Kendal mint cake is used as a survival food for hikers and mountaineers. It’s so packed with energy.
I was on my way to say that exact thing! :P
It’s like eating a bar of mint flavoured sugar.
@@okantichrist It's not just like that, it is that 😛It's mint flavoured icing sugar.
You forgot to mention how disgusting it is.
@@timholder6825you heathen! It’s absolutely wonderful. Just because you have incredibly uneducated taste buds doesn’t make you correct. I bet you don’t like trebor extra strong mints either, you heathen you! Kendal mint cake and trebor extra strong mints completely saved my life while I was commuting by train. It didn’t matter what the person next to me smelled like because all I could smell was mint.
I can easily polish off a whole packet of Jaffa cakes at one sitting! Shamefully! 😂
I pretty much inhale Jaffa Cakes :D
3 rolls of Jaffa cakes
No shame.
Who doesn't eat a whole pack ??
A mate of mine polished off one of those 1m long boxes in 3 minutes flat. Beat me by 30 seconds.
Twiglets are basically Marmite flavoured. (Though not officially)
And I LOVE them.
The Guinness crisps also contain yeast extract and also malt extract which might explain the confused taste, actually Marmite uses spent yeast from the brewing industry.
If you want pickled onion crisps you gotta try Monster Munch.
Absolutely! Voted in the Top 10 of the UKs favourite crisps a while ago, with the Beef flavour also in there too
God tier
Im from Kendal where they make mintcake. It’s not designed to be a snack, Kendal is a mountain town in the Lake District, it’s home to all Englands biggest mountains & mintcake was designed to help mountaineers because at high altitudes the body craves sugar and oxygen more than anything. The oxygen situation cannot be helped other than using supplemental bottled O2, however mintcake is perfect for high altitudes as it contains a crazy amount of caramelised sugar. It’s essentially the worlds first energy bar & was used by Everest’s earliest ascendants George Mallory & Edmund Hillary.
The idea behind Kendall Mint Cake is you would take some with you if you are going Hiking or Cycling to give you energy, it's essentially pure sugar.
Most people take a Monster with them now !
I ate way too much as a kid, got home and was so sick . I’ve not touched it since 😂
You were right, Twiglets are marmite flavoured. Jaffa is a variety of orange, hence the name, although you can get other flavours of Jaffa cakes now You will have made a lot of Brits very happy with the 10/10!
Jaffa is a town in Israel where the Oranges come from.
@@SvenTvikingbut is also a seedless orange
The one thing I agree with Queen Boomer about. They're horrid, but they wouldn't be if they weren't so bitter.
Boycie in Only Fools and Horses is a Jaffa 🤣@@SvenTviking
I don't think anyone in the history of mankind only had 1 jaffa cake if they had a whole package of them in front of them 😂😂😂
It's a marketing ploy - one Jaffa cake leads to two more until the packet is empty.
Also the spongey bit goes hard if you don't eat them all in a single sitting - this is unsubstantiated...
You should try a custard cream dunked in a cuppa tea or coffee.👌
That's only way I can eat them if I got pack of them have 2 have a coffee
Fatal.
The entire packet would be consumed in one cuppa
@@0utcastAussie yep that's what normally happens
I was hoping they had bourbon biscuits in their box, cos I prefer hose over custard creams
There quite bland not my go to biscuit
Regarding Jaffa Cakes, the "cookie" isn't "just like a little cake", it is one and we have a judge's ruling to prove it. That's right, the manufacturers, McVities, took the Inland Revenue (IRS) to court here in the UK and baked a giant Jaffa Cake to prove that it was in fact a cake and not a biscuit (cookie). That's because in the UK, for some reason, the standard rate of VAT (sales tax) isn't applied to chocolate covered cakes, but is to chocolate covered biscuits. McVities won the case so they are legally cakes, not biscuits/cookies.
Bonus Fact: This can be proved by how they age. Cakes get harder and biscuits get softer. A Jaffa Cake will harden if left out uneaten
or at least it was until the Infernal Revenue changed the VAT on cakes to bring them in line with biscuits.
