I have a base set up similar to this so I can see all my building levels and compare then switch back over to my real base. I'm thinking he was just on to check something and either forgot to switch it back or got logged for inactivity by accident and got attacked during that time. The wall around the trees and stuff might be to make the base work after they appeared.

But the x-mas trees, gem box, and tombstone would still be in the middle of his base, he would've had to leave gaps in the middle for those to spawn/remain there

This was a trolling base. The owner of this base usually uses this for being online and to organize his defenses so he knows where his defenses are and what level they are. It also gives an advantage to him because no one knows what his real base looks like and how to counter it.
He must have gotten kicked or logged off and did not change his base. So someone got some free loot!

My thoughts come from something I do...I have one of my bases set up so I can easily see what I have to upgrade and collect stuff all in one row instead of roaming around the map to do it. occassionally I forget to reset to a farming or trophy base and leave this style base up...I kick myself as soon as I log in the next time.
