kayla's 80 series LandCruiser. Let's firstly take a look and test the thermostat.

    I’ve had similar problems had new radiator installed thermostat new but blockage in the radiator and lower hose coolant turned to powder blocking the system up my not be your problem but an idea of my scenario good luck cobba

    Before you tell us, let me guess - the thermatic fan has leaked out the silicone?

      Nope, thermostat! Actually, if it would overheat at speed, where plenty of air is flowing through the radiator, then the thermatic fan is probably not the cause! Good thing I'm not a mechanic...your car would be fcked. :)

      Shit, it wasn't the thermostat! Bugger me! Hanging by my finger nails...(well not really, just interested because I had that happen to an old toyota van - it was the thermatic fan on that, I ended up putting three bolts through the body of the fan on a Sunday in a caravan park with 43oC heat in Eucla at a kind mechanical workshop let me use their drill press (it was a very long time ago).

      my moneys on the clutch fan
      so many people replace pumps, thermostats, radiators and don't even think of checking the fan. The engine will still overheat at highway speeds if you're fans shagged.
      wire it locked with some fencing wire/cable ties and see how it goes haha

      @@sharon69969er Good suggestion to lock it up to test - that was my experience after changing everything...I;ve called them thermatic fan in the comment above, but you are correct - they are viscous clutch fans - the silicon oil can run out and they are toast. As I understand it, the siicon oil becomes more viscous as its temperature rises coupling the fan harder to the engine and so providing increased cooling.

      The ones in the Toyota are a multistage (4 I think) lock up clutch arrangement. It uses centrifugal force to force the silicon oil in the various parts of the hub to provide more or less drive to the fan dependant on the temperature of the air passing over it. Some are even temperature adjustable.
