Three layers explained below is simple as that you orders a food in a hotel...
Step 1:
You(Client) enters into the hotel for some purpose (Like Entering into an app)
Step 2:
Orders food by calling up the Server where you tells the details of the food with name (Like you give your login creds and press login button - Server carries the details to database)
Step 3:
Now the Server goes into the kitchen(database of hotel) --> order to prepare food(validation procedures) --> then picks up the food once cooked and transfers to your table (sending the response back to the client)

My opinion about instituitions and even in work place rather than making the students understand the concepts of the ecosystem thouroughly, they do it roughly and ask them to do coding on their own with their theoritical knowledge.
