In episode 12 I had the opportunity to use the Mooney to do a bit of traveling for work. Rather than an 8+ hour car ride, I was able to make the trip in 3 hours with the Mooney. This long cross country also allowed me to get a better grasp on the fuel burn of our 63' Mooney M20C.
Stick around to the end of the video to see the fuel burn results, or click on the timestamped link below.

You are one of the fantastic pilots out there that learns from there adventures and is able to say when your not as knowledgeable as some that the private license in nothing more than the license to learn.
Amen. Thinking you know it all is a good way to make a hole in the ground!
What a great experience being able to fly a long distance like that. Congrats!
Thanks Dave! It is quite empowering!
A pilot's certificate is a certificate for learning... nice job! I get 8.5 GPH in high cruise in my Tiger, but with fixed gear and 135 KTAS at 8,500. Your Mooney did great! Fly safe and fly often!
Thank you for the kind words Gordon! 135 KTAS is awesome! Isn’t it great to have an efficient plane!
Enjoy all your videos. I own a 69 C model. Since February 2021. So learning quite a bit from your videos. Don’t burn out.
Right on man...a new video is uploading right now! Congrats on your Mooney!!!
My great grandfather fought in Michigan unit during the Civil War. Grandfathers had kids when they were older. One of the girls I work with, her family is in Michigan. She's headed to the lake at the end of this month. Enjoy the videos. Keep making them. Get your instrument ticket! :-D It's time WELL spent!
Thank you kindly, I will be making the instrument a priority!
Don’t feel bad! I had the same thing happen the first time I had to go to .725 frequency. Happens to all of us. Great vid!!
Thanks so much, learn something new everyday...right?
Great to fly along with other Mooniacs...
Go Mooney!
Make a note... BK posts all of their user manuals on line... so many hidden details in their old hardware...

Heck yea! Thanks for being here AC!
Beautiful-nothing runs like a Mooney! I own a G model.
Thanks Ken! I’m so happy I found the Mooney!
I Also have the G! Love my Mooney. Only 190 ever made..!!! Where are you based at??
Right on, very unique. I’m based out of 8D4 (Michigan)
I'm curious how much is typical fixed animal costs?
My father and I are both looking into becoming pilots ( we'd be 4th gen pilots)
Between the two of us a fixed expense of 15k flexing up to 20-25k ( based on use) has been deemed agreeable for us
Is this reasonable?
Great flight, I agree with focusing on learning from mistakes, and having a positive attitude about learning. Best I’ve done in the Archer II is 8.8 GPH, awesome to see such a fast Mooney that has similar fuel flow in lean of peak ops!
I really want to upgrade my engine monitor, allowing me to fly as economical as possible. All in good time! Thanks for coming along for the ride!
Great trip. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy all your vlogs.
Thanks Joe, I appreciate you watching!
There's a trick to retracting the gear with the "Johnson" bar. Rotate your hand to the left and grab it with your thumb down and on the right. After you pull down you can bring the bar back and down with one continuous motion. Bumping the yoke forward at the end helps snap it into the detent. (Edit) I now see a similar previous comment.
All good, it’s great to hear the wisdom of others experience!
I see that no one has taught you how to retract the landing gear in one easy movement. You took the landing gear lever in your right hand with the thumb in the up position, this means you have to let go of the landing gear lever in order to reposition you hand on the lever in order to complete the action. However, taking the gear lever with your thumb down, you can complet the action in one smooth movement. Try it, you might like it.
Charles, I can’t say I’ve thought through it too much! I will get in the plane, and try your method. If I’m one thing, it’s open to better ways. Thanks so much man!
I always chk before t\o any items (i.e. passenger seat belts) that may obstruct the gear well.
Definitely! I missed that on one takeoff, and fought getting the gear up. Lesson learned!
Glad to have you home
Glad to be home babe!
Any thoughts on installing shoulder harnesses? Recent changes in the FARs make it much easier to modify aircraft (minor alteration and a simple logbook entry) to add them.
