1866 Crochet Sontag | Just Vintage Crochet

- Let's make a beautiful Crochet Sontage from 1866! it's actually a nice relaxing pattern ( well, until the border lol )
you will need some #4 worsted weight yarn / Aran
and a 5mm Tunisian hook and a 6.5mm crochet hook
I used about 500 yards of the Scarlet and about 200-250 yards of the black for the border
to alter the size simply start wit more starting stitches, this will depend on your size needed, this pattern will fit a small/small medium
you should also add more rows on the back and the 2 front panels to suit yur needs, they are made to fit so it's hard for me to give you an exact stitch count, but for reference, the lower back point measures 1.5 inches for the small/small med

As a “retired”living historian, I wore a Sontag in the fall and winter events and it is amazing how warm you will stay. I am going to make myself one for modern wear now.
Very cool!
Funny, so did I! Lol
I had wore a Sontag a week ago during our Dickens Wintermarket.. Outdoors it was so nice to wear it. Inside i had to take it off. So im sure im gonna make one for myself
I enjoy wearing mine on cold winter days during events. Perfectly warm.
I am not a living historian, but i am making myself one right now! i have some sunset colorway cotton from an older projext i no longer love and i think this will be perfect for it. and in cotton means i wont die in my 90 degree fall and spring temps!😅
I fell in love with the style shawl, but I am not a crocheter, so I found a knit pattern for a Swedish or danish fisher woman’s shawl, and I’ve been wearing it for a couple years now. It’s the same idea as yours, wraps around your waist and I made mine tie in the front, but I used plain garter st. Not as fancy as yours however it still keeps me warm around the house in Maine winters. 😄
Tricot in French knitting. faire du tricot, to knit ... I'm Romanian and for me "a tricota" means to knit ... Tricot can refer to a type of fabric that is used for tshirts undies etc because is sort of an inelastic knit ... So this simple Tunisian crochet is probably called a tricot because looks more like knit stitching on the wrong side and curly like you said (at 50:44) and knitting tends to curl 😊but is also inelastic a durable in the same time. Hope my two cent input is helpful 🙂
That's interesting. Thanks for adding some extra context.
SO cool to see vintage tunisian crochet projects!
Sontag is a new term for me, but I love the garment. I do not crochet but surely it could be made of fabric. It has the functionality of a vest but is so much more feminine than many other vest styles. Sometimes I need added warmth around my upper body but prefer to keep my arms unencumbered. The shawl effect about the shoulders and snug waist will give visual balance to a long full skirt.
I'm going to make this according to this video, but also thought about sewing one.
What fabric would you use ? 😊
I believe Bernadette Banner and Costuming Drama have each made what you're thinking of. I want to say it's an Edwardian capulet, but I don't think that's the correct title? I fell in love with it after seeing both of their videos, and I'm so happy there's this option available. More accessible for me. 😁
Agreed. I love how it massively enhances an hourglass shape because I'm all about the bombshell feminine look, myself. Vests are boring.
This is so funny to me because im wearing my pocket shawl crossed across my chest, JUST like this... I didn't realize there was a real piece!❤
Adore this Civil War Era handcraft. This looks vintage as presented and with your modern update you have made this 68 year old maker very happy! I always appreciate the 'raw'' crochet demonstrations even though I know you don't like to show the 'goofs', I need to see that frogging is NOT a bad thing; you don't like something-just start over! Thank you very much for sharing, Corrina, and a blessing on your head for all you do for our community.
As a wise crocheter once said, 'Frogging is part of the process.'
This is one of the absolute BEST! tutorials to teach someone how to do this - nice pace - nice viewing of hand/hook action, and excellent verbal instruction - I have subscribed as I already know whatever you teach will be be easily followable and I will be able to create my own piece
Thank you !!!
I like the way you make nice neat edges. Thanks for the detailed instruction. The antique sontags you show at the beginning are very appealing to the modern eye. The idea of a warm garment that doesn't interfere with movement and daily work is timeless.
O my! I've been procrastinating on learning tunisian for yrs now. THIS is the project that caught my eye LOL. I'm doing this left handed. Had to start over a bunch of times because I kept messing up the increase. Finally made it to 33 rows tonight. I'm using Red Heart camo colorway yarn (not the best to see stitches -another added complexity) - seems a great choice to be "battle ready" this year😂 Thank you for resurrecting these historical pieces. Your patience is near infinite. Happy 2024.
Wonderful!
During my reenactment days a sontag was worn by many, many women. They are wonderfully warm and safe to wear around the fire. Thank you. Great teaching, we should all have one in our closet to wear today!
the 1860 pattern that you have a picture of at 0:07 (on the right) is a knit pattern. I modified it and crocheted it for my daughter who loves vintage anything. I even gave it a weave/waffle look by alternating blocks of front post and back loop work. She wears it a lot during winter.
That's called basket weave. I made one, too. A yarn eater! The pattern is from Go dey's Ladies Magazine, and The Ragged Soldier has both crochet and knit versions for folks to make.
*unsolicited opinion* the mor i look at the picture the more im convinced that a. the artist wasn't totally sure how to draw what was made 😅 and b. the border, if truely meant to be done with single crochets instead of tunisian simple, must have been intended to be done in long rows (sideways) instead of short rows. Also, c. if intended to be single crochet, they must have meant to have separate instruction for the inner border vs the outer border because i see the vandyke in the inner portion, but not the outer....
I'm just trying desperately to make it make sense because this is beautiful and i wish i could recreate it 😂 Bless you for always making it all come together!
Its french! Ay paul lets - its like saying Hey Paul let's... that's one way to remember it.
Epaul is shoulder in french. Epaulets are anything that decirates the shoulder. Think the military fringe or shoulder pads/armour.
Awesome find thank you for the upload I want to try this!
Anndddd im an idiot and got too excited to share my french side, you literally looked it up and said it correctly right after i resumed the pause. Oh well! More comment engagement for this video! You gained a new subscriber at any rate :)
Thanks for offering some extra background info. Her comment sections always have awesome and enthusiastic folks sharing a wealth of historical background. This is definitely the place for vintage patterns.
I knit one sontag ages ago and swore never again. Now that I crochet more than I knit, I might have to try this one.
I so want to watch but the Christmas Eve Gammon is nearly cooked and I've still got the dinning table to clear of all my craft stuff. Oh also the tree needs more than just lights on it. It's almost 16:00 here is Wales. I wish you a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New year.🌲
When I read this I thought ok Crochet Sonntag as in Sunday lol😂thought it was misspelled. Didn’t realize there was such a thing as a Sontag. Awesome. !!❤❤❤❤
I made a Sontag for a costume, I liked it so much, I made 2 more to wear around the house in winter. I used a different historical pattern and knitted it. I just got some lovely yarn as a gift. I would love to make this, I just need a Tunisian crochet hook.
Thank you for all your hardwork in making this pattern more accessible !! You highlight how much bravery, patience and design skills to go with a written pattern that has no technical support available.
You’re an inspiration and a treasure.
Im nit a shawl wearer but I must have this! Also love that it is tunisian crochet. If anyone wants more tips and tricks TL Yarn has several beginner tutorials for tunisian crochet, which is where I learnt
I love TL Yarn! That is where I learned to tunisian crochet as well! She makes it so easy to follow (at least for me) and my first tunisian crochet project was her gingham baby blanket. I did it in cream and two shades of sage green; it turned out beautifully! And I love THIS channel! Getting to see historical patterns come to life is so amazing and inspiring. Please keep the patterns coming!
@@bekkahangel the first one I made was the mulberry afghan for my sister's newborn
@@jules_2.0 I bet it turned out just lovely!
Hi, I made a baby blanket using Tunisian hook and really enjoyed it. When I started crocheting again, it was 40+ years since I'd done any crocheting . I've really enjoyed everything I've done. I love watching all your videos. Mistakes and all. Your videos are very informative. Thank you for sharing.
I've always been told that the hook sizes for a tunisian crochet project should be a size or two bigger than they call for. It's always worked for me to get the correct size and gauge to increase it. Have a very merry Christmas.
That's interesting. I'm getting the hang of normal crochet now but I've only trifled with Tunisian so far. What accounts for the difference?
@@serenity6415 Tunisian seems to be a tighter stitch as you work it. That smaller hook will cause the fabric to curl on you as you work. I would suggest just trying it with small swatches with different size hooks to see it and decide what you like best. Borders and cuffs make the curl no big deal for me.
@@abilitycrafting864 Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind.
I have so much going on at the moment, but this will be great for my mom who has a hard time getting a sweater on by herself...(she is always cold) I will be adding the belt to it as in the picture, so she can tie it on. Love this one!!!
Wonderful!
There is a Sontag with a belt. The others have the front parts button in the back, and the ties on the back wrap to the front to secure it.
Thank you for this clear explanation of your tutorial. Right color background & the color choice for the project . Easy to see the stitches. No repeat music to drive me crazy. Thank you for the history information too. May I say you have beautiful hands🥰
I was surprised to know this was made in Tunisian crochet. I thought this is rather a new way of crochet .🤔 Wishing you a very Happy New Years 2024. ❤🙏🏼💕
Dearest Corrina...I took a bit of a pause to wish you, and your, brother, and your husband a Very Merry Christmas, and a Happy and Blessed New Year...as well as to all whom you love....
As well as everyone who may see this. 🎉🎄🎅🎁🎊
And for those who don't celebrate Christmas...may you have Happy Holy Days, as well... 💜🙏💜
I thank you for this little Community you gave created, please know, your inclusion of us in your 'livestreams' and the way you talk to us, like we are with you, has meant more than you can imagine.
I know that at times, you must hear us yelling at our devices, trying to get your attention...lol. 'That' is how much we love what you are doing in your own challenges in reading some of these Victorian, or older Patterns, written by those with their own ideas or communication styles. Challenging, frustrating at times, but always a joy, when sharing with those who seem to be up to the challenge.
I have enjoyed every minute you have shared with us.