@@stuartfaulds1580 No, theyre still zero rated, buddy
www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/vat-food/vfood6200
Jaffa cakes are of course cakes that goes hard when stale, real biscuits go soft, but real cookie (not US cookies 'real biscuits') also go hard when stale.
@@neuralwarp basically if you don't eat the entire sleeve before they are open to the air for too long.
They aren't Cookies! 🥴
How do you not like Jelly Tots? This is outrageous.
You should check out some of the old Chewitts adverts from the 1980s.
Even chewier than Barrow-In-Furness bus depot!
There was actually a court case involving Jaffa Cakes. The government wanted to charge VAT (basically a sales tax) on them because they were biscuits but the makers said that they were cakes not biscuits so not subject to VAT and to prove their case they baked one that was the size of a normal cake that you would cut slices from. The key is the base being sponge rather than hard biscuit. The makers won their case.
Came here to look for others intoning the line about Barrow in Furness
If you're a fan of Jaffa cakes try a Terry's chocolate orange.
They used to do a chocolate lemon, but it was discontinued.
We have had Terry’s chocolate Oranges in the US for over 14 years, so most of us here have tried them.
The toffee chocolate orange is the best after 40 years of eating it
@@marydavis5234is it the same chocolate? All English chocolate is banned from us stores it has to be imported. Like duty free but was pushed out long ago in threat of law suits
wasn't like that in 2019-2020 when I was in WNY. there was a fair selection of british stuff in the stores.@@CZcamsstolemylife
The reason the jaffa cake is soft, is because it ain't a cookie, it's a cake....in the words of Al Murray "The clue is in the name FFS, dozy yank"😂😂
I heard a story that they actually won a court case proving they were cakes and not a biscuits by saying "when a cake goes off it goes hard and when a biscuit goes off it goes soft. Jaffa Cakes go hard when they go off so therefore they are cakes" - something like that anyway.
@@YannickoYT Didn't know that....hey, never too old to learn!
@@Topgooner01 Haha exactly. That's why you don't pay VAT on Jaffa Cakes because cakes are excluded from VAT
What about kendal mint cake lol
This poor woman hasn’t been in this much distress since being in labour, all thanks to British Kendal mint cake, and strangely she liked it, much love Callie you and your fluffy brain survived the experience ✌️❤️🇬🇧
Kendal Mint Cake is named after the Cumbrian town of Kendal (on the border of the Lake District national park). It's not really a snack. It's for emergencies if you are lost/injured walking the hills. It's basically just peppermint flavoured compressed sugar, to provide a palatable(ish), high concentration of energy to keep you alive through the night/storm.
Often bought by tourists as a momento of their travels to the Lake District and Highlands of Scotland. 99.999% of people do not eat it for pleasure.
It lasts ages in a backpack survival kit (years), is compact, light and is full of energy. At 2am, in a storm, on top of a mountain? This is what you want on you. Hill people will often have one in the car too during winter, in case they breakdown or get stuck in snow and have to wait for rescue.
Jaffas are a type of seedless orange and a Londoner insult; ''he's a Jaffa, no pips!''
Guys, you're navigating a fucking minefield with this one. Custard creams and Jaffa Cakes are probably the UKs most loved biscuits lol
I agree with Jaffa cakes but every week i help put on a Coffee morning and every week custard creams left on plate, i think they are vile.
@@nealgrimes4382 In the words of Greta Thunberg ....... How dare you !!! lol (:.:)7
@@Enigmatic.. The filling of Custard creams is like babysick.
And you know this how? 😁@@nealgrimes4382
Custard creams are 🤢
So funny, QB’s facial expressions at the twiglets, I’ll monster a bag of those in one go. Starburst used to be called opal fruits when I was a kid, they were “made your mouth water” there are ads for them on here.
I love Kendal mint cake i just wish they could get a bit more sugar in it 😋😂🐦.
Love Jaffa Cakes! They did an advert where a lady was eating them infront of children saying ‘Full Moon…Half Moon..Total Eclipse’ It always comes to mind when eating them! Classic U.K. Advert! Love your videos. Love from the U.K. xx
LOL 4:37 my cat makes that face often!
