I was once told by an American - who had never seen another country, I might add, that it was a "well known fact" that the US was the best country on earth. He was trying to convince me that I would be better off there, with no health coverage, and the lowest wages in the western world. I had responded that I was very happy here and that Australia is a nice country, hence his "well known fact" statement. I had been to the US - mostly New York City, but also to Long Island, where he lived. Although I was impressed with the famous places, the streets were filthy, you couldn't use a public toilet anywhere, and there were beggars and desperately unwell homeless people everywhere. I was also surrounded by well-meaning Americans telling me what they knew about my country and arguing with me if I explained the reality. I wanted to kiss the tarmac when we landed at Brisbane airport. LOL

I've been lucky enough to visit pommyland many times, a wonderful country. If people are accepting of differences like you two are then the new country that one chooses to live in can be "your home". It can be very difficult to adjust to a new environment but we've all done it for our family. With reference to the dolphins, you said the kids were at "nippers" without explaining what "nippers" is, how Aussie are you two. Take care and stay safe.

Honestly, I'm always surprised by how much migrants to Australia love our beaches. I grew up here so to me, it's normal and I'm not much of a beach person. And in regards to volunteering, Australians volunteer more than any other nation. I lived in the UK for a few years and loved it (Greggs!!) really missed the cafe/bistro/food culture Australia has. And it's so common to stay in shape and exercise here. In the UK, after work you'd go for a pint. In Australia, you play a team sport or go to the beach. I always laugh when non-Aussies move here and are amazed we have council provided BBQ's. It's normal to us :)
