  • A Russian submarine surfaces near a US aircraft carrier. These kinds of encounters have happened before, such as in the Mediterranean, highlighting the balance of power at sea. Even today, such incidents are not unthinkable given the current global tensions. A confrontation like this requires strategic insight and careful considerations. So, what happens next in this face-off between a Russian submarine and a US aircraft carrier? Let's find out!
    Imagine a massive aircraft carrier navigating the open seas, suddenly detecting a potential underwater threat. How does the aircraft carrier respond, and how does the submarine maneuver around advanced detection systems? The first line of defense lies in sophisticated detection methods. Powerful sonar systems act as underwater ears, releasing sound waves and analyzing returning echoes to pinpoint a submarine's location. Advanced signal processing helps differentiate between background noise and the signature sound of a submerged vessel.

    What do you think would happen if a Russian submarine actually surfaced next to a US aircraft carrier? Would it lead to an immediate confrontation, or could diplomatic negotiations de-escalate the situation? What strategies do you think both sides would use? 👇

    A colleague of mine told me of her ex’s experience on a USN Frigate. A Russian “fishing” troller aka spy troller (the troller was covered with antennas not fishing gear) kept cutting in front of frigate and stopping, forcing the frigate to go around. The frigate’s commander notified Pacific Fleet Command->Pentagon-> who called the US State Dept.->who then called the Russians. The Russians denied having any “fishing” vessels in the area. The Frigate’s commander was ordered to take what action deemed necessary. The next time the troller stopped in front of the frigate, the frigate rammed the troller and sunk it. The Russian sailer were rescued. Russia could not complain.

      Sounds like a fishing yarn...If a US frigate collided at speed with even a medium sized fishing trawler/spy ship, the US ship would take serious damage (while sinking the trawler). As deliberately ramming another ship is a grave violation of the law of the sea, regardless of how much the spy-trawler in this instance might have "deserved" it by being a dick, the US vessel would still be in the wrong.

    My neighbour is ex Royal Navy ASW rating. He was aboard HMS London during the Gulf War. When hostilities cooled down, HMS London was tied up alongside when a US CBG sailed past during the night. The skipper was up for some fun, and slipped moorings without lights and radars off. They made way as if a freighter. HMS London got inside the group and within half a mile of the Carrier, then lit up all their Radars. The CBG went mad. Not the first time UK Forces have caught the US Forces with their pants down. They did it in the Adriatic with 6 Buccaneers from Ark Royal , and twice with RAF Vulcans in simulated Nuclear strikes against NYC. Russian tactics with Kilo class subs is to lie on the bottom in known areas where CBGs frequent. Totally silent. They can then use their carrier killer weapons. Yes they lose a sub, but kill a carrier.

    my question is ... if a sub goes silent and puts itself at a location in the path of the battlegroup... could it NOT avoid detection to surface next to an aircraft carrier? i mean its not like magnetic sensors or long/short wave sound echos can scan that wide of a path.. the groups must zig zag or run routes of some kind to avoid predictable paths to avoid this method. right?

    Wherever a US aircraft carrier goes, there is always at least 1 US Submarine nearby. It's called defense in depth, meaning all threats, whether air,surface or subsurface are detected and tracked from as far away as possible and weapon systems are designed to intercept threats at different thresholds of distance. Giving a greater chance to eliminate or neutralize the threat. The chance of a Russian Submarine surfacing next to a US aircraft carrier at sea is zero to none unless it is purposely allowed, which would not happen in my opinion.

    Revealing themselves openly generally is the last thing a submarine intending to shadow a potential target wants to do. So in most contexts, it could be considered as a sign of distress and will be hailed in that regard. Normally they would be considered as a threat, but something about "law of the sea" is there about helping any fellow sailors in need. There's a real downer of a movie about K-19 that gives context to such a situation that happened.

  • @user-fu8vn7xo6c
    @user-fu8vn7xo6c Před 15 dny

    Historically, when a Soviet submarine gets too close, someone would throw a hand grenade in the area of detection to let them know that we are aware. If they were undetected, then we do have a serious problem.

  • @3DPDK
    @3DPDK Před 3 dny

    This is hypothetical. The idea that a submarine with ill intent would surface first is ludicrous regardless of who's Navy it represented. The strategic advantage a sub has is that it *hides* below the surface. It's operating procedures are designed to avoid detection. Spotting a surfaced sub of your *own* Navy is rare enough that sailors on the carrier would be scrambling to find their personal cameras.
    It's NOT the sub you can see that you should fear.
    Another point of contention with this video: If a Russian sub takes a US aircraft carrier by surprise by surfacing nearby, several particular sailors aboard the aircraft carrier will find their chief's boot lodged so far up their butts for sleeping on watch that it will have to be surgically removed.
    The only time this would happen is in close and shallow navigation areas of international waters (in which case it's more likely that the carrier took the sub by surprise), or the sub is in serious distress.

  • @MichaelJones-uw8gi
    @MichaelJones-uw8gi Před 2 dny

    OK, first of all, I doubt this happened unless it was planned and part of some joint training. Carriers NEVER travel alone and there were several surface ships around as well as an SSN out there. No sub would have gotten close enough to do this without being Pinged, buzzed or warned. As an old Diesel Boat Sailer, I know for a fact how hard it is to get close to a bird farm. We got lucky and was able to get close to the Saratoga before we were hit with loud close active sonar. Doubt this happened.

    There is always a min of 3 subs with every aircraft carrier and I know this because my father was an Australian submariner who was on an Aussie sub that photographed the underside hull of the us aircraft carrier during war games and they’d managed to slip in under it with 4 attack subs for security also 2 attack subs will go passive immediately on detection of a submarine near an aircraft carrier in other words two of the attack subs will attack and make their presence known to the threat and sacrifice themselves if necessary to protect a carrier

    If any foreign submarine surfaces within 10,000 yards of a US Navy Aircraft Carrier there is no way the carrier group does not know it is there. The submarine may not know the Carrier group is nearby if their detection systems are not operating properly but they will learn soon enough!

Or ran into another sub that he was tailgating and the Russian sub went into reverse ! Russian subs are not detectable so NO complaints were filed ! A German Type XXI Submarine was told to surrender at the end of WW 2 and did a torpedo solution on some US Navy ships and then surfaced in the mist of them to surrender ! tjl
