- Horta (2024) is the stunning capital of the Faial Island. Faial is part of the Azores archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and part of Portugal. The Azores are halfway Europe and the Americas. The Etymology of the name Horta is uncertain. Although Horta or Hortus in Greek means Green Vegetables, the name could also be derived from the Flemish nobleman Van Huerter who arrived on the island in 1467. In Portuguese 'Horta' means 'Orchard'. Faial island has 15,000 inhabitants of which around 7,000 live in Horta.
Main attractions of the city are the marina, the Mount Guia, the churches of Carmo and Angustias Churches, the Miradoura of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, the Santa Cruz Fortress, the Dragon Tree in the public Park, the Town Hall, the Horta Bay and the Whale Museum.

I was able to see Horta from a cruise ship. Wasn't able to get off. During a recent transatlantic cruise on Oasis of the Seas Miami to Barcelona Spain there was a medical emergency on the ship that needed hospital medical care and Horta was the closest town as we were making our way to Spain . We stopped for a couple of hours while the evacuate the woman from the ship. I was able to capture some great shots of this enchanting looking town in the Azores which I definitely want to come back sometime and actually stay a few days .
