'16 GMC Canyon: Cranks Over But Won't Start

  • In this video I have a look at a 2016 GMC Canyon that was towed in as a crank, no start. Didn't take long to see it had a fuel delivery issue. Low and behold the salt is the cause of this no start. The fuel pump control module got a little crusty we'll say. P12A6 is the code we're going after.

Back in the 1970s I was introduced to low impedance voltage testers. The brand name was Wiggy, witch is now synonymous with solenoid voltage tester from many brands. I have an Ideal brand. Works great for voltages from 90 to 600 ac/dc. Today I use a Fluke DMM that has dual impedance testing. 20M ohm and 3.5K ohm. Works great. Fluke has 3 models with this feature. The 114, 116 and the 117. I have the 116 witch has features like temperature probe, micro amp scale for measurements of flame sensor current and min/max recording witch I use to troubleshoot signals that last 1/5 of a second. Well worth the money and have never had a problem with it. I guess I should add for those new to troubleshooting, this will greatly reduce ghost voltages.

Hey Eric, I had a 1978 International Scout II that was Ziebarted. My inner rear Quarter Panels rotted away. I used zip ties and mechanic's bailing wire to keep the outer Quarter panels from flapping. It was my understanding that to not void the warranty an annual "Inspection" had to be done near the anniversary of the procedure to maintain the warranty. The "Inspection" was to do the process again totally. The "Inspection" clause was in the fine print of the contract and most people didn't have it done. It also applied to the original purchaser only. I got my Scout in 1980 with 24,000 miles on the odometer. I kept it for 9 1/2 years and finally junked it. I enjoy all of your videos and await the next one.

Back in the late 80s, my brother-in-law bought a 1979 scout from the original owner ,who was a lifelong friend of his stepfather. The original owner had used it as a plow truck, and it actually still had the snow plow on it. It was a rust bucket when he bought it, and he attempted to do a restoration on it and put it back on the road. He started to take it apart and then lost interest in it. It sat on the farm for another 10 years, and when they tried to haul it to the junk yard, I believe the Frame broke in half. It was one of the most rusted vehicles I had ever seen in Maryland.

The fuel pump driver module on my southern salt-free 2006 F-150 was rotted and the metal part of the case was actually cracked in half and deformed. I happened to notice it when I was installing some trailer wiring so I snuck a new one on there before it actually failed.
It turns out that Ford decided to put the bare aluminum case of the module right against the steel frame of the truck. The aluminum against steel causes "galvanic corrosion". Some of the aftermarket ones come with stand-offs that address the Al+Steel contact issue, so I went that route ($40) rather than spending $220 on an OEM part that comes flawed from the Ford dealership.

Another quick, accurate SMA diagnosis by the great Eric! This owner should be happy his truck was towed there instead of a GMC dealer, where he could've been soaked for a bad ECM or other!

Brilliant place to store sensitive electronics there GM. That's as good as the little pool they make to bathe the fuel sending units in.

GM design priorities are Assembly driven. Service and practicality are always a Lower priority. They locate parts and modules based on ease of assembly, balancing the line processes, and reducing assembly time. Salt Sucks 😁 I love Tennessee

Had a no start other day on a 2010 Colorado , found a broken wire from ECM to fpdcm , wasn’t bad to diagnose but I told the kid working on it who works for a parts store it’s not always a part failure, you have to diagnose!!!

Well Eric don’t believe that little module would be a problem down here in Watkinsville Ga. But anything’s possible hahahaha but if I had a Canyon or Colorado pickup and it Quit and wouldn’t start and no fuel pump sound, thanks to you I would look there first. So i really appreciate your diagnostics tips. Thanks again and have a great day bud.

I've always thought about moving up north because of the oppressive heat we have here in Oklahoma but after seeing what apparently your winters do to vehicles in just a few short years I think I'll stay here. Unbelievable how fast they rot out from rust and corrosion.

F150s also have the fuel control module in the back on top of the rear axle. Even without the salt environment, as long as there is water present the aluminum housing of the FCM will exfoliate because its in contact with the steel axle (dissimilar metal corrosion). Their fix is to provide plastic isolation bushings with the new FCM to separate the two components.
