He had no kick. The hot competition ran the first 200 meters in 24.40 which means their legs must turn to mush in the last 100 meters. The leaders came back to Valery in the home straight.
Wow. I'm dead after running a 54 400m dash, and these guys can get 51 without even trying...and they still have juice left to run a second 400 meters. Purely amazing.
I think Kipketer still remains the best ever 800m runner the world has seen. The most 1:41and 1:42 times, consistent and very unfortunate with illness and injury over the years. He deserved at least one Olympic gold.
@@jeremyschlichting823 By Far Zottle. Wottle was so far behind at the end of the first 400m that the announcers were wondering if he was hurt. Waddle didn't even catch the back of the pack until 500m had been run. And he didn't catch the leader until the last meter of the race. This is a great race by the Russian, but it doesn't even come close to comparing with what Wottle did in Munich in 72. And Wottle won graciously without any big fanfare - no collapsing at the end of the race, no covering his hands with his face and getting all misty. No running around the track yelling #1 and posing for pic's with a flag. Wottle was one cool dude...
Guy who left my school 2 years ago ran a 1:50 at 18 years old. Now the fastest runner in Australia over 800m with 1:45 at only 21 years of age.. Pretty impressive.
If you are a young kid or novice reading this, the best way to run the 800 is with an even pace. If you run it in 2:00 minutes don't pass the quarter mile in 55 seconds or less. an even pace will have you flying by guys in the final 200 yards. If you don't believe me just look at dave wottle's run in the 1972 olympic finals. It doesn't look like it but he actually ran an even pace.
I recommend doing a lot of negative split interval workouts such as 6 800's starting at a somewhat challenging pace such as 2:35 and dropping 5 seconds every 2 800's. So the first two would be 2:30, the next 2 would be 2:25 and so on. Do your last 800 all out. I'm a 400 runner but I do a very similar interval workout and i've gone from a 53.8 to 52.0
@Chocosizzles In 400m the most popular strategy is the "four P's strategy" Go out hard for the first 100m (push), relax but try maintaining that speed on the back stretch (pace), put more effort around the second bend (position), and give everything you have for the home straight (pray). Michael Johnson used that exact strategy and his 100m splits in his 43.18 400m WR were 11.1, 10.12, 10.44, and 11.52, THATS a sprint.
@Chocosizzles Thats true, It's impossible to sprint 400m full out but the overall pace of a 400m is a sprint, thats what I meant. 800m runners that are also sprinters doesn't mean anything, there are many 400m/800m doublists that doesn't make 800m a sprint just like it doesn't make 400m middle distance..
@MrNony64 true...and i don't mean to downplay other races or events...ur right all races are hard...i mean look at pole vault...so technical, and a very hard field event...but i'm just saying a true 800m athlete must combine the elements of leg speed with endurance in order to perform at their best...there is very little room for error. and its is almost a uniquely exhausting race mentally and physically.
Lol,I'm an 800 meter runner, but i run a 400 sometimes. I'm 16 year old and weight 63kg.Times are : 400m 53.34 and 800m 2.01.91 I have to get up to 1.57 this year. Some kid with the same age ran 1.51 .Hes going to the EOF . .
sa baka So what? How many athletes in the world run for "adopted" countries? How smart r u? U must be arrogant 'bout what goes on in the present world!
thats a wonderful time. it seems that everyone on here has ran incredible times, good job people. God has given you all wonderful talent, work hard in life, and don't forget to give God thanks every day, for each day is a gift. take care.
@SlimeSisters Mine too. Junior in High School. Pretty Average. Indoor 800m: 2:04 400m: 52 Suffered a couple injuries so those aren't where they should be. Can't wait for outdoor. Your times?
@Zamir143 i would say 800m because you have to be going at a almost constant pace the whole time, you can't pace yourself. 400m is one lap of constant fast pace, 800m is two laps.

He always runs like that, saving his power to the last 100-200 m. It's tactics and he's absolutly brilliant
The most elegant athlete! Krasavchik! Tak derzhat! Greetings from Kazakhstan!!!!
Borzakovskiy's racing style is the most fun to watch. Its nail biting on the edge of your seat. and always awesome!
yuriy's kick is just phenomenal

