  • Thanks to my friends at 29029, I go to experience a really cool event called 29029 which is the height of Mount Everest. The brainchild of entrepreneur/author/speaker Jesse Itzler and friends, this bi-annual event gathers 250 folks from all over the world to complete uphill laps in Utah and Vermont until they finish the equivalent height of Everest (or "Everesting" as it's also referred to as).
    Joined by friends Rich Roll, Chris Hauth and others, it was a truly singular experience - one I hope to repeat again one day soon. Thanks again to Jesse, Marc, Colin, Rob and all the amazing people at 29029!

    Awesome to find a Billy Yang film on Everesting. I'm chronicling my attempt at a Double Everesting run in summer 2023. It's so fun to see others tackling the big things.

    Doers keep doing. Great quote. I'll say that one of the things that I love is that while often external impetus or organization provides us with a why, the great thing about these types of challenges and adventures is you can create them on your own and get it done. A bit harder, but still lots of opportunity to do this no matter where you are.

    Hey Billy, another superb video. In November, I participated in a challenge which involved running two miles daily. I eventually came to love the experience of running. After the challenge, I started running farther. Then I signed up for a marathon. In the lead up to that, I found your channel and watched all of your fantastic work and got further inspired. Just last week, I completed my first 50k trail run. And already looking forward to the next adventure...
    Thank you sir.

I make a good living in medicine but MAN, I REALLY enjoy distance running! Your first video featuring your first ultra, REALLY moved me😢😰😃🏔🏃🏻‍♂️😧! It'd be interesting to hear who you feel this event is aimed at Billy and how it fits into the broader ultra/endurance community?
    Over $4000 for what is essentially a 30 mile hike up a hill with ski-lifts down (plus a bit of "glamping") is an eye-watering sum. It's not a great exaggeration to say you could go on a mountaineering expedition up a real big mountain (Denali perhaps) for not a huge amount more money.
    I ask because this seems the antithesis of much that appeals to me about the ultra scene generally. No real sense of self-sufficiency, a bit of a built-in cheat (the cable car down), and in my mind hard to value the community "support" when you're a $4000 paying client rather than a standard participant in an event mainly staffed by volunteers. Strikes me as a corporate events selling the idea of ultra events rather than the real thing.

    • @BillyYang
      @BillyYang  Před 4 lety +18

      I didn't do this to see how it "fit" into the ultra space. It was a different kind of experience, one I was invited to, and one that I wanted to share. Plain and simple. Clearly it's price prohibitive for a lot of people but I'm also a free market guy. If there is an audience for these kinds of events, I say more power to them (and they do sell out). Ultra marathons aren't for everybody but a high end event like this might make it more palatable for those with means but also want to suffer and challenge themselves physically/mentally.

    • @doubleplay4
      @doubleplay4 Před 4 lety +2

      @@BillyYang you do good work, no doubt and I'm a subscriber. However these kind of events are so out of your norm and probably offensive to your main audience because they are fake.

    • @tkbuz
      @tkbuz Před 4 lety +1

      Everybody has to earn a living, if they can get 250 people to fork over $4200 for a weekend more power to them. I too was shocked to see the cost of this event (think Fyre Festival!) but i’ll pass and vote with my dollars on other ultra events. The rest will take care of itself.

    • @Drewb18c1
      @Drewb18c1 Před 4 lety +3

      @@doubleplay4 offensive? Fake? I'm with Billy here. There's nothing wrong with experimentation and a diversity in event types.
      Besides if you're one to think there's something inherently evil in people having money, then one could see these as a magnet to reduce the number of people with money in lower-cost events.
      RDs experimenting with this kind of event and proving its viability could inspire another RD to try and create one that's similar but lower cost. Shaming experimentation gets in the way of innovation.

    • @doubleplay4
      @doubleplay4 Před 4 lety +2

      @@Drewb18c1 this is not experimentation this is an event to take peoples money and make them feel good about themselves. I can easily afford to pay and enter this type of events but I refuse to do so on the basis of principle. More power to organizers it's a free World but I'm also free to express my opinion.

  • @jeppelund4239
    @jeppelund4239 Před 4 lety

    We also have an Everesting event in Denmark, who would have thought! Hard to imagine in a country that is almost flat as a pancake, no peeks over 600 feet. The concept is a bit different. To get in you have to collect money for Doctors without Borders. If you collect the equivalent of 150 US Dollars you're in. You have to do the uphills as well as the downhills within the time limit of 30 hours. It's a looped course where you have to do 32 loops and around 80 miles. If this sounds too hard you can do the Mount Blanc or Galhøpiggen (the highest point in Norway) in stead.

    I'm afraid I find all the discourse about the idea that your success only depends in your ability to commit with your goals very unfair (not so say insulting). I love the idea of pushing oneself further but I always keep in mind that literally there are millions of people who work incredibly hard all their lives and are never able to reach their goals for reasons that definitely they can't control.
