So in one round we are convinced that Liston's corner was putting a blinding irritant on his gloves so that he could win. A couple rounds later we are told that Liston's corner was throwing the match! In the second match Liston fell to a hand punch, as opposed to a punch with Ali's weight behind it, Ali was telling Liston to get up. You don't put your hands out to break your fall when your'e knocked out. I'm not saying Liston wasn't phased, but he wasn't out.
Good point about the 1st fight, the 2nd he said himself he wasn’t hurt, he got up before the ref counted 10 so as far as he was concerned he was ready to keep fighting, Walcotts incompetence caused the problem.
Yes, Papa Torr, it's a strange one, full of contradictions. First Liston's trying to win it by cheating (the supposed chemicals on the glove), then he's supposed to have deliberately thrown in the towel under the orders of the mafia. In the second fight, you're right again: he goes down on all-fours at first, and then on to the canvas, then he rolls over. Guys who've been knocked down don't do either of those things. Liston complains that Ali was standing over him preventing him from getting up, but that's not the case at all. Certainly, Ali didn't go back to his corner, but neither was he preventing Liston getting back on his feet. And the punch in the first place looks innocuous, perhaps just a glancing blow. I'm a huge Ali fan, but I have to admit that both fights seem to have been fixed. But that's not to say that Ali wouldn't have gone on to win any way, in each case. An interesting documentary.

Listening to LaMotta, it must have been so very difficult to fall under the control of the "suits", tank a match, to get a shot at the title. In my opinion, boxers have a special pride inside of them, believing oneself to be the best or at least good enough to fight any opponent fairly. They are the ones taking the punches, going into a boxing ring and risking it all. Then to be informed by the guys who take no punches, "Tonight is not your night kid." The Mafia now have full control of all aspects of boxing, fighters, agents, refs and officials. It's no longer just taking a dive, they have full control of all the top results. Look at some of the decisions in recent years, Canelo was given a thrashing and a boxing lesson by Golovkin in the 1st fight, one judge gave Canelo every round, you couldn't make it up, then he was beaten again by Golovkin on points and once again the decision goes to the Mexican. Canelo also fails 2 drug tests and is allowed to fight within months, when other sportsmen are banned for years. A once great sport is now a laughing stock, I'll never pay another penny to watch any fight, beat them at their own game.

Promotional corruption has been bad for decades, but the worst part is the Judging. Corruption in judging is what really hurts the sport more than anything. It's because real boxing fans generally know what they are watching, and the scores are so bad that they are insulting. You can fudge a few close rounds here or there, and get away with it. That's a matter of nuance and interpretation. When you're giving away rounds that are not close, it's blatantly obvious. Especially when one or the other two judges are not corrupt. It's so bad that, even in a fight where the scores make perfect sense, people who are biased towards a specific fighter will use boxing's corruption as an excuse when their fighter loses.
I reviewed this fight several times, slowing the video up and the Phantom Punch did land on the lower portion of Liston's temple. Anyone who knows boxing that a punch to the temple can put a fighter down. It clearly shows Liston's head being hit by the punch. Weather it was hard enough punch to keep Sonny down on the canvas is questionable. If you also look closely at the fall after Liston got hit, the fall of the punch does look a bit suspicious, therefore my unofficial conclusion is, The phantom punch did connect, but I think sonny took a dive. But he also knew he couldn't beat the crazed lunatic Ali!
Nothing says more to me than Ali's reaction. If he thought he'd connected Well, he would've gone straight to the neutral corner. By not doing so; he's not allowing Joe to start a count. Audience members close enough to ringside reported him shouting at sonny to get up. He was clearly the angriest man in the arena at that point.
Totally fixed Fixed and Corruption ran Rampant and it was much more prevalent back then....Sonny was perhaps the greatest Boxer historically/ ever!! His simply hated for being an ignorant bully...
There’s a tape of one of his fights with Gavillan, Tyson said he saw it in Cuba. I’m sure Jim Jacobs would’ve had Robinson welterweight fight footage since he had so many rare films.
