Turning a SHED into a Recording Studio

- This video lists the steps involved in our first studio build. We don't need a lot of space to begin recording very quality vocals, and the space we made shows that it can work very well for recording with clients and being a relaxing environment.

I did the exact same thing to my shed . Ended up building 2 rooms inside . One control room and the other a vocal room with a living area as well . Bought the shed for $6,000 and spent an additional $4,000 for all of the materials needed for the project . Great video guys
was the insulation enough to have speakers running in the control room without bleeding into the vocal booth?
@@Shanex yes sir , so for my control room was rock wool insulation with a plywood sheet to cover and drywall on top of that .
Man I work for Tuff Shed and we build these type of sheds. I'm considering making a shed into a studio. You guys have given me the visual to my idea. I'm definitely going to move forward with it now. Thank you!!! Nice studio fellas!!!
I use to work for tuff shed almost 20 years ago....Make me feel old just thinking about it lol. But out of ALL the sheds those would be the best sheds for recording studios due to the foundation. Hope this helps someone. Cheers!!!

Nice job guys! You’re gonna hate that AC unit. Check out the variable speed split units. It heats and cools SILENTLY and won’t take up a window space.

After the foam boards you should’ve used roxul or 703… some area much thicker than 2in that way you make traps without making traps. Replace most of the foam with traps and it’ll sound much better guaranteed. But decent build overall 👌🏾

Hell yea! I am trying to move out of my bedroom in my mom's house by building a bedroom/studio in the garage, it will free up some space for my niece too so she doesn't share a bedroom with her lil bro. Then, hopefully start meeting clients

Neat idea, and 'looks' cool - but a big missed opportunity by not adding actual accoustic treatment/abosorbers to the walls/ceiling before putting up the fabric. FWIW, those foam stickons do mostly nothing for real accoustic room treatment. Hopefully after you guys do some more research you can go back and add some actual fluffy and low density accoustic treatment pannels to the wall and a cloud on the ceailing in the control/mixing room, along with the vocal booth! This will help control early reflections as well as some bass absorption in that space!
Absolutely, acoustic treatment had to be within budget, so it became less of a focus compared to things to make the recording experience more comfortable. Definitely a point we had to compromise on.

Btw, what I'm talking about isn't really that expensive and rather easy to built yourself.
I think the issue comes down to the fact you thought these actually do something when they mostly don't. And that's ok, we all are in the learning process

I like what you did. However, I have to question the choice to use foam squares for acoustic treatment. I’d recommend revisiting something more dense someday to help control low end. I use 703 insulation for panels and double up for 6” bass traps. The difference over foam is dramatic and helps tame the low end that foam cannot. Just a suggestion. Enjoyed the video.

My question is; how are you going to keep the gym tack tiled floor from condensation. If am right; it soaks water underneath overtime because of the air-conditioning... or yours does not?

Great work! Do you have any experience with temperature fluctuations and/or humidity issues? Mostly because of all the synth stuff and electronics. umm.... i m not sure u did the right choice with the booth, i would have use all the space for a better control room and recorded vocals in there also, the control room that u have now is not a good shape for acoustics!
I’m with you on the acoustics, the new wall is suboptimal. Our space is small so the window ac would be too close to any mic without a semi isolated space. I guess it’s easy enough to take the booth out in the future and track vocals in the control room, but for now we have a lot of background noise. So far, it has been the right choice I think

What are equipment are using
Do you guys record vocals and everything into FL or do you guys use Pro Tools to mix?
We have done everything on FL for the first two months, but transitioned to Pro Tools for vocal recording. FL can do everything, but pro tools can be faster for recording if your template is good.
@@vocalvisionstudios Thanks. I was thinking about getting PT but as a artist who sing/raps and plays I like how FL works for arrangements and capturing ideas and trying out multiple concepts. I might still try PT one day tho,
Yes I agree I love FL’s versatility. One thing I love about Pro Tools is how all the audio clip files are stored with the project file. It makes collaboration and transporting files way less confusing. Let me know when u get it I can help you learn

Great attempt guys. This is unfortunately too common to see.
To anyone watching this, stop. Call or hire a legit acoustician to walk you through planning for and selecting the right materials. In most cases, the money spent on such a call is going to be less than the money you waste going DIY your first time.

Acoustic treatment is obviously very important. For our use case, we needed to save money to be able to furnish and market our space. This is a good warning though. For us, we’re recording vocals, getting a rough mix on the monitors, then refining on the mx50’s, then a car. Ultimately for cost, It’s not acoustically treated. It has worked for what we need it to do, you know?

