  • Carl Andre: Sculpture as Place, 1958--2010 at Dia Beacon is the first retrospective to consider the full spectrum of Carl Andre's art. The exhibition is grouped into three parts: sculpture, poetry, and Carl Andre's unclassifiable productions, from the enigmatic assemblages known as Dada Forgeries to his wide-ranging ephemera. In this video, Yasmil Raymond (Curator, Dia Art Foundation) provides us with an introduction to the exhibition and Carl Andre's work.
    Carl Andre: Sculpture as Place, 1958--2010 at Dia Art Foundation in Beacon spans over five decades. The retrospective includes 45 sculptures; over 160 poems and works on paper presented in wooden vitrines designed by the artist; a selection of rarely exhibited assemblages known as Dada Forgeries; and an unprecedented selection of photographs and ephemera. It's the first museum survey of Andre's entire oeuvre, and the first retrospective in North America since 1978-80.
    After premiering at Dia:Beacon, the retrospective's only venue in the United States, it will travel to museums in Europe, including Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (May 7 -- October 12, 2015); Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin (May 7 -- September 25, 2016); and Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris (October 20, 2016 -- February 12, 2017). At Dia Beacon, the exhibition runs until March 2, 2015.

      @@JacksonPolypI BELIEVE THAT CARL ANDRE IS AN EVIL. MURDERER WHO THOUGHT HE GOT AWAY WITH IT. I WAS NOT EVEN AN ADULT WHEN I BELIEVE HE MURDERED HIS WIFE, AND WAS SET FREE BY A CROOKED EVIL JUDGE. I CAN FEEL HIS SOUL IS IN HELL. I DON'T TAKE THIS LIGHTLY BECAUSE I AM A CHRISTIAN. BUT, I FEEL HE HAS GONE TO HELL. FOR BEING EVIL, CRUEL, AND A LIAR. NO WICKED EVIL HUMANS WILL EVER FOOL ALMIGHTY GOD. PEOPLE DON'T GET THAT. THEY THINK THAT IF THEY CAN FOOL STUPID FOOLS, THEN THEY ARE IN THE CLEAR. NO!! YOU STILL ANSWER TO GOD ALMIGHTY. CARL ANDRE IS IN HELL. I CAN SENSE HIS SOUL IN TORMENT RIGHT NOW. IT IS AWFUL. HE SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SO STUPID. HE HAD MANY YEARS TO COME FORTH AND TO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT HE HAD DONE. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FAR BETTER TO PAY FOR HIS EVIL ON EARTH AND ADMIT HE DID IT AND THEN TO HAVE REPENTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THE SINCERITY IN HIS SOUL WOULD HAVE WASHED HIM CLEAN. NOW HE IS PAYING FOR IT IN THE AFTERLIFE. FOR EVER. NO FRIENDS OR BUDDIES CAN BAIL HIM OUT. HE'S ALONE FOREVER AND STUCK. EVERYTIME A NEW PERSON HEARS OF WHAT HE DID, THEIR HEARTS WILL CONDEMN HIM AS EVIL. AND I BELIEVE THE JUDGE WILL BURN IN HELL TOO FOR HIS PART IN HELPING THIS EVIL ACT. MANY JUDGES WILL GO TO HELL FOR EITHER KNOWINGLY FALSELY IMPRISONING PEOPLE OR KNOWINGLY SETTING EVIL NARCISSISTIC MURDERERS FREE. ALMIGHTY GOD IS NOT PLAYING WITH THESE STUPID, ARROGANT, FOOLS.

    Perhaps they should be seen in urban spaces to really complete the picture. Then they could be abused and stolen. Now that would be a context. Note how fabulous they look in such an aesthetically perfect environment. A room of carefully placed junk from a Dollar Store would be great to look at here. It could be placed by art curators familiar with Carl's aesthetic. Thus no need for an artist at all. Really minimal.

    she goes off the trails on the subject of the "encounter" with industrial prefabricated unites and the factory "worker." Andre's Minimalism defies verbal explanation, so she feels obligated to fluff it up with some proletariat angling.

    He died 2024. And his important friend, Frank Stella died 2024, too.😢
    They shared a studio when they began their careers. Their early works may need to be re-examined in terms of collaborative exploration. It is an important epoch in art history, the birth of minimal art. Just as Georges Braque and Picasso were engaged in a joint exploration of cubism.

    This is a great example of people buying into a brand(person), and not seeing it for what it truly is... I hate to be the villain in all of this but it's just simply the way it is. Art is very subjective to the individual but when you take a plain tile floor and say that some famous artist bought the prefabbed material and simply set it on the floor, does that truly make it art? In my opinion of course not, that's ridiculous to even consider. It's a tile floor that looks like a tile floor, bought from a tile manufacture. Where is the art or sculpture or creative thinking? You are literally building a tile floor, or buying a wooden block and placing it on the floor, or a round ball.... I understand everyone is going to voice their opinion on that, but where do you draw the line on art vs someone manipulating an audience that puts trust in you and will believe and listen to what you do and say. Cmon now?

    • @yanagoncheva4416
      @yanagoncheva4416 Před 2 lety

      What if the artist became famous with this tile on the floor, then is it buying into a brand? The bran of this artist is defined by tiles on the floor as funny as it sounds. I completely understand your frustration but i think that what artists do is manipulate your perception and since there is no actual definition of art i think that what is art is subjective to what you believe art to be. This to me means that if i perceive tiles on the floor to be art then they are... to me. To you they are not and that is fine. As you said it is subjective to the individual

    • @DJayAce4
      @DJayAce4 Před 2 lety

      @@yanagoncheva4416 Fair enough. I just think art should be created by the artist, not bought and placed on a display for it's intended use, in it's exact same form, only to be reclaimed by an artist for it to now be considered his "art".
      Okay just re-watched some of the vid. Had to revisit it b/c it's been a year lol. This is more about the artist selling people the story behind why the artist chose a particular item to be placed in a particular spot or corner in a room. It's more about a story rather than the item itself. Basically the story is the art, not the piece itself. The item/art itself was already created by someone else. His "art" is more about the story he is trying to portray after placing the item in a certain way on the floor. He's a "story artist" if you want to call it that lol. His goal is to get people to think and to use their own imaginations, that's why he is so heavily focused on being simplistic. It makes the viewer focus heavily on the storyline rather than a simplistic wood block that was created by someone else. Him fabricating his own items would ultimately take away from what he is trying to achieve. You are forced to use your imagination no matter what, sense he didn't actually create the items. Whatever that form of art would be called, not sure but I'll just call it "story art".
