音楽と人、そして楽器。さまざまな表現手段の中から、なぜギターを選んだのか？　そんな素朴な疑問にフォーカスを当て、プレイヤーの内面に深く迫る連載企画「Why We Play」。今回は、独特の奏法と楽曲で、世界を魅了する新進気鋭のギタリスト“ichika”。SNSに演奏動画を投稿し始めてわずか2年ほどだが、インスタグラムのフォロワーはすでに8万人を超えた。しかもその多くが海外のフォロワーだ。ギター／ベースの新しい可能性を切り開こうとしているichikaへのインタビュー。前半は、楽器を始めたきっかけや独特の奏法について聞いた。

Translation : I was first exposed to music through my grandmother that played jazz piano which ignited my interest and I started to enjoy jazz music when I was 3 years old.
Up until elementary, I didn’t have any interest in string instruments, but one day I just thought why not, and started to play around with my fathers bass. Then I realized “this instrument is also unique in it’s own way”, which lead me to go through my father’s cd’s. It was then, that I came across the band Iron Maiden. Discovering heavy metal from a jazz standpoint was so refreshing and different, I was amazed. I then looked up to Steve Harris (bassist of Iron Maiden) and played a 4 string bass like crazy.
I kept on playing electric bass all through middle school thinking I was going to become a bassist. But one day, I thought about picking up the guitar, and that was how I started to play the electric guitar.
Piano solo pieces are really popular even among people that don’t do music or play an instrument. However I realized there aren’t any major solo guitar/bass pieces, so I thought I should make that music that attracts, and touch people, even people that aren’t interested in music. I just really wanted to create something like that.
It was when I was a sophomore/junior when my ambitions to play music really started to solidify, and made me want to create and perform. I studied the instrument’s structure and mechanisms to mix and create my style of playing I have right now.
Unlike pianos, I think the amount of emotion you can put into a single note on a guitar is enormous. This may be a little extreme and maybe I’m wrong but, when you press down on a key on the piano, even for a person that doesn’t play, it makes a sound. There’s really only playing strong and weak, so even for a professional pianist, the range of emotion can be quite narrow.
But guitars, there must be more than I am aware right now. The amount of emotion you can put in a single note is endless: for the left hand there is vibrato, how strong you hold down the string, where you put your finger, which is also something that applies to the right hand.
I really think it is endless, how much information can be put in a single note. And if you add more layers of sounds onto each other, I really think this is an instrument that is limitless.
With this endless potential, I think there is music that I haven’t even heard of that maybe I can create. That is why I play guitar.
For me, I’m not really good at expressing verbally, so you might be thinking what is up with this dude, but I think the guitar is a body part for me to express and convey my emotions. But it’s also a body part that I can’t use as proficiently, so with the unlimited potential there is so much more room for me to evolve. That is something I will keep on working at, researching, studying. So he’s kind of like my wonderful, mysterious partner.
