    You can make it a bit safer by slowly bringing the kite down - touching the wingtip on the beach, let the bar go (control with stopper if needed) then first UNHOOK - hold onto CL to keep the kite in position. Take a step or 2 upwind then pull the upper center line as in the video. If the wind is too strong the kite may bounce so take care when you touch it down. If something does go wrong at least you're unhooked and the kite will flag out and hopefully not drag you around the beach.

    I use a variant of this technique which I think is a little safer. Start by pulling as much depower as you can. Fly the kite to the edge of the window. Slowly fly the kite down to about 15' off the sand. Then pull the top center line while crash landing it and taking a couple steps downwind. The kite will land into the wind on the beach.

    Hi Dimitri.
    My name is Kris and I'm Polish. I'm 41 years old and i am a beginner. I watch your videos on youtube and they give me power to not give up. Keep moving on please. I started kiteboarding one years ago and my progress is very slow. But I will not give up because my dream kiteboarding is from 15 years. I could not get started because I did not have money for it. Now after 15 years realizing my dream. It's hard because I have to overcome the fear of water. And I believe that will succeed despite many adversities.
    Thanks. :)

      Hi Krzysztof. Do not give up. Kiting is a live style and sport that you wont become master in one week. Kiting is not just water sport. Try landkiting, skateboardkiting and also snowkiting . I am very far from any good water kitespot so I do a lot of landkiting. I know, land is not water, but you can do landkiting whole year . I do landkiting almost every weekend or any free time. Always saying to my wife, going for run or joging and she knew that I go kiting behind town :-). So if you heve fear of the water and if you love that wind powered crazy think flying over head, maybe, the landkiting is the option before water.

    Dimitri thanks for all the videos! As you very well say and as other viewers have pointed out, this is a technique for expert kiters and light winds. However there is a variation of this technique that makes it safer. There used to be a video on CZcams showing it, but it has been taken offline. It requires a kite with a single front-line safety (such as the one on the video - is it a Screamer?). What you do, is lay the kite on the beach, on its side at 3 or 9 o'clock, making sure that your safety line is the one on top (exactly as you say in the video). Then once the kite settles, you hold on to your leash with one hand and unhook your bar from your harness holding the chicken loop with the other hand. Then you start walking carefully upwind without disturbing the kite and once you are a few steps upwind you let go of the chicken loop and start pulling your safety line (from your leash) hard with two hands! The chances that the kite will lie down are much better with this technique, and even if it doesn't work, you are still holding the safety line with your leash, so the worst thing that can happen is that your kite will fly upside-down for a while while you are walking towards it holding the line. There is no chance that it will start rolling downwind killing people and pulling you behind it :) Seems difficult when you see it written down, but it's really easy if you see it in a video! If only there was some wind here I could make one :) Και πάλι ευχαριστούμε!

    • @MrBigsTube
      @MrBigsTube Před 6 lety

      Only saw your response after I replied. Unhooking first is the safer way to do it yes! The same technique can be used even with a kite that flags on both front lines (like old Cabrinhas) - just make your way up the center line and pull the upper line.

    I nearly died doing this in on-shore wind very overpowered with 12m .
    1. This should be performed ONLY when you are under-powered (ideally
    NO! on-shore wind !
    2. You should only do that when there are no obstacles or PEOPLE( as shown by Dimitri ;) downwind from you or kite.
    If those 2 rules (at the same time) don't apply and there is no one to help you. Then FLAG THE KITE - use your safety release on the edge of the window (ideally above the water or smooth beach).
    Consequences of: "oh I think I got it are nor worth it, trust me" Things can go wrong really really fast on this one.

    • @epickites
      @epickites  Před 6 lety

      It all depends of the conditions. Usually I use this technique when the wind is not too strong (7 to 20 mph) because it easy and fast. And some times if it is blowing (20 - 30) I will use the wind shadow of a house or tree or dune and land that way. But the safest will be using the help of some one or use an anchor.

    @WibovanNoort Před 5 lety

    As others have mentioned, tricky and dangerous. If the kite does not drop on the ground right away it will drift to the power zone and power up when you let go of the line..
    If you must try this technique, make sure the area straight downwind is clear of obstacles people etc.. and be ready to pull emergency release right away if the kite does not land on the first try.
    Instead, I always use an anchor, kite remains stable at the edge of the window. In stronger winds use max depower. A simple screw in beach umbrella holder works great in sand.

    • @epickites
      @epickites  Před 5 lety

      This is the reason why you have different ways of landing and lunching your kite. In this video for example I use an object as an anchor. www.epickiteskiteboarding.com/videos/how-to/how-self-launch-land-kite-beach/

      Again this is one of the ways of landing your kite. If it's blowing more then 18 knots then you will have to be more aggressive in pulling the lines if you are by yourself or even better ask for someone to help. And if you have no one around then your next thing will be to use an anchor and hook your bar to it and bring the kite down (you can see this method on the "HOW TO" videos I have on the EPICKITES.COM web page or on CZcams. But this is the link in case: www.epickiteskiteboarding.com/videos/how-to/how-self-launch-land-kite-beach/

    • @epickites
      @epickites  Před 4 lety

      You have many ways of landing a kite and pulling the "Safety" is also one of the ways of doing it. But the only problem with pulling the safety on your bar, you will end up having your lines all over place and you will have to spend lots of time in putting your kite back together if you want to relaunch. It is just a mess when you pull the safety. But it is one of the ways also. The only time I will pull the safety release is in case of an emergency.

  • @ActionSportsMaui
    @ActionSportsMaui Před 2 lety

    The first landing was not that safe because there are people inside the WW just downwind, if the kite rolled downwind they could have been hit by the kite. Safety is not just about the technique itself, it is about only attempting to do it in a safe place.

    • @epickites

      Very good Sherlock but the reason I did this video with people around is in case you need to land the kite and there's people around you. So what do you do? Do you wait until all the people leave or do you try to land your kite as soon as possible because there is a storm coming!!!!!

If you want to land your kite that way in 30 knots, then look for a building or a big tree so you can use it as a wind shadow and then use the method I showed you.