Me too, it's the best performance by Ali period. His fights with Foreman and Frazier are close rivals, but his head and foot movement were ridiculous in the first fight against Liston.. not to mention his overcoming the stuff rubbed into his eyes. Legendary!
I believe Liston was hit by Ali's 'Anchor Punch' but by the same token i do believe Liston could have got up & beat the count & he choose (for whatever reason) not to & threw the second fight.
Nah, he clearly got caught, you could see his head shake quick and violently when hit. Probably scrambled his brains. He didn’t throw that fight, just got caught with a punch eh didn’t see
I’ve looked at that several times. If you slow it down, just as the punch lands, you can see the muscles on Liston’s back ripple. He was hit and hit hard!
I first saw Cassius Clay fight when he was 14 years old fighting in he midwest Golden Gloves.. I was just a little younger . I became a life long fan. My whole family was into boxing . My uncle saw Sugar Ray , and that era group fight and use to go to training sessions at the old Gold’s Gym. My late brother was a pretty decent amateur and was the champ of the second marine division. Boxing is not a cut and dried sport with a 100% conclusion guaranteed. One guy could be the best in the world but a lesser boxer could give him fits. Ken Norton leaning style gave Ali fits . Marciano , Lewis ,and Tyson probably would be beaten by Ali 7-10 times .but as he said himself . You get caught by one good short punch from guys who could hit like that and your looking up at the lights. Ali before the layoff was the best who ever lived . After he was great and had some of his biggest fights but that Ali would have lost to his younger self. Sonny Liston my be a tad overrated as I never thought Floyd Patterson was very good . Talk about a guy set up not to lose. I saw Liston go 12 rounds against a somewhat over the hill Eddie Machen .who was Fighting with a broken hand ,Liston won a close decision. That should have been a clue on what a real boxer could do to him. * Eddie Machen was probably the best heavyweight post Marciano pre Ali , he never got a title shot, Neither did Nino Valdez, or Zorro Folly or any other top 10 guy until Ingmar Johansson . Mm
Interesting topic but too narrowly focused on Robinson/LaMotta and Ali/Liston. I wished they covered a lot more fighters and weight classes to get a sense of how pervasive it was. Still, always entertaining to watch Sugar Ray and Ali. Fix or no, I'm sure that Ali would have beaten Liston every time in a fair fight.
Patrick McAteer aka Pattymack his birthday just passed on St. Patricks day. He grew very poor in Liverpool and came to America to New York were my family was established. he rolled with the union! He is the British Weight Of The British Empire. Out of all 3 weight classes he was the only one to win the title three years in a row. the other 2 golden belts are in a museum.

That's it? It just cuts off at 45:02....SMFH! Anyone got the real uncut version of this? Everywhere I look it's incomplete.
It's so bad that, even in a fight where the scores make perfect sense, people who are biased towards a specific fighter will use boxing's corruption as an excuse when their fighter loses.
boxing is still fixed.
No it isn't, and you're a fool.
@C. Michael Fuck you.
Too bad Clay wasn’t humble like Liston, Paterson and Louis. Humility is the sign of a real man.
Did you know Cassius Marcelius Clay great name by the way was a direct desendant of a great American, Henry Clay.
Who is clay?
I agree with Hank s
Totally fixed Fixed and Corruption ran Rampant and it was much more prevalent back then....Sonny was perhaps the greatest Boxer historically/ ever!! His simply hated for being an ignorant bully...
THINK! If they've got film of Robinson as an amateur, I know they gotta have the 1st 10 years of his pro career!!
There’s a tape of one of his fights with Gavillan, Tyson said he saw it in Cuba. I’m sure Jim Jacobs would’ve had Robinson welterweight fight footage since he had so many rare films.
His early fights weren't filmed.
Liston-Ali (Clay) I. The fight I watch, again & again. Ali at his very best.
+TheMrBennito Clay and his fights were fixed.
Me too, it's the best performance by Ali period. His fights with Foreman and Frazier are close rivals, but his head and foot movement were ridiculous in the first fight against Liston.. not to mention his overcoming the stuff rubbed into his eyes. Legendary!