LOL! The commentators sound soooo disappointed when Borzakovskiy won!
Maybe they was hoping for Kipketer to win... unlucky dude lost to 3 White Europeans in 1996, 2000, & 2004.
The best race in history. Beautiful!
Na that’s the 2012 800m, in my opinion.
It is greatest race what i see ever
This race looked VERY similar to the 1972 race won by Dave Wottle with a furious closing kick.
I think Kipketer still remains the best ever 800m runner the world has seen. The most 1:41and 1:42 times, consistent and very unfortunate with illness and injury over the years. He deserved at least one Olympic gold.
I'm 74 and I run this race in 24 hours, 6 minutes.
Straight trash old man
Superb run. One of the best races I've ever seen. Similar to Savinova in Daegu and again in London this year.
Yuri is a great finisher
What an athlete, timed it to perfection!
my favourite race ever!!!
One of the greatest come from behind wins in a track final at the games.
+Bren Walsh Nah Dave Wottle

HOLY SHIT!! THE WHITE GUY WON :O

They ran the race....I'm having the heart attack.
i have to run the 800m tommarow for a track meet, my best time is 2:10 , these guys are just crazy

wow that was one hell of a kick by the Russian guy. He looked like he was running on one of those flat sidewalks at the airport on that final 100M
Yuriy Borzakovskiy has one of the best running styles ive ever seen.. He lost to Nick Symmonds how ever, I was shocked.!
I never doubted Borzakovsky could win this, and I got hassles for it... but he got there! I think he won me five bucks from my mate. Good man!
The 800 is one of the funnest to watch.
Wow. That finish and coming from like fourth blows my mind.
@SirCokeBoy that's great it's good to see your team is improving so fast
240p we meet again
There is nothing progressive about that video.
Tip of the hat to Dave Wottle. Imitation the greatest form of flattery
that was amazing! the way he came thru frm outside a medal position....amazing

i enjoy watching the tactical races more sometimes.

thanks .
The 800 is definitely one of the hardest races in track and field.
Finishing time was somewhat slow relative to the WR/typical times, wasn't it? Or is that just because it was before Rudisha?
@SirCokeBoy what grade are you in though? im in grade 10 and i ran 2:16 and made it to east provincials.
Amazing kick
Awesome tactical race!
Sorry for the double post, I just actually watched the video. HOLY SHIT, that was an epic finish. 5th to 1st in under 200m.
@Zamir143 have you run a 3000 or 1500?
Ohh my God, He pulled a Dave Wottle! I can't believe it!
he deserves gold because it was a race and he won. he raced smarter. even if it wasnt as impressive
What does Borzakovskiy do best in: slow, medium or fast paced races?
I won 800 meters in school today and won! I went from second last to first in the first 800 meters! My time was 2:33 and I'm 15.
@Eatfoody what grade are you in

.
.
Face of a man knowing he’ll never fulfill his dream of Olympic gold 😢
Real God of running!
ty
That's why its the best race ever. Takes a true runner to run a good 800
wow what an amazing kick
I Had a Track Meet tonight and ran a 2:25.88 which is my best right now and im going to regionals.
Really a great race by the Russian, but man, truly heartbreaking that the Master Kipketer had to go home without a gold.
denmark ain't his real home,he is an african
sa baka So what? How many athletes in the world run for "adopted" countries? How smart r u? U must be arrogant 'bout what goes on in the present world!
I'm glad kipketer didn't win
Can't be good enough.
Kipketer had his change in 1996 but refused to represent kenya so I guess he never need a gold then because he was so dedicated to Denmark
But why are their starting lines staggered if they all cut over to lanes 1 and 2 anyway? How does that work out?
The most aggressive event in running, because it is the fastest event, after 200 metres, out of individual lanes.
that was awesome!
Very good point although the average person wouldn't search for these type of videos.
niice, today i had my meet came first in my division, second overall. I blew a pretty good lead but still advance:P
thats a wonderful time. it seems that everyone on here has ran incredible times, good job people. God has given you all wonderful talent, work hard in life, and don't forget to give God thanks every day, for each day is a gift. take care.
@SlimeSisters
Mine too.
Junior in High School. Pretty Average.
Indoor
800m: 2:04
400m: 52
Suffered a couple injuries so those aren't where they should be.
Can't wait for outdoor.
Your times?
wow, there was only one guy in this race with compression shorts; now, pretty much everyone running under a mile (and some above) has them
when I was 10 I drank all my milk and my mum gave me a big hug!
The 800M is the hardest race period.
@SirCokeBoy our jv runs 2:00 flat, what are you guys 2A?
RIP Mbulaeni Mulaudzi
(Silver medalist)
Great finish
@Zamir143 i would say 800m because you have to be going at a almost constant pace the whole time, you can't pace yourself. 400m is one lap of constant fast pace, 800m is two laps.

commentators seem completely underwhelmed. great finish!
