After moving to New York City, you quickly realize that that downside to not owning a car is having to carry a lot of things with you - which is a challenge because NYC is not an accessible city. There are lots of stairs and uneven sidewalks. So in this video, we are going to go over the 4 types of backpacks that can be used when living in New York City that I recommend and own myself.

I can see this video being super helpful to visitors from Idaho.
Thank you! I'm glad you think so.
OMG I just understood what you were saying. LOL.
@@UrbanCaffeine For millennials will you have an avocado scale?
BRB. Writing a new video.
Ireland, too.
I’ve been using my trusty North Face backpack in NYC for 11 years now. I never go anywhere without it!😅
Honestly i didn't know that there were so many stairs. I also wasn't aware that wagons and such aren't ideal. Moving to New York soon this video was super helpful.❤
I love that potatoes are the unit of measure use. great content !!
Glad you like the video! Thanks 😊
A fellow backpack user! I use a backpack all the time since I love exploring and just walking everywhere. To keep my potato weight low, I only fill half my water bottle (there are a bunch of fountains in Chicago for me to refill it with) and use an eReader (although I use books from time to time since I just love them).
And yes, always be kind and just hold your backpack in a full train/bus!
Backpack users unite! 🎒
Yes I would love to see a video how to pack my backpack the right way
On point my dear Thea. When I'm in Néw York i always use my backpack (mochila ) . Good times !
SACKPACK! Great vid as always 🙏🏾
A backpack is a better option from a safety and security point of view because it leaves both hands and arms free.
Thanks you for making this video
So nice of you. Thanks for watching!
Snackpack
If you are trying to visiting every station on the subway, a small travel bag is a must. I was doing this myself in October in London and you do need to carry provisions with you as you don't have much opportunity to get more
The bag I used was a shoulder bag but it was only big enough for a sandwich, bottle of Pepsi Max and my notebook and pens. My ticket for the Underground was actually in a top shirt pocket for easy access. My phone was strapped to my belt so it didn't move as it was serving as my Stopwatch
I have the bell turned on too. Yes please make a video on how to pack our bags.
Yea this is an interesting topic. I overused the Target 5-cent bags....
Thea, your background is really popping!
That's good that you still shoot arrows. What a great life skill to have [Sunpack]
Thanks so much! Yeah there are so many nuances to being in NY like carts, bags, and rats. Thanks for the video suggestions.
Since you bought up that we use backpacks because most people don't have a car.
Let's make a video about using grocery carts.
Sackpack!
I'm planning a trip to NY with my family and your videos are so helpful, thanks a lot!
Where can I get those Urban Caffeine stickers?
Outdoor backpacker here. While these school bags are fine for low loads in low heat, they’re not really conducive to long periods, high heat, or heavy potatoes.
If you find one of these three fits your use on a given day in NYC or elsewhere, I’d strongly advise you to get a backpacking pack like you’d see outdoors. A good random example would be Osprey brand.
These convey a number of benefits that a Jansport doesn’t have. First, it distributes the weight more evenly if you size yourself appropriately. The shoulder/muscle strain is _dramatically_ lessened.
Second, they don’t rest against your back usually. With a traditional backpack, the bulk sits against your back. You might recognize the results of this as a giant sweat spot in the shape of the backpack on the back of your shirt. You can get backpacking bags where there is a mesh, airy space between your back and the load. This removes this problem entirely.
Third, Osprey bags specifically (and others) are very often water proof and/or comes with an attached cover to keep it rainproof.
In conclusion, if you are planning a day out and you’re worried at all about heat, load, or comfort, I’d warn you to stay away from school packs that aren’t meant to be worn for extended periods of time. Get yourself a nice, comfortable backpacking pack that will last you forever, and you’ll often times forget you’re even wearing it.
As a bag aficionado, this was one of my favorite videos yet - I always agonize over what bag to bring to NY for a day or overnight trip that will be safe, functional, and look cool enough for wherever I'll be going. But tell us about your leather tote - is it Portland Leather Goods?
Hi there and thanks! Yes, it's from Portland Leather Goods. I love it cause it's so sturdy but it is kinda heavy. So I only use it from time to time.
@@UrbanCaffeine Yes same! I have a couple PLG bags and I love how sturdy they are but they're a good few potatoes on their own...
I wonder if Thea can make a video about how to combat roaches, rats, and pest control in NYC 🤔
We bought backpacks for our Europe trip that have hidden zippers that don't allow access unless it is off your back. Apparently backpack pickpockets are common over there. Have you heard of that being a problem in New York?