The Space in the Booth is big but the Foam only eats mids an highs. You should Work with Diffusion an broadband Absorber. From the Shorts i allways Hear the lows,Low mids are pronounced alot. For early Reflexions the Foam is good but to much Off it isnt good for vocals

@@vocalvisionstudios basotect from BASF is very good for vocal Range. Its Not the cheapesst but can get down to 125hz broadband absorbation.
For basstraps mineral wool is better Cuz basstraps has to be thick. Maybe Look Up Ethan Winer Channel on CZcams. He is Well respected for His knowledge in Case of acoustik Elements

I love the effort, and it looks nice and comfortable, but I would not claim this to be a "professional" studio for mixing and mastering, that's an insult to actual professional studios. It's a great place to get started and learn, all that is needed for that is a dedicated space and some speakers, and honestly learning to work around acoustic problems will teach you a lot as an audio engineer. Switch between speakers and headphones often to find and learn the acoustic problems. You should be able to capture decent sessions, but I would send them off for mixing, and definitely for mastering to get commercially viable quality.
Here are some problems: Foam board has basically 0 soundproofing or dampening qualities for anything but the highest of highs, and that "acoustic" foam directly on a hard surface won't do anything to dampen any low end whatsoever, it may kill some flutter of high mids and highs, and the lowest sub freqs will probably just go right through the walls and cracks at least (hopefully you don't have any neighbors to bother), but a ton of the low end and low mids will move in and live there rent free and take a shit on all your mixes and make it impossible to know what's actually happening in the mix, and an orgy of frequencies will be bleeding into every microphone compounding the mixing problems and causing things to loose clarity, so you'll turn those frequencies down, and everything sounds small and weak instead. I'll take a guess that mixes tend to sound very different when you go listen on other systems like in your car, that is why. You can probably get decent results recording and mixing vocals and acoustic guitars and such, and of course midi instruments and headphones will be your best friends, but acoustic drums, amps, and anything with a lot of low end will be tough to capture well, and accurate monitoring for professional full frequency mixing and mastering is definitely impossible unless you add bass traps and much thicker absorption. Maybe add another layer of rock wool on top of a couple of layers of dry wall (with an inch of air gap to the foam), and a cloud (minimum 12 inch thickness), at least around the mixing position, and a free standing panel behind it, that would go a long way. Or just admit to yourself that this is a nice space to hang with your homies and capture art, but you have some way to go before you should claim this to be a professional mixing and mastering studio. Sorry about the negativity. I started a long tong time ago in a similar way and I hope this helps.
Valid points thanks for the advice. You might’ve misheard what we’re calling the project: it’s a “professional” recording studio, definitely not a professional mixing and mastering studio. We are focused on vocals, that’s why we’re VVS. In practice, our semipermanent booth does well for what we’re doing. I’m excited to expand into a place that can be used for professional mixing and mastering, can I consult you about acoustic treatment for that in the future?

this is more studio than what most call a studio given that you have a vocal booth, but so many folk say they have a studio and its just a laptop and 3 peripheral studio items perched on their gaming desk. a studio is somewhere that can offer live drum tracking, has more inputs than just one or two, big enough that a band can do a recording off the floor, and that its a single use, dedicated space. if you cant track guitars because your missus is in bed then its not a studio
Young thug records in a room with 20 dudes talking and smoking and they dont stop while hes rapping so if you dont always use the vocal booth thats ok 👍
PLEASE tell me you're putting an ac system in there. It would be 140 degrees in there if not. Like literally....an ac system is AT LEAST $5000. A window unit WILL NOT cut it in a studio. Talking from experience guys.

If you were a Jesus lover, you would do what He said instead of doing what you think is right. Don't spread a false gospel to people and think you are saving them. The GOOD NEWS is that they can be saved by FAITH ALONE. Don't touch James 2 with me unless you're willing to explain how sacrificing your child is a work of the law or lying for spies is a work of the law... those were acts of faith, not the kind of works that the self-righteous thinks saves them (charity, etc... but you have not LOVE, and love is obedience and God classifies obedience as NOT TO THE LAW but as BELIEVING IN JESUS. Read your Bible by yourself, ditch your false teachers who lse god is their belly. The work of God is to believe on Him whom He sent... the new commandment is to BELIEVE on the Son and to love the brethren. For we are the righteousness of God in CHRIST. If you are not a believer in Jesus, but instead, you trust in your own repenting of sins and your own law following as proof of your salvation, you are not saved. You need to REPENT, change your mind, trust in God instead of in your dead works, believe in Jesus' FINISHED WORK on the cross. Know that He is resurrected, you will be justified. " And Paul continues to warn, demanding an answer to the question of whether they were saved by hearing the preaching of faith, or by the works of the law?
If you finally get saved from this, or you already were and you unwittingly FORGOT YOUR FIRST LOVE, repent from that which you are fallen... which is from grace. in vain they made a room for vocals in such a small size, low frequencies will be a problem, the sound is like in a shoe box. No expensive microphone will help