In a single engine aircraft, shoulder harnesses are one of the best devices to keep you alive following a loss of power and subsequent off airport landing.
It is most definitely on the upgrade list. It can be difficult to prioritize what comes first, but shoulder harnesses are toward the top of the list.
I like your panel man, simple and nice. I might get an old mooney and if I do I will do mine just like yours.
That’s very kind! I like it as well. Of course I always want more upgrades...in time they will come.
Welcome home Cory! Well done!
Thanks dad! Up next is our trip to go table saw shopping!
Great video. I'm in the process of picking one of these up!
Enjoy the journey sir!
Good video. I like your channel. I think you said you have a partner in the airplane. Good way to decrease the cost with no downside. I have a Cherokee 140 with two partners. Works real well. Fly about 200 hours a year between the three of us and we often fly together so we are getting experience for half the price. It’s fast enough and climbs well enough for our purposes. The Mooney is nice though, maybe someday we’ll upgrade. Good luck in your flying. With Covid 19 the Part 121 hiring may slow for a few years but you probably won’t be ready before that anyway. The videos are entertaining and it looks like you have a very nice family.
Thanks a bunch Steve! I do have 1 partner in the plane, and we might just entertain another of the right one comes along. I appreciate you being here for the ride!
Wow I calculated 30 gallons fuel consumption on my head and was not far off. Great ride.
It was a blast, I was very happy to see less than 9 gph!
You may want to consider adding the engine analyzer... Actually, a better tool to lean compared to EGT. Shoulder belt is a must, a few Mooney pilots died during otherwise survivable accidents by hitting the instrument panel by their heads. When I had 20C, I bought my shoulder harness on Ebay, there is a company that makes them for Mooney and sell on Ebay
I’ll check out EBay for shoulder harnesses. My partner and I agree that harnesses are a must.
@@MyTimeToFly I checked Ebay and looks like they are no longer selling there. But, the upgrade kit is still sold at Aircraft Spruce: www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/alphabelts3.php?clickkey=6658703
Give us a tour or talk to us about your plane. At how many ft were you flying? Which are the instruments you look more at? Etc.. It’s a great video. Subscribed ✅
Thanks for the ideas man, and for being here!
Had fun flying with you here!
I’m so glad to hear that! Thanks for coming along on the journey!
How funny that you were struggling with tuning the KX155. I had the EXACT same issue yesterday. I ended up tuning in ATIS on comm 1 (Garmin 430) and googled the answer when I got home.... Small world
We’re all in this together! I felt stupid, but it certainly felt good to learn something new!
Nice flight and nice Mooney!
Thanks much Oscar!
thanks! interesting flightdata!
My pleasure Bregt, thanks for watching
I'm starting to love the mooney more and more with your videos!! thank a lot for Sharing!! What was your cruising speed?
At 23in & 2,300 RPM I cruised around 135 knots. Up to 140 knots at 24 & 2,400.
I run 24” and 2400. It never fails. I run 147knot airspeed. ‘67 m20f
Very awesome. I was running 23 squared in an attempt to gain some efficiency...but might start running 24 squared more often!
Loving the numbers!!! 😍😍😍 lol
@@MyTimeToFly I have found my C model uses less oil at 2300 than 2400 or 2500. Also - for some interesting information regarding the square/over-square mythology: czcams.com/video/A1fmNFWNHD4/video.html
Remember to use the following information when able. An "aft" CG will give you a higher cruise speed and a lower stall speed. If you don't know this...you need to hit the books. Always go for an aft cg...within limits...of course. Good luck.
Thanks Larry! I did have the back seat loaded with my luggage for just this reason. It also tends to calm the tail of the Mooney down a bit. Always within the limits of course!
Great job!
Much appreciated
In fact. I recall some of the unusual traffic calls from South Bend approach. I believe I flew past you a few thousand feet lower. Crazy.
