  • We continue our front country campground review series in the Alberta Rockies by exploring the largest campground in Banff National Park & perhaps even all of Canada! The Tunnel Mountain Village Campgrounds have 3 different sections; Village I, Village II & Trailer Court and all serve very different purposes.
The Village I campground offers a more traditional camping experience with mountain views, firepits for cooking, and access to hiking and biking trails. This campground has options to suit many camping preferences and has a limited number of large campsites available.
The Village II campground is perfect for people wanting power without full hook-ups, and/or needing space for larger units. Some sites can accommodate RVs that are 12+ metres (40+ feet). It is close to local attractions, offers three-season camping in 21 oTENTiks and year-round camping for tents and RVs. From the campground, you can enjoy mountain views, a year-round bus service to town and access to hiking and biking trails.
The Trailer Court campground is for trailers and larger units. Some sites can accommodate RVs that are 15+ metres (50+ feet). The sites have full three-way hook-ups and are either single or shared sites. Enjoy mountain views, access to biking and hiking trails and a bus service to town.

We take our kids to tunnel
Mountain regularly during the summers. Easy hour drive from home and access to Banff town and surrounds.

We're coming up to Banff this summer on our RV trip. We have a 39' fifth wheel and plan to reserve trailer court. Do you have suggestions on great sites? Thanks! ~Kelli and Wilson

I would pick the sites furthest north of Trailer Court, they have some trails behind them if you want to walk around. I would also suggest Silverhorn Campground (video coming out next Saturday) for large RV right in the best location on the Icefields Highway. Right at the Icefields you can also camp there with a large RV, as well as Whistlers Campground in Jasper for full hookups.

There is no WiFi anywhere in the campgrounds in Banff or Jasper. You do have cell service since you’re practically in town, so LTE / 5G cellular network should work fine there.

There is no kids playground, right?

I don’t remember seeing any, which is odd being it’s one of the largest campgrounds in Canada. There’s nothing on Parks Canada site either. Maybe in village I between the trailer court, I think I remember seeing an open area but I’m not sure. To be honest kids just have fun playing around the campsites & little wooded areas nearby. There’s Banff Rotary park & Central Park that are great play areas within a 10 mins drive.

I don’t record campgrounds anymore while they’re still open, it’s easier on myself & the public. All my campground videos were recorded a few weeks before or after closing when there’s no snow cover. I still have 4 or 5 recorded yet to edit mixed in with our Winter Cabin Series & David Thompson Country videos. Busy busy for content as you can tell with 400 videos in less than 4 years.