Not being mean at QB, just was so funny to see!
Brilliant thanks K&QB!
In the UK we have a whole range of biscuits that we commonly dunk in tea, and that many people only eat when they're having a cup of tea, such as Custard Creams, Bourbon Creams, Digestives, Hob Nobs...to name but a few. Maybe you could give them a try with a brew?
Hence the series of “This tea’s too wet” ads.
“Too wet?”
“If you were to give me one of those McVities digestltives…”
How the hell have I lived in Ireland for 20 years and I've never seen a pickled onions flavour tayto?
It’s the Northern Irish tayto
@@ryancurry2911 If is it's new. Cheese and Onion is their best flavour.
@@dodgeme4555 yeah, I’m not sure about flavours but the packaging is the exact same as the northern tayto
When I was a kid, our school went on a week long field trip to the Lake District. Whenever we had any long walks or climbs to do, we were all forced to eat Kendal Mint cake and none of us had, had it before. It was such a shock to the mouth!! Gave us plenty energy for those hills though!
Cadbury's mini rolls are a must that you need to try
In teaes laughing at Queen Boomer and the "Minty siap bar!" Classic.
Custard creams go great with coffee. Especially for dipping. It's a must try.
Tea! Heathen! ;p
I hate them babysick filling.
Hilarious! The twiglet section is good!!!! Queen Boomers reaction was very cat like, I remember as an irresponsible and stupid child giving my cat toothpaste and the reaction was similar
Custard creams are even better when dunked in tea. Do not dunk Jaffa cakes in tea and the way King Boomer pronounces it is correct!
In the style of David Attenborough
Twiglets in the UK naturally appear in the Hogmanay/New Year. Prior to this they horde themselves quietly on shelves awaiting their chosen companion. After some time a partner arrives, it could be the Lesser spotted African Pinotage, Smirnofficus Vodkamus, Pink Ginious, Larger Canninus, Cider Canninus or the Rum Bat. Alongside some of these potential partners are their symbiotic sides of Cola Cannicus and the Yellow Tonic Bottle.
Pairing is difficult, as the partner is normally reluctant at first to accept them into their group. After a while of moving in and out they eventually decide to settle. Finding themselves transported from what was once their home with many Twiglets to a solitary life alone in a cupboard. Fear not, their romance was not short lived. As the hour comes near they are moved to join the company with the likes of Cheesy Puffigus, the Great Pringle and the vast array of wonderful things that meet at the same watering hole. All are consumed.
My dad always bought them at Xmas so they taste of Xmas to me 😂
@cheryltotheg2880 for me they are one of the items on the Hogmanay table that are not touched much until folks have plenty liquor or fizz down them. Then they are annihilated.
I LOVE twiglets, love the salty bitterness flavour 😋
They taste like burnt toast to me.
Those Tayto crisps are the ones from here in Northern Ireland. There's also a different Tayto crisp in the Republic of Ireland (with fewer flavours). It's a national point of friendly rivalry between the two parts of the country. Tayto Cheese & Onion flavour is the main one everyone goes for by far, which is much nicer than Pickled Onion and totally different.
hi gareth i was just going to say ive never seen that flavour of Tayto where i live ,and the Tayto cheese and onion bag colour is a red pk ,
Thanks for this comment, I've never even seen these tayto crisps before and was hoping someone would have said. Also never seen the choc honeycomb bar before, only crunchie 😂
@@DjRambeaux ye I haven't either I'll be looking out for it now
I think they should try both cheese and onion flavours. I think the Southern one is best tbh, and I'm from the North.
@@2011ESDAgreed - it's the only fair way to try Tayto. I prefer the Northern ones but if I'm stuck I'll have either in a buttered crisp sandwich. I'm right on the border so have often had both.
Jaffa Cakes are best eaten from the fridge, it gives a nice snap on the chocolate when you bite them. Try dipping the custard creams in a hot cup of tea, they are great dunking biscuits.
I agree Jaffa cakes are delicious from the fridge. No we would never dunk them in Tea as they are more of a cake. But we would drink a cup of tea with them. Custard creams can be dunked. There is another British biscuit called a chocolate bourbon. They are our equivalent to your Oreo biscuit.