That’s crazy! What model plane do you fly?
My Time To Fly a Cherokee 180 out of South Bend.
Awesome man! I’ll have to swing in sometime!
Another great video Corey. There was a question I meant to ask from the other day, but at the end of this video I got the answer. My new question is, how often do you fill up on a regular basis for normal flights per month? This video also saved me some time as I was going to watch a previous video for the third time to see some guages on your panel😁. I'll be sending you some Mooneys soon to have a look.
Thanks Jerome, I’m happy to take a look at the planes! We try and keep the back plane full of fuel pretty much at all times. Yesterday I flew, and only burned off 5-6 gallons, so I didn’t fill it. But we typically keep it topped right off.
@@MyTimeToFly awesome. Thanks man.
Great flight, thanks for let me ride along. What were you doing in MO? Flying the shoreline of Western Michigan is breathtaking, and I am sure can get very busy, as it is a great view. Looks like you cut off between South Haven and Michigan City, I was going to see if I could recognize St. Joseph when you flew over. Also looks like you got the Mooney down to a science now - great work.
Thanks Russell, I’m certainly gaining some confidence. I had family to see and worked by installing the best hand tools (TEKTON) in some new stores in Missouri.
I thought the view looked familiar, I flew into Muskegon just a few days ago. My wife loves flying the lakeshore.
It’s gorgeous, I’m blessed to live in this part of the country!
I’ve watched this video numerous times and enjoy it more each time! Video is super clear and the close-up shots of the panel are great. I noticed you were flying southwest down the coast of Lake Michigan but your compass was reading 290 and you set the dg from that. Is the Dynon affecting the compass??? Seems to me you were flying 218 degrees on the first leg. The compass should not be off by almost 70 degrees...?
William, that is a great observation. We’ve come to realize quickly after that trip that our compass has failed. I’m not sure if it was the Dynon that caused it or not, but it seems like a possibility. This is a prime example of getting a bit to used to only using the GPS for navigation!
My Time To Fly I was thinking at that compass heading you should have been headed to Oshkosh!!! Lol. Keep up the great work! I’m actually looking at a ‘64 M20E which is the 200 HP hot rod. It will be a project as the engine is nearing TBO and needs TLC to get upgraded with an IFR GPS too. I’ll let you know if I get it.
Very cool William! I’d love the extra 20 HP...but 180 will have to do for now! Good luck in your search!
What setting are you using on your GoPro hero for audio input settings? Line input or just standard mic?
Line in. I tried the mic in, and it gets really bad.
My Time To Fly that’s good to know! Thanks, I appreciate it.
Based on your lived experience. Is 10-15k annual fixed expenses reasonable for Mooney ownership?
( Mainly on keeping the annuals and maintenance up) our airfield here in incredibly affordable for hangar and tie downs
I truly think it is, as long as you stay away from anything with overly complicated systems. For example, it’s likely not reasonable for an Ovation, or even a M20K. I would say a J or “less” and you’re likely going to be good.
Hello, how do you compare your DC One X against the H10 13.4 you seemed to wear previously in a piston aircraft? Thanks
There is no comparison, they are amazing! It took a while for me to get used to the lack of noise, which I simply interpret as “different noise”. Bottom line, I love them.
Full disclosure, they are my first pair of ANR headsets. So I can’t really compare them against the competitors (Bose or Lightspeed).
@@MyTimeToFly Thanks
Ive heard mooneys do 175knots.
Is that at full throttle continuesly?
What altitude gets close to that 12k?
There are a wide variety of Mooney’s flying out there, from 180hp to 300hp (maybe more). There are certainly models that are 175 knots or better, just not mine.
@@MyTimeToFly thanks, Iike all mooneys
Right on man, I appreciate you being here!
Man I just found your channel. Love the content, subscribed. Also what's your height? You look like you're taller than the average person. I'm 6'2 and looking to purchase a Mooney M20C as well. I just wanted to get your opinion on how comfortable you are in the cockpit.
