Forging Paps Knife, a Father and Son Project

- 30 years ago I broke the tip on my Dads favorite knife while skinning out a deer. By 17 I had done this a half dozen times, but this time, I broke the thin blade, just wasn't careful. He didn't give me much grief even though it was his favorite knife. 30 years later, having made my own forge and anvil, my son and I decided to make him a knife worthy of him, as thanks for all he has taught me. We made it from a leaf spring, made in the early 70's. It turned out pretty nice I think, hope you guys enjoy seeing the process in getting there. I'd like to congratulate your son. The young man seems to have developed attention to detail and patience. Qualities his father might want to work on. We know when our kids are more mature when we see in them qualities we need to work on. Congratulations on raising what seems to me to be a young man headed in the right direction.

breaking the point off a hunting knife to me means it was improperly tempered and had excessive hardness.
when stressed, it broke rather then bending and returning to true.

You forgot to strike it with a file to test hardness. Good job. Your son did an awesome job on the sheath. How much to cover a motorcycle seat pan I made??
I did test it with a file, just didn't film it. Also tempered in the oven at 400 for an hour and a half, can't remember if I mentioned that or not. I don't know what he would charge haha!

It just seemed to choke itself out. It wasn't a problem adding the forced air to it and it works a LOT faster now.

I haven't talked to anyone in the knifemakers Guild yet. I did talk to Carl who organized the Hammer In and he said the next one is in Mar. Do you make knives as well?

Nice video and knife but does your Son("My Boy") speak? No disrespect, but he comes across as being forced to make the video.
He's very shy. When I asked him if he thought we should make the video for my dad he thought it was a great idea. I had to remind him it was his idea and he at least needed to smile haha!
