  • The Dragons of Kara-Tur, with Faerun being the western side of the continent, Kara-Tur is the far east. The Lung are a group of dragons that are part of the Celestial Court and have a very elemental role in the governance of the natural cycles of rain, storm, thunder and flood, they dwell in the earth, the sky, the rivers, lakes and the sea.

    The pīnyīn is "lóng." Second tone. It's also pronounced with a slightly long o. It's not lung.

      @@sunsin1592 That's not his problem. It's a problem with the sourcebook "Oriental Adventures". The people who wrote it weren't trying too hard make already existing material match Asian mythologies/fantasy.
      I get the feeling the target market was non-Asians who were interested in having an oriental campaign. Consider that they tended to favour non-Chinese and non-Japanese romanization like wade-giles and hepburn for Chinese and Japanese-sounding words respectively rather than Chinese favoured ones like hanyu pinyin (which you mentioned. Also, I believe Asians who are familiar with D&D don't have many problems adjusting core stuff to oriental campaigns. I doubt anyone would have trouble just taking the core dragons, like Gold Dragon, and adjusting it to be more Chinese (not that much work would be needed there).
      While I don't like the lung (mainly because of lack of 3.5 update, and it's woefully underpowered like a lot of 3.0 monsters), I still like that book. It still offers some extra splat, decent feats, and has some creatures like the Kirin that I don't think an adjusted/modified unicorn would do enough justice. AJ Pickett has a great video about kirin too.

    I honestly always thought there was a bit of redundancy with the lungs.
    A lot of the main true dragons could easily have been retrofitted or modified slightly for an oriental campaign. The gold dragon was directly inspired by Chinese dragons (look at the 2nd Ed wingless version), and the myth of the Yellow Emperor's (huangdi) triumph over the Red Emperor (yandi) was the start of China proper. They can literally just be represented by red and gold dragons. lol

    AJ! You are among my favorite youtubers! Your work is second to none, when it comes to D&D! I love this video! It takes me back to my days of playing 1st edition D&D with my dad when I was a kid. He was in the Military, and he and his friends would play D&D to pass the time. He still has all of his 1st edition books, along with the used ones I found in book/comic/game stores, I added Oriental Adventures, along with several of its modules, to "our" collection. Oriental Adventures, and 2nd edition Ravenloft, are my favorite campaign settings. Combining the two also makes for good times. Alas, I moved far from home with my fiance, years and years ago. But World of Warcraft fills the void a bit. :)

    Another interesting vid. I loved trying to figure out how you could explain how a Oriental or Lung dragon could fly even though they did not have wings without falling back on magic. Even went so far as to make a a dragonic sub-race related to the Lung dragons that was kinda like the Imugi of Korean mythology, and create a adventure in which the group was tasked by a scholar to find an bring them samples of these creatures to study. Thru the adventures the group came up with the idea that the creature had two long air-bladder like sacs that ran along either side of the serpentine body they had, and that these were attached to a pair of organs that could produce a lighter than air gas that could allow them to float, but then that they could also expel this gas from different horn-like nozzles that covered its body to maneuver themselves thru the air in different directions.

    I was re-watching Matt Colville's Volo's guide review and he states that he finds the monster lore useless. Of course that's his view, nothing wrong with that. But I always saw monster lore from Wizards of the Coast to be a good helping of inspiration regarding narrative rather than just flat out telling you where and how this monster comes to be.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  Před 6 lety +3

      Matt Colville is more a D&D historian from the perspective of someone who has just played the game since the very early days, he also has an excellent grasp of narrative and plot, so for him, the published lore is not much use, when he can just make it up on the fly.

    00:30 There is so an "Egypt" (Mulhorand and Calimshan) in the Forgotten Realms! I remember reading about in in V 3.0! They just combined the place into the same region as the Faerun equivalent of Mesopotamia! I know this because the two civilzations butted heads over territory and it was the place where the deity Gilgeam (Gilgamesh) died! They also worshiped the Egyptian God Ptah.
    00:30 No, Kara-Tur and their dragons pre-date Legend of the Five Rings. I think the confusion comes from the fact that in 3.0 Oriental Adventures, they used the Legend of The Five Rings setting instead of the Kara-Tur setting (because WoTC had just bought the card game for Legend of The Five Rings from which the new setting came from and wanted to give it a bump/push) which was used in previous editions.

    In my personal campaign setting, Lungs are not pure dragons. I like them, especially the carp, but there not quite dragony enough for me.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  Před 6 lety +2

      Yeah, there was a lot more diversity in dragon kind back when they dominated the whole world, so, much as there is often significant variation in the humanoids, there were draconic life forms that were quite outlandish.. take the dragon turtle for instance, that is weird, then we have wyverns, drakes, dragonborn, kobolds, spellscales..

    wow, you showed a Lagiacrus from monster hunter in here. I think it would be a fun game to have the setting in one of the locations from the series, might have to suggest that to my dm friend. as half my group plays. Do you have a process for finding art for these videos or does it just happen?

    • @zionthedragon8866
      @zionthedragon8866 Před 5 lety +1

      In real life, they didn't have a creature close to them other than dragon, so they were named dragon and the word lóng became synamous with dragon, thus the idea of Chinese having the name "dragon".

    • @zionthedragon8866
      @zionthedragon8866 Před 4 lety

      @@Borkeen2024 well, as far as my knowledge goes, they WERE (Past tense) true dragons, and are listed as true dragons, BUT in original/older material, no they were not. Also, they are also listed as spirits, aka NOT living creatures in the D&D universe, so take the true-ness with BAGS of salt. And they gained more types of powers and abilities as they aged, but intelligence & powers DIDN'T increase. And they changed species, this is all in 2e. In 1e they were not.