First of all, thanks a ton for the compliment!
I’m 6’1” about 210 lbs and the C is super roomy for me. Shoulder to shoulder can be a bit tight, but that’s common in every plane.
@@MyTimeToFly thank you for your prompt response. Blue skies. I'll catch you in the air brother.
I weight 195 lbs so this gets me really excited!!
Right on, no problem at all!
Are you based at Sparta KCMY? If so I’d love to meet ya sometime as I fly a Mooney out of Y72
I’m Sparta, MI (8D4)
Did you get the AP fixed?.Thanks
No, no luck there. But on a positive note, it flys so straight I haven’t found much need for it.
There is a prop RPM limitation not to operate between 2000 to 2350 for long periods
In my specific Mooney it’s 2000 - 2250
My tach for my 62C says not to operate long periods of time in that RPM range, when at or under 15 MP.
Very interesting. If I’m under 15, I’m landing...at that point I could care less about rpms, it’s all the feeling in my butt!
My Time To Fly exactly
So I have a 62C and I’m told the max flap speed is 100. I see people blow through that every week and it makes me cringe. Do you know what your published FE speed is? I’m not hating...just trying to learn and wondering if my numbers are wrong. Love your videos!
Thanks Jake! I also subscribe to max flap extended speed of 100. Although I’m told later models go up to 120 with no structural change. Honestly, I’ve forgot to retract the 2 pumps after takeoff a couple of time, causing me to break Vfe. It doesn’t seem to have caused any problem, but I don’t intend to make it a habit.
My Time To Fly hey man I brought that up because I did it on my last flight on both departures and then I’ve seen it on several CZcams videos. I’m sure it’s fine at 120! Lol
At least I’m not the only one! It’s good to admit our mistakes!
My Time To Fly learning every time. I have about 60 hours in my Mooney so still learning the ropes plus the ownership stuff, which is a blast.
So much fun!
I checked the RPM for Lycoming 0-360-A1A is 2000 to 2200 2300 for injected looks like You had a great flight
Thanks Nick, I had a blast!
Good Michigan
Yes sir, it is a wonderful state!
I'm looking at a few different planes, and really like the Mooney M20. What size are your fuel tanks? At 8gph how far can you fly? I'm hoping to find a plane with at least a 500mile range. Great videos!
Thanks Rony. I’ve got 48 gallons of fuel on board. I’ve got a minimum 650 mile range, but with some more conservative power settings or altitude that jumps to 800+ quickly!
@@MyTimeToFly That's awesome! I like hearing that. Hopefully i'll be able to find a decent Mooney in the next year or so. Thanks!
Good luck man, they are fantastic airplanes!
Should have a placard on the panel
Nick Shultz wouldn’t it be a radial arc on the tach?
Steve, you are correct. My tach (which is digital) has red LEDs in the “not for continuous use” range.
You took off with flaps on this takeoff?
I use flaps on every takeoff. They might not be necessary with a light load, but they do allow you to get the gear up at a slower speed
@@MyTimeToFly Really enjoy your videos looking into a m20c to purchase in new year. Let me know if you are ever in NJ area
Will do, the C won’t disappoint you!
What did you use to have your Checklist on your Ipad?
Scott, I use FlyQ. Although checklists are not a native function, I use their documents tab for checklists. Here’s a link to my how to video.
czcams.com/video/mQpyEzm7dro/video.html
@@MyTimeToFly Thank you, I use FlyQ as well and have looked for a checklist feature...
I think you’ll be happy with how this functions. It works really well in split screen mode as well! Let me know if you run into any snags!
@@MyTimeToFly I will, fyi Dynon Avionics has a Checklist builder program that you can download for free on their website. It also uses Excel as the format. It is intended to upload this Excel file into the Dynon EFIS (which I have as I have a Dynon HDX in my EAB aircraft. But I do like your larger font version.
Awesome, I’ll check the Dynon builder out as well.
