    After moving to New York City, you quickly realize that that downside to not owning a car is having to carry a lot of things with you - which is a challenge because NYC is not an accessible city. There are lots of stairs and uneven sidewalks. So in this video, we are going to go over the 4 types of backpacks that can be used when living in New York City that I recommend and own myself.

    A fellow backpack user! I use a backpack all the time since I love exploring and just walking everywhere. To keep my potato weight low, I only fill half my water bottle (there are a bunch of fountains in Chicago for me to refill it with) and use an eReader (although I use books from time to time since I just love them).
    And yes, always be kind and just hold your backpack in a full train/bus!

    If you are trying to visiting every station on the subway, a small travel bag is a must. I was doing this myself in October in London and you do need to carry provisions with you as you don't have much opportunity to get more
    The bag I used was a shoulder bag but it was only big enough for a sandwich, bottle of Pepsi Max and my notebook and pens. My ticket for the Underground was actually in a top shirt pocket for easy access. My phone was strapped to my belt so it didn't move as it was serving as my Stopwatch

    Outdoor backpacker here. While these school bags are fine for low loads in low heat, they’re not really conducive to long periods, high heat, or heavy potatoes.
    If you find one of these three fits your use on a given day in NYC or elsewhere, I’d strongly advise you to get a backpacking pack like you’d see outdoors. A good random example would be Osprey brand.
    These convey a number of benefits that a Jansport doesn’t have. First, it distributes the weight more evenly if you size yourself appropriately. The shoulder/muscle strain is _dramatically_ lessened.
    Second, they don’t rest against your back usually. With a traditional backpack, the bulk sits against your back. You might recognize the results of this as a giant sweat spot in the shape of the backpack on the back of your shirt. You can get backpacking bags where there is a mesh, airy space between your back and the load. This removes this problem entirely.
    Third, Osprey bags specifically (and others) are very often water proof and/or comes with an attached cover to keep it rainproof.
    In conclusion, if you are planning a day out and you’re worried at all about heat, load, or comfort, I’d warn you to stay away from school packs that aren’t meant to be worn for extended periods of time. Get yourself a nice, comfortable backpacking pack that will last you forever, and you’ll often times forget you’re even wearing it.

    As a bag aficionado, this was one of my favorite videos yet - I always agonize over what bag to bring to NY for a day or overnight trip that will be safe, functional, and look cool enough for wherever I'll be going. But tell us about your leather tote - is it Portland Leather Goods?

    We bought backpacks for our Europe trip that have hidden zippers that don't allow access unless it is off your back. Apparently backpack pickpockets are common over there. Have you heard of that being a problem in New York?

    • @UrbanCaffeine
      @UrbanCaffeine  Před 2 lety +9

      In another city I've experienced pickpocketing. I haven't experienced or heard of it in NYC. I'd say just watch your bag like any other bag. It doesn't hurt to be vigilant.

    My favorite backpack is a messenger type bag with the single diagonal strap that goes across your chest and has a quick disconnect clip on the strap. Reason is you can quickly disconnect the strap to put the bag on your lap when you sit down on the train, without having to flail your arms and possibly hit the person next to you. (works especially well on a crowded train)

    As a native New Yorker, born and bred for 53 years I do have a major issue with backpacks. While I can see their appeal from a health issue not wanting to put a strain on a person's shoulder. I personally use a leather or canvas tote bag or canvas briefcase which in my opinion is a much better option from a style and functional point of view. Nothing looks worse than a grown man in a suit wearing a backpack. I also think that most people carrying bags look as though they are carrying every single thing they own. But I digress, my big issue with backpacks in NY is that we are a city of eight million people and at any given time there are hundreds of thousands of people riding the trains and buses. It is absolutely impossible to get passed anyone wearing a backpack that is extending three feet from a person's back and that's not including the oversized Canada Goose that seems to be the standard winter gear. Not to mention they are completely oblivious to the person they are constantly hitting behind them. Even after many signs and announcements asking anyone carrying a backpack to please remove it, no one ever does! New York's transit system belongs to everyone not just a select few who think that the rules don't apply to them. And please do not bring your pets who are not truly service dogs on the subway and have them sit on the seats. I'm sure you can make it to the nearest juice bar or vintage shop without your pooch. I have faith in you all.

    Do you play tennis? I'd love to see you play! I am a musician and can vouch that schlepping around a full-size guitar or bass is no fun. You're certain to end up lopsided or carrying the thing on your back PLUS a full regular bag on your belly. 🙄
