Did a report on this for my history class at JCC in Watertown. My teacher was Jim Fitzpatrick, sadly he has passed. Was a member in the Yorker club in high school. This state has so much history to explore. Been to the museum once, hoping to go back and spend more time.
Let's be 100% clear on this; the Black River Canal would never have been built without the Erie's need for a large water source near it's headwaters in Rome. By connecting the Black River into the canal system from the north, that source was assured. Any commercial benefit to those north of the Mohawk river valley was merely a happy coincidence of the political demands made by those representing them in the negotiations that made for a fully functioning canal rather than a simple drainageway, as would have been the undertaking based on a purely economic model.
3:14 What is the purpose of the barrels on the roof? I grew up on the Texas Gulf coast. There was very little elevation change if any. I liken the geography of the Houston area to a pool table with a few ditches. I find the canals very interesting. As a public school subject the Erie was mentioned but the boom in canal building was not.