Kindle mint cake used to be included in British military survival kits and life boat supplies. It’s almost pure sugar and full of calories.
It's Kendal mint cake, Kendal is in the lake district.
Sorry for the typo.
Twiglets are part of Christmas snacking here. Love them!!
Fun fact: in 1953 when Sir Edmund Hillary ascended Everest the team took 38lbs of Kendall Mint Cake as part of their high altitude rations
Twiglets are an acquired taste..i love em..then i like marmite
Custard creams are a good dunking biscuit
This is probably my English snobbery coming out, but my toes curl when you Americans say 'candy' referring to all sweets, and 'cookie' referring to all biscuits...........I'm sure I'll get past it one day lol.
Love these kinda vids, keep it up!
HOW have you guys even existed in daily life without Jaffa cakes over there!!!!!!!!!! Wow!
I must say, I live around the corner from the Hills Biscuit factory and when they are making the Ginger Nuts, it smells lush with the aroma of ginger in the air
The musical score on this piece was spot on. Really added to the drama…
It is difficult to refrain from eating the whole tube of Jaffa Cakes when one's tea is hot. Hmmm Jaffa Cake....
Locker room is the funniest description of a flavour i have ever heard!
I feel the context is sometimes missing in these: Kendall Mint Cake is not something people eat everyday, I suspect 90% of the population have never seen one. They have a reputation as a "survival" food to take if you're going mountaineering. Jelly tots are specifically aimed at very young children, I'm not sure if anyone older than 7 would actively seek them out. There's not really anything Irish in this box at all other than a couple of brand names. Sweet chilli, pickled onion and Guinness flavoured crisps are available everywhere across the UK and Ireland from multiple brands. I wouldn't dunk a jaffa cake I can't imagine orange and tea go that well together but everyone has different preferences.
He is Mr. Tayto and the best flavour is cheese and onion. Tayto is also Irish.
You should watch a video on how to open a wrapper.
Kendal mint cake, great for energy, mountain climbers swear by it,basically pure sugar
The biggest problem with Jaffa cakes is that after you have one if you don't have more you can't stop thinking about having more. They are one of the most easily devourable things in the world. I will routinely open the box to have one or two while watching something with the missus and they will be gone in minutes.
Kendal mint cake is like an energy bar.... they were take to the south pole by explorers an the top of everest.
There's a big clue in what a Jaffa Cake is the clue is the word CAKE!
I love Java cakes but the truth is most supermarket’s own brand tastes even better. The base isn’t a cookie, it’s a sponge aka cake! 😋
Yeah. I prefer the Lidl ones. The orange is a bit tangier.
I've got a stock of Kendal mint cake for when I'm out walking the hills and mountains. Perfect energy boost on accents.
Does it make you understand them better? 😛
We need to talk about crisp packet colourings. Eg; purple = pickled onions. Different brands will use the same colours as others. Also, does anyone remember salt n' vinegar being 'blue' and cheese n' onion being 'green'?
Golden wonder still have that colour scheme :)
Purple can also mean Worcester Sauce flavour
King and Queen. Marks and Spencer are now selling chocolate covered Custard Creams. They are fantastic 🙂
Shame I’m too poor to shop there
@@definitelynotatroll246 they do Chocolate covered Bourbon as well but I’ve only seen them not purchased.
@@jameskearney7688 bourbons are already chocolate, chocolate covered chocolate lol
16:33 McVities makers of the Jaffa Cake famously won a court case about this.
It's bad luck to leave a pack of Jaffa Cakes unfinished. On the subject of British snacks, we took the kids to Cadbury World today and we came home with ALL the diabetus.
I am amazed you managed to eat the Jaffa Cake and there were some remaining!
Despite the comments, not all Brits like custard creams. I find them sickly. Plus chocolate bourbons costing a little more are nicer than vanilla cream biscuits.
Got to love Twiglets. Amazing.
