I’ll never get bored of watching Gene. My favourite metal drummer 🤘.
Fun fact about Gene. He could play the fastest, most aggressive drum track ever designed on the surface of the sun and not break a sweat.
This is true, also he would tower over the sun, he is a giant.
Glad to see joy in your face as you saw that same thing on his face! Thanks for checking "Atomic Clock " at work, cheers mate!
I love all things drums! When I see mastery, the joy is always clear to see.
I had the pleasure of watching Gene up close during a warm up for Death. We had talked for a while and he invited me to watch standing behind him 😁Awesome drummer and world class human
It's like each of his limbs has it's own brain, and Gene's brain is conducting all of them. I'm so jealous of this legend's ability. I saw Anthrax and Testament live in concert. Anthrax's drummer had a family emergency and couldn't play for a few weeks so Gene Hoglan, whos in Testament, filled in on drums for them. He played Testament's entire set, come off stage and drink an energy drink and go right back out and play Anthrax's while set. He did this for a bunch of dates, not just one. Legend.
Devin Townsends Hear Me and Singularity are 2 drum excerpts that are incredible and by 2 different drummers from the same album
Singularity actually has drumming from all three drummers that played on the album - Anup Sastry, Morgan Agren and Sam Paulicelli
neither are Gene so
shoutout to the old-school camco pedals! crazy that this dude recorded shit like darkness descends and individual thought patterns on those bad boys. gene nowadays is using pearl eliminator pedals but he still has the camcos lying around.
So effortless looking...
...pure economy of motion.
A millionth degree black belt of drumming.
Gene has 2 DVDs which might explain his double bass technique.
Gene is built for SYL.
But that fill was from Death' Symbolic 😅
Gêne Hoglan rules supreme.
I'm a little late but just have to say,.. After watching this I don't see how anybody could ever again blame an single chain pedal with no foot board on any of their bass drum playing shortcomings. Hoglan's a Beast as Always! It took me about 15 hours (drumming time) to finally nail this track, very tricky to say the least.
and just like that....Gene has seen this and shared it on FB lol
Thank you so much for informing me. I am stoked!
(08:49) you do not use words like "this is on par" when talking about Gene Hoglan. he is... something different. completely self-taught, left-hand drummer that plays right-hand drum kit, he is unique. i first saw him in The Philosopher video by Death and was somewhat surprised that a guy his size can even move, not play drums at that speed and with that precision. there are many great drummers. there is only one Gene Hoglan..
No can mess with the Atomic Clock!!! And he using the ankle weight to build his power and speed and he can play better with the weights on than most drummers can play without them ... Gene is the Man!!!
I loved your completely honest and open intro....I'm a sub now, good stuff...
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Brenden Small said he liked working with Gene because he had such a sharp memory . got to see him with SYL and Dethklok . amazing skills.
If you notice all the foot cam footage was filmed separate. He has clear kick batter heads on during the regular footage. Then white batter heads are added and the floor tom is also gone to be able to see the foot work better during the foot cam footage.
I did not realise that at all! I do my reactions 100% live without too much prior knowledge of what I am about to watch. If I have watched it a couple of times I may have spotted it but I am not that eagle eyed lol.
Love this song!
Neil Peart and Joey's death wrecked me..2 of my all time favorites
He taught Dave Lombardo to play blast beats while he was a drum tech.
This is not true. He was not their drum tech and he didn't teach him blast beats. He showed him how to do double kicks and he was their lights guy.
Man the guys iconic the atomic clock, you've still got Chris turner with Thomas Lang dueling drums and for a possible Eloy match Alex Rudinger,. Keep up the good stuff mate i enjoy watching your production progress and opinions
You gotta check out his Death philosopher. He has a DVD the atomic clock and he's on drumeo.
Heels down playing the speeds he does is just stupid Great!! Gene is 1 of the Greatest to ever play drums
love to see your channel grow! keep up the great vid’s :)
as a suggestion, maybe you could check out some death/black metal drumming. the genres are a bit hard to get into, but it’s a true treasuremine for sick drum parts! i’d suggest ‘ov fire and the void’ by behemoth, or ‘exercises in futility V’ by mgła, they both have live drum cams and some amazing drum arrangements!
Gene is THE MAN!
Single chain drive Pedals it doesn't matter what gear you have it comes down to the playing..Gene is just stupid Incredible!!
He does indeed lead with his left. He uses the weights for the first chunk of a set before he has to play the intense stuff, that's when he takes them off and flies
If you listen from the ten minute mark on you can hear his right foot on the pedals slowly picking up speed on the gallop hits as left foot leads the pattern
What a beautifull reaction sir!!! we can tell you know what you are talking about
Gene the atomic clock hoglan he has prob played with every metal band going well maybe a slight exaggerate but not to far off you can look him up on youtube and he may have his own site i know he makes tutorial videos for sale
Gene Hoglan, Mark Zonder, Bobby Jarzombek these 3 and you have seen everything.
he sells instructional dvds i believe
The atomic clock.
Another top metal drummer who injects some tasty jazz, latin etc chops into his playing and also changes his leading foot consistently is Blake Richardson.
Yeah, Gene is da man. Such a cool dude. His fav drummer is Stevie Wonder btw. You should check out Sean Reinert and George Kollias 😉
He has dvds man with his stuff you find easily. ;)
Gene is a fucking animal syl wouldn't be the same without him
Gene is a lefty on a right kit. Can play either way really. But most of his double bass is lefty lead
Check out Darkside from MGLA playing "exercises in futility v" live.
Try lighter ankle weights works better like 1lb per leg or 2 lb total. 4lb total I think maybe work up to that. Play to songs it will work your legs and definitely helps the ankle motion for this fast hauling double bass long passages. He plays heel up his heels.are just very low
Did you notice he plays with his eyes closed some of the time too?
I did, some people have mentioned he may be blind before or partially sighted?
@@JasonSayersDrums Lol. He isn't. He has just done drumming pretty much his whole life. he knows his equipment and where it's placed. He is considered one of the top drummers in the world, and that's not an overstatement as you've seen. He's toured with some of the top bands
He got his first drum kit when he was 13 and he's over 50 now.
66samus playing Devin Townsend (Strapping young lad singer) Hear me!!!
Gene is a lefty that plays open handed. It is deceptive.
And he can swap because only lefties can do that pretty much. I am a lefty, that is how I know.
Tomas Haake is good, but Gene is a lot more accomplished drummer imho. 'Bleed' is the pinnacle of Meshuggah's drumming. Gene eats songs like that for breakfast.
better be good cause if its not youd be wrong ;)
Gene keeps switching lead foot - annoying to watch :)
What's the point of these reaction videos?