@@clouddweller1195 So Mike Tyson
Wow Detroit has a great history!!!
Ali says the anchor punch I doubt it but Sonny was acting like he took a haymaker ,It couldn't have been a delayed punch ,Id say Liston threw it .
If Liston threw the fight, then why did he get up BEFORE the referee declared the fight over?
I believe Liston was hit by Ali's 'Anchor Punch' but by the same token i do believe Liston could have got up & beat the count & he choose (for whatever reason) not to & threw the second fight.
Nah, he clearly got caught, you could see his head shake quick and violently when hit. Probably scrambled his brains. He didn’t throw that fight, just got caught with a punch eh didn’t see
I’ve looked at that several times. If you slow it down, just as the punch lands, you can see the muscles on Liston’s back ripple. He was hit and hit hard!
The nation was putting pressure on Sonny Liston in the people around Sonny Liston they won't make this new race politics
* Eddie Machen was probably the best heavyweight post Marciano pre Ali , he never got a title shot,
Neither did Nino Valdez, or Zorro Folly or any other top 10 guy until Ingmar Johansson .
Mm
Jim Norris was the front man for the Mafia. He controled most of the Boxers. Cas fought them .
when sugar ray hooks up w/ the mob guy...hearing them talk...feels like manny w/ bob arum
Sounds like there's a part two to this.
Great boxing documentary alot of lies told
i think liston had medical powder in his glove. It wouldn't be noticed or regulated but it burns and for a while
Interesting topic but too narrowly focused on Robinson/LaMotta and Ali/Liston.
Out of all 3 weight classes he was the only one to win the title three years in a row. the other 2 golden belts are in a museum.
how about foreman's last fight against shannon briggs. soon as hbo went on the air they reported rumors that foreman's going to lose the fight.
FRANKIE CARBO WAS THE FIXER IN NY. HE ALSO WAS THE GUY WHOSE CARBINE BLEW BUGSY'S FACE APART.
never knew carbo was the one assigned to do the work...
'Sugar Ray Robinson' pound for pound, the greatest boxer ever
Facts you know boxing I see!! Good to see somebody knows boxing
Come on man! What about Joe Louis? (Quoting the movie Coming to America, fyi)
10:29 I'm still trying to figure out what Jim Brady has on his head. Can't decide whether it's a Stoat or a Duck-Billed Platypus.
Platypus all day long 🤣
yoooooo is my family history he played at this place all the time
EVERY time I hear the phrase; "Crime Does Not Pay..." I laugh out loud.
Pisses me off, when the "boo" Liston!
All heart.
Boxing is Mafia, for past to present never change.
I dont think Ali would take a fix....No way!!
Gonzo Buddy Ali cared about being a WINNER.His ego was too big to be bought. If you truly knew Ali's life, you would know he didn't care about money,he gave most of it away.🎁💝
@Gonzo Buddy lol
the documentary states that lamotta was on the mob payroll- but so was robinson. there was no escape if you wanted to get big fights. and may not be now either- it hasnt changed...
Fantastic upload, thanks Rus.
Sugar RRobinson best fighter ever
willy pep ! 👍👌
+Daniaal Ali The heels of his feet never touch canvas as he bounces around launching high-velocity long-reach missiles from both directions......Ray Leonard had same style, same look, intentional.... was/is aptly nick-named.
+Chris Gillis That has to be the dumbest boxing comment ever.
+Dennis Moore How so?
Freemason boxers Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey,Max Baer,Sugar Ray Robinson,Sugar Ray Leonard,Jack Johnson and Pacquiao
If Masons didn't fix their fights they would never be famous
They were average fighter but Masons have the power to blackmail like they did to Liston
Someone once asked a mobster which sporting event was the easiest to fix. He said, "Boxing."
Indeed. See much of Ali's career.
@@GOPMAN71 Boxing may be the worst but point shaving and the like are widespread in college basketball and any other game you can bet on. Now even esports is getting in to the act. They just busted a professional videogame point shaving ring in Korea, for crying out loud.
Le meilleur marciano imbattable
Sonny Liston was definitely controlled by the mob for a few fights (both Clay fights).