In another city I've experienced pickpocketing. I haven't experienced or heard of it in NYC. I'd say just watch your bag like any other bag. It doesn't hurt to be vigilant.
Do you know the brand name?
My favorite backpack is a messenger type bag with the single diagonal strap that goes across your chest and has a quick disconnect clip on the strap. Reason is you can quickly disconnect the strap to put the bag on your lap when you sit down on the train, without having to flail your arms and possibly hit the person next to you. (works especially well on a crowded train)
Very nice ,my friends
Thank you! Cheers!
Great upload...watching my friend 👍👍👌
Thanks as always!
@UrbanCaffeine Is that the Portland Leather Goods tote? I have their bags.
Hi Thea!
I newyorked just recently with my sackpack without laptop or the drone, lightest as possible. Valuables should be in the hotel room.
I thought this was going to be backpacks that are pickpocket resistant.
As a native New Yorker, born and bred for 53 years I do have a major issue with backpacks. While I can see their appeal from a health issue not wanting to put a strain on a person's shoulder. I personally use a leather or canvas tote bag or canvas briefcase which in my opinion is a much better option from a style and functional point of view. Nothing looks worse than a grown man in a suit wearing a backpack. I also think that most people carrying bags look as though they are carrying every single thing they own. But I digress, my big issue with backpacks in NY is that we are a city of eight million people and at any given time there are hundreds of thousands of people riding the trains and buses. It is absolutely impossible to get passed anyone wearing a backpack that is extending three feet from a person's back and that's not including the oversized Canada Goose that seems to be the standard winter gear. Not to mention they are completely oblivious to the person they are constantly hitting behind them. Even after many signs and announcements asking anyone carrying a backpack to please remove it, no one ever does! New York's transit system belongs to everyone not just a select few who think that the rules don't apply to them. And please do not bring your pets who are not truly service dogs on the subway and have them sit on the seats. I'm sure you can make it to the nearest juice bar or vintage shop without your pooch. I have faith in you all.
Love your content I just wanted to say be careful in these subways ppl are crazy and it's really sad about the deaths I keep hearing about in the subways everytime I Take it its nerve wrecking
Thanks. Yeah, it's been worse these last few months. It makes me nervous too, especially the incident at Times Square.
subscribed. :]
Do you think it’s easy for pick pocket people to rip you off bc it’s in your back and you won’t feel it ?!
What did you end up doing with all those potatoes? lol Getting a good quality back is key. I personally use Chrome bags. Where cheap bags fail is at seems and high-stress points.
Days of mashed potatoes. 😅 Thanks for sharing! If I need to upgrade, I might look into Chrome bags. They look really sturdy.
Take that metric system! We'd rather use potatoes than kilograms.
The proper way to measure things.
Do you play tennis? I'd love to see you play! I am a musician and can vouch that schlepping around a full-size guitar or bass is no fun. You're certain to end up lopsided or carrying the thing on your back PLUS a full regular bag on your belly. 🙄
Yes to tennis but I'm not very competitive. Just like to rally. I can relate to carrying a bags on the front and back, I call it the Urban Bandolier Style.
Sackpack. Next video: Creative potato recipes.
Thanks for watching! 🙌 Might consider that.
I'm always worried about pickpocketing though
Although pickpockets are not that common in New York, I worry about that too sometimes since I've experienced it in another city. I just avoid putting valuables in the pocket compartment.
After watching this potato video , I'm gonna go and eat some potato made french fries 🍟😋 ! Haha
Enjoy your french fries!
I got my backpacks at below five store it really is five bucks
I find it a real nuisance to take a backpack off every time I need something from it. I use a crossbody bag. This distributes the weight and keeps my hands free for using my phone, swiping cards etc etc.
hi! are you Filipino?😊
Liked the potato analogy but the one you said 1 and 9/10 you only showed 1 and 1/10. 😁
I didn't even notice. haha
@@UrbanCaffeine I think I'm mathematically anal 🤔
Sackpack
Cute [potato] weight comparisons
Thanks! 🌟

Woop Woop! 🙌
Your cute!
Americans are willing to use everything but the metric system
Haha. I honestly think the metric system is better and that the entire globe should use UTC. But convention is hard to break on a large scale.
7.30 before you got to the actual point of the video…
measurement by potato 🤣
Too much potato talk had to scroll to the end of video
Pretty hurts. So I will not be carrying a backpack. No way.