Got to see more of Queen Boomer 😂
Lockeroom foot killed me 😆
I just love that Queen B and I have the same taste in snacks. I was ridiculously happy that she liked custard creams. A favourite in my house. ❤ Don't worry about the baby brain, it goes away, eventually.
mine never went and my boys are in their mid/late 2os
Hi Q.B., it was good to see you enjoyed the Jaffa Cakes. Those along with Terry`s Chocolate Orange, are the two combinations of Chocolate & Orange people tend to enjoy. You need to secure your pack when any are left, as being a cake they can go hard if left exposed to the air. I tend to use freezer clips to secure the end of the pack & return them to the box.
I love white chocolate and cherry Jaffa cakes, theyre off the scale yummy
WARNING; As Americans you may be unaware of the problem with Jaffa Cakes.
Once you start eating one, you will eat them all.
In the U.K. you can buy a metre (3.28 feet) of Jaffa Cakes. and we eat them all in 1 sitting!
UK custard is also known as Creme Anglaise a normal UK pickled onion is almost the exact opposite of an American 'pickle' but....the extra strong ones will blow your head off
I don't mind the twiglets, kendals mint cake Is like eating toothpaste, you guys should try flying saucers they are tangy goodness surrounded by rice paper
Mr Bean literally cut twigs off a tree and dipped them in Marmite to imitate Twiglets lol
One of the best moments from Mr Bean 👍
As if you guys got some mint cake🤣 im from kendal and always forget how popular it actually is outside of this little town
Twiglets are flavoured with yeast extract, so you're essentially right in saying Marmite. It's an acquired taste but grows on you.
Pickled onion flavoured Monster Munch are delicious, but they're quite strong. Real pickled onions are even stronger and can make your eyes water. They're most popular in northern England.
Fun fact about Guinness: It used to be recommended to pregnant women due to it's high iron content. Not so much these days due to it's alcohol content.😬
There was a famous court case between McVities and the Inland Revenue over whether Jaffa cakes are cakes or biscuits. Biscuits are subject to tax, cakes aren't. It was decided because they're made from sponge which can go stale they're officially cakes.
People often eat the sponge first, then the chocolate, then the orange bit. And then the rest of the packet!😋
I love you guys, such wholesome content!
Star bursts were actually a British sweet called opel fruits, but i believe that a US company bought them and changed the name to starburst.
Also, I believe that to get around the biscuits tax jaffa is actually a cake...something like that
*Opal fruits.
Your right Starburst used to be called Opal Fruits and the tv advert jingle was “ opal fruits made to make your mouth water”
Lol! I was honestly sat thinking, what were Starburst originally called before the name change. I just could not remember, so thank you for that. It's weird as I still call Snickers, Marathons. 🤣
Anyone remember Spangles?
Opal Fruits were originally made by the American company Mars and later by The Wrigley Company, also an American company.
You can't beat a package of Keogh's crips, that's the truth.
Jaffa Cakes ..... That cookie is a cake .... There's a clue in the name ;)
I think there is a thing with Jaffa Cakes although sold in the biscuit isle in stores, they are exempt from a certain tax as they called them cakes, not biscuits. I think there was a court case about wither they were a biscuit or a cake.
Edit: Just looked it up, Value added tax is added to chocolate covered biscuits but not chocolate covered cakes, they had to prove Jaffas were in fact cakes.
Yeah, and if I remember correctly they did it by baking a giant jaffa cake.
The main point in the case was that when a cake spoils it goes hard and when a biscuit spoils it goes soft. They demonstrated that jaffa cakes go hard when they go off thus proving its a cake, although I do believe the still stock them in the biscuit section which is completely wrong.
Vat does not apply to Jaffa Cakes because by definition: a biscuit goes soft when it goes stale but a cake does the reverse and goes hard.
Jaffa Cake biscuits go hard when stale. So legally it's a cake and cakes don't carry sales tax.
Love the t-shirt... not the locker room foot description lol!
There's a reason they're called Jaffa CAKES...(!)
The Twiglet Reaction.. priceless 😂😂.. your right they are Rank... 👍
And the most unhygienic kid who happen to chose to sit next you on the school trip used to eat them and offer you one with their saliva covered hands 🤢
I'm British & I don't know many people who likes twiglets.. they taste of burn.. these are usually put in a bowl to snack on at parties with other nibbles to snack on..
