Lol. I'm old enough to remember when the teen section at the bookstore was mostly Lurlene McDaniel books and Tampra Pierce. They have entire rooms at my library now.
I remember being in high school and the teen section at the main library in my city was like three full bookshelves, and by the time I was 20ish it had expanded into a whole quarter of the top floor.
@alliewithbooks We had both sides of a little wire bookshelf that was as tall as I was at one of my main libraries. But like, a whole aisle at another library north county. It's so much better now.
Love that you did this video! I remember when I was working at B&N and we moved the Teen section (which was adjacent to the Children’s section) over to next to the Adult section. Such a big shift! I think it was due to 2 things: the popularity of series like Twilight and Hunger Games had exploded the category that there were so many new books coming out AND so many adults started reading them. It was a little sad but also exciting, but I agree it created this gap of transition books for that early teen age group, which is getting better now but still is not established. For me I generally still read middle grade/YA even though I am “old” 😅 but I think that’s partly due to it was part of my job. I have some adult books on my shelf like Orquidea Divina that I need to read! Also when I was a teen I jumped right into adult romance instead of horror lol so I still read a lot of that
I feel like adult romance really is that transition genre for so many of us lol I think also as the publishing industry progresses I’ve seen more and more transitionary books being published and I think that’s great! As much as I don’t think there should be an age limit or a set timeline for what books people should read, it’s nice to have so many more options for every type of reader.
I’m in my mid 30s and I love reading YA specially when I’m on a reading slump or just want a quick read I find YA books easier to read. I do read adult books as well and it’s usually what I gravitated towards because they are curated to my age group.
I think it’s great to have the balance of YA and adult books that works for you! In the past few years I’ve settled at around 70% adult and 30% YA. It’s so true that YA books are so much fun to read and perfect for getting out of slumps!

I very much feel read what you want to read. I'm almost 40 years old and am currently reading a Middle Grade book, so...imaging telling adult Harry Potter lovers to stop reading Harry Potter because they're too old. (I don't read it anymore for other reasons, but yeah.)
Though I get what you say about the gap in the market. The "middle grade" book that I've been reading falls in this age group, but the way the US markets the material is Middle Grade, not YA, even though it's considered YA in the UK, where the series was written.
@@literatimedium very interesting!! The US publishing industry is so fickle when it comes to the way they categorize these sort of “on the cusp” books. Sometimes a book with a 13/14 year old will be middle grade, other times it’s YA. Kind of arbitrary.
@@alliewithbooks I couldn't agree more! I feel like this series should be more YA, because it deals with some really heavy themes even though the tone can sometimes come off as Middle Grade. But in the end, I feel the publishing industry should target the age group the book is meant for, and adults can decide whether or not they want to read them with the knowledge that the target audience is younger and the book isn't written FOR them.
