Love learning the science behind the sayings. So much more than just "ammonia is bad for fish." Thanks!

Is Clint from Clint’s Reptiles your brother? Thanks for the awesome education on fish physiology, chemistry and husbandry techniques. You are a great teacher and I can tell you love your fish. I’ll definitely be one of your loyal viewers and customers from now on!!!!!!
From another mother!
This was really great, easy to digest, really important set of info! I'll be keeping this vid on my Super Awesome Fish Info Playlist to refer beginners too. Thanks Dan and friendly fishmonger crew! 🙏✌️
@dansfish thankyou for finally bringing real science to the hobby. Your info (for the most part) is not founded on opinion. So much real info.
Great video as always Dan appreciate the hell outta you.
As always, always, always a fantastic primer on fish! “Spawned” my interest in studying this further including the role of the fish’s metabolism and the role of the microbiomes of fish gills! (Pardon the pun! 😊).
Dan, you and your team is the best ! Thank you for everything that you do!
Hey Dan. Great video. Well we learn something new everyday. And I had never heard of SAPONIFICATION before. This was a great teaching video. Thank you so much.

So when the ammonia builds up and the fish can't respirate it is that because the water has reached saturation or just that the fish can't process ammonia when they're at that level of stress. Or a secret third thing?
Ammonia in the water prevents the ammonia in the fish's body from being able to diffuse out of the fish's gills, so the ammonia becomes concentrated in the fish's tissues and destroys them
Ammonia nh3 is toxic to fish if ur pHs above 6.9, which is alkaline
Ammonium nh4 is NOT toxic to ur fish if ur pH is 6.8 or below, which is acidic
My understanding is close, but slightly different. At a pH of 6.4-ish or below, ammonia is converted into ammonium, which is much less toxic than ammonia. Do I have that correct? If not, please point me to a source to clarify.
I would buy fish from you, but the shipping is nuts. 😞
I agree...I wish overnight shipping was cheaper, but I still think it is kinda amazing that I can send a fish out tonight and it will get to most of my customers before noon tomorrow. Expensive for sure, but really good for the fish to have such a short transit time.
So if a fish has ammonia burn on its scales how can you treat that and with what? He’s stable but the red spot on him maybe permanent since it was from glass cleaner. I had a friend that wanted to make may tank look nice and anyways when I fill it up with more water I thought I killed my fish but found out that it was actually window cleaner. Anyways one survived and he seems fine but has a red spot on his back. Should I try to treat him with something or leave him alone? I was told this maybe permanent.
I hope your fish is recovering. We have found that clean water and time and salt at 5ppt help a lot. Sometimes we use medications to deal with the secondary infections that like to take hold in tissue which has been damaged by ammonia. Methylene Blue also helps, but I don't have much experience with it.
There's no such thing as 'new tank syndrome', it's a euphemism for people stocking their tank too densely too quickly before sufficient beneficial bacteria has colonised it.
and from being in several fish groups, it is usually newbies with new tanks having problems you listed, hence the name "new tank syndrome"
@@kevwill42 Maybe it should be called new fishkeeper syndrome.
@@andystokes8702 Exactly why I still use fish to cycle my aquariums. It’s all in the math. Don’t load up too early.
@@jay-remedy-plz could always add some fish flakes and a teaspoon of pee, once in awhile. Don't panic. It's organic.. And no fish die, once the levels come down from that... (incl nitrites down). 🍻
What about a water change, get some fresh water in there.
1st again 🙂👍🏻
Your tips are always great thx Just make sure when you add salt you have something between your light and the water, the salt will fry your lights.