Lots of people like twiglets, they're amazing
Tayto were going to call those crisps 'locker-room foot', but were persuaded not to, by their marketing dept. 🤣
Jaffa cakes make a brilliant replacement for triffle sponges in homemade triffle!
You are the first American reactor who has enjoyed Jaffa Cakes. I love them and I love custard creams too. I work in Special Ed and the kids in my class are addicted to custard creams. I hate Twiglets as I hate Marmite. I've tried some Tayto crisps as an Irish colleague brought some over but there now available here in Scotland but not pickled onion flavour. I do like pickled onion monster munch. I like chewitts. I Iike fruit salad but my favourite flavour is their orange chewitts and the strawberry ones are good too. I used to love Jelly tots as a child. I like Starburst too. When I was a child, Starburst were called Opal Fruits and Snickers were called Marathon. My dad are Marathon until they changed the name and never are it again as he said Snickers sounded like Knickers 😂😂😂 Baby brain is real.
Used to get Kendal mint cake in ration boxes back when I was in the army. Good stuff.
Kendal mint cake is a high sugar mint flavoured energy treat for Hill walkers in the mountains of the English Lake District. Very traditional. Stout boots, woolly hat and a bar of Kendal Mint Cake
They should look at the clip of Mr. Bean making his own twiglets😂
Love you guys.. very good fun video.. Jeff from England
Kendle mint cake is an energy bar and has been around for years i have some put away in a cupboard and was pleased to see Queen Boomer try it, i now know what it looks like😂😂
Heard a random story from british soldiers when i was in army cadets, when out in africa some squadies used to give their kendal mint cake to the local kids as its packed full of sugar, but a couple of ex-squadies were caught giving the kids their firelighters thinking it was funny to see them eat it as they looked exactly the same as the mint cake
Can confirm, throwing out compo sweets for a few days, then switching for colourd in Hexi cooker blocks. Been a fave squaddiw jape for years. Have to the locals are in on it in parts of Kenya, Belize, Brunei...
Twiglets are covered in marmite or similar. They are always around at Christmas in UK - Excellent and good for you
Custard creams are good dipped in tea. That twiglets reaction was priceless QB did a great job of describing the flavour, personally I love them. For the pickled onion you should have had Monster Munch then it'd be a literal foot in your mouth. Kendal mint cake was made as a sugar boost for hikers, I believe you are supposed to break a bit off and let it dissolve in your mouth. Guinness crisps just sound like a bag of malted bitterness. Jelly tots are the kind of sweet people usually give to little kids as they are so soft. Jaffa cakes aren't really for dipping but I find them too dry, the jelly is the best bit, all I can say is "full moon, half moon, total eclipse" - the Brits will get that reference. Great review!
Kendal mint cake is an energy bar made from pure sugar and mint. Good if you need an energy boost when you've been walking for hours or over hills or up mountains.
The white Kendal mint cake tastes a bit medicinal imho however I find the brown sugar based version more palatable…
Never heard of Twiglets, Baked Treats, Romneys and Guinness Chips, Tayto best seller is Tayto Cheese & Onion, which is amazing in a sandwich. Thanks guys, good reaction, love from Ireland
You just had me driving all over my local rural town looking for TWIGLETS! I found some in a pub! Yes, RESULT!
You need tea for the custard creams. Get the Yorkshire out 👍
Kendal mint cake is almost pure sugar. It is sold to give you energy to climb the mountains near Kendal. You are supposed to break off a piece before you eat it.
I love chewits fruit salad and black Jack's. Starburst are what use to be called opril fruits 😊😊
I'd love to see u both try some Scottish Tablet. Yep it really is called "Tablet" and is rarely found outside of Scotland. If ur diabetic then forget it... 😂 Lmao at QB's breakdown over her "minty soap"😂
Twigglets were literally invented to eat when your drunk that's why they have such a strong flavour. When you have had a few try them again totally different experience.
Haha Taytos locker room foot flavor 🤣🤣
