  • Dateline NBC report on the real Soup Nazi from 1995. I happened to be standing in line the day NBC shot the video outside the place. I'm at about 1:53 - the blonde in the sunglasses & brown leather jacket w/yellow purse. I hadn't seen this since it originally aired, so I was glad to see it again, on VIMEO. Thanks to the original poster, Jonathan Moser.

    I wasn't surprised when Soup Nazi got the attention of the Seinfeld writers...I was a frequent patron in the eighties and had admiration for the guy, after all he was serving a delicious product at a reasonable price while not letting NY'ers get away with expected entitlement. The comedy element apparent.

      While older women are often portrayed as potential chaos/villainy.
      From my personal experience though, older women are usually sweet and empathetic, while younger women are shallow and infantile.
      Exceptions are if said younger women are nerds or tomboys.

    I had this man's soup and while it was very good, I would not say the best. I can't blame the man for wanting no dilly-dallying in his line as it is so long. he is a reasonable man.

    When I was 13 I went to the real soup nazi in New York. He asked me "Can I help you?" I said "One large potato and corn" and gave him the money. He rang me up and gave me my soup, and it came with bread and fruit. It was a pretty run of the mill experience. He was a normal guy.

Portland opens late, closes early, and gets away with mediocre sales and service all day long. Old saying when you're asked where your off to.     To be fair he does make excellent soup, and since he doesn't work there anymore the staff are not as harsh with customers. Not quite the original experience but still excellent soup.

    I miss curt service from when I lived in NY. I live in the south now and people tell their life story to cashiers and after the receipt is in the bag they continue talking till their story is done, no regard for the people in line behind them.

    there used to be a fish spot in harlem where they were assholes as well, it was a tiny shop, line out the door and down the block. you coulnt take your time to look at the menu and the guys were really rude if you asked questions... Best fish sandwich you ever had. well worth the sometimes 40 minute wait! they have a restaurant now but I think the matriarch passed away.... just not the same. I think she used sassafras, but thats just my tastebuds trying to figure the recipe. damn the 90s!!!

    That's the thing. People back in NYC, Phila etc., will keep coming back as long as you get good food. Out here in AZ, people get all butt hurt because they werent treated right. Out here people go nuts over food that you can pretty much make at home. As long as they have there ass kissed and the place looks nice, I guess it doesn't really matter. Cant wait to get out of here. God bless this man!

      +Nicksolo85 What's funny is...a few years after the episode aired, Jerry Seinfeld and some of the cast and crew of the show went there to eat. Al (the Real Soup Nazi) yelled at Seinfeld, claiming the episode ruined his life and/or image. Seinfeld gave him a sarcastic apology, and Al responded with "NO SOUP FOR YOU!" throwing Jerry and the others out of his restaurant/store.

      +TAFARockWarrior97 John O'Hurley (who played Peterman on Seinfeld) said once that he attempted to get soup, and Al refused to serve him because he's associated with Seinfeld. O'Hurley pointed out that this didn't make sense as O'Hurley didn't appear in the Soup Nazi episode, and the only way he could have known he was on the show was if he WATCHES Seinfeld.

    FYI. There was an owner of a Chinese restaurant in SF, that was loud and rude. But it was his way. You don’t gettositalone, he’ll put you with other people, and change your order.
    He’d try and try to embrace me, nah, he even made me stand up and order across the tiny dining room. It was upstairs, and you’d have to walk through the kitchen.
    He made me cry 1 time, I was pregnant and said I could only eat 🍲 soup. I still walk past it, but he’s passed away, sad.

    I could not believe their's an actually real life soup Nazi. I did not know that the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld was real. Wow and his brother has a muffin business. His brother is so like nice and a Gentlemen. He is kinda like rude the Soup Nazi.
    I guess I kinda could understand the Soup Nazi he's just trying to run his business professionally. Is it really true that his soups are really that good. That you are willing enough to wait in a long line and put up with his attitude. Wow I guess his soups are really that good.

    Amazing hilarious entertaining. Seinfeld was a legend. The show always makes me laugh and after all these years it still makes me crack. The Soup Nazi should have been grateful not mad. Without Seinfeld we will never have heard about him.

    Back in the seventys a deli on east Grand Ave. In Chicago called "Jerry's" treated people the Same.
    The menu was in the window.
