    A criminal background does not bar you from working in the field. I had a university criminology professor who served 7 years in federal prison. In fact a criminal background and a degree is actually an advantage

    I think it is a good thing that TV shows don't show the truth about this field. That way true criminals will not know how crimes are solved

    I am graduating in December with a bachelors in criminal justice and a minor in sociology. I am in between becoming a criminologist or a paralegal. I am considering going to graduate school but if I do what would I need to get my masters in if I choose a criminologist? And where do you recommend I try to find an entry level job at for starting a criminologist career?

    • @timtamtalks
      @timtamtalks  Před 3 lety +10

      Hey! From research I would suggest that doing a Masters in Criminology or Criminal Justice. That would give you the chance to apply to a broad array of jobs in that field. For example with a Criminology/Criminal Justice Masters Degree you could also be a Criminal Law Paralegal as well as a Criminologist. For a paralegal specifically I've read that a certificate in paralegal studies from a program approved by the American Bar Association would help increase your chance of employment. Also an internship with a legal attorney (that specializes in criminal law) would also help as well.
      And for Criminologist internships. This website provides a GREAT list of places to look: www.ccsu.edu/criminology/internships.html
      But please take my advice with a grain of salt and also maybe talk to some of your university professors to see what advice they can give you as well.
      Helpful links: (please read them they also provide tons of helpful advice)

I was planning on minoring in psychology as well as majoring in criminal justice. Do you think I should minor in sociology instead? Also, did you like majoring in criminal justice?

    hii, just a curiosity.. what if I want to become a Criminal Profiler? What do I have to study? Are Criminal Profilers even allowed to analyze the crime scene?? I would like to do the same job of the 2 special agents of Mindhunter, but I'm really confused on what to study.

    • @timtamtalks
      @timtamtalks  Před 2 lety

      hi! here is a really good description of what a criminal profiler is: www.thebalancecareers.com/criminal-profiling-career-information-974482
      what you need to become a criminal profiler: www.indeed.com/recruitment/c/info/what-is-a-profiler
      and a good definition/resource: "The criminal profiling process is defined by the FBI as a technique used to identify the perpetrator of a violent crime by identifying the personality and behavioral characteristics of the offender based upon an analysis of the crime committed."
      "The process generally involves (1) evaluation of the criminal act itself, (2) comprehensive evaluation of the specifics of the crime scene(s), (3) comprehensive analysis of the victim, and (4) evaluation of preliminary police reports. Additional steps are (5) evaluation of the medical examiner's autopsy protocol, (6) development of a profile with critical offender characteristics, and (7) investigative suggestions predicated on construction of the profile. Criminal profiling is particularly useful in hostage negotiation, and identification of writers of threatening letters, rapists, arsonists, and sexual murderers[...]. Criminal profilers at the FBI may also provide interrogation and interview techniques, establish probable cause for search warrants, and provide testimony as expert witnesses. Criminal profiling is not a substitute for skilled detective work; but it is a tool that the detective can use to help solve a violent crime"
      (quote from here: www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/criminal-profiling-viable-investigative-tool-against-violent-crime)
      i recommend reaching out to universities that you'd like to go to, ask them about their programs and ask if you can get in touch with a professor that can provide you with more information about this career 💛
      as always take my advice with a grain of salt. i hope this helps💕

    • @timtamtalks
      @timtamtalks  Před 2 lety +2

      Hey Mujeeb ~The best college depends on the state you'd like to live in, and your budget. It would be hard to advise you where to go without knowing your needs first. I advise that you take a look at this link (study.com/articles/Best_Undergraduate_Criminology_Programs_List_of_Top_Schools.html ) It'll help you guide you in the right direction. I recommend that you do lots of research or maybe speak to some career counselors at your high school, or even your parents before deciding which college you want to go to. You can even contact/email some of these universities directly and they would always be happy to tell you more about their degrees. Hope this helps! 💙