Thank you so much! and Merry Christmas to you and yours as well and a blessed New Year!
Amen sister to every word and MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and yours!!!🎄✨
@@mariankay6482 ... It has been a very quiet Holiday here. I'm not used to it. I hope you are having a Christmas full of lots of love
💜💜💜
@@lauriekurad thank you. Very quiet here but tomorrow is going to be another story. Our family will be gathering at my brother and sister-in-law's house. All their kids and grandkids from 3 months old to 23 will be there. We don't have any children so I just love on them all!
My mother brother and one of this 2 kids will be there as well. They are coming from Taos, New Mexico. We live in the Texas panhandle.
I hope the beauty and the really joy of the season warm your and let you know that even if it's quiet, you are not alone and God's love surrounds you!
It's been a stranger year than usual. It's hard to find the joy I usually have. It's just different this year but the joy is there. It's in the quiet times that I find the peace.
Love in Christ
I never thought I was up for Tunisian crochet but after watching you, I think I’d like to try it =D
Working on making a Sontag now! It’s my first time doing a Tunisian crochet pattern, but your video is great at explaining how to do it. Great video
I love your way of increasing. Much better!!
I might have actually been hypnotized into making a sontag. It's mid summer in Australia, but I fell asleep listening to this, found some bulky weight where the dye lots were too different for my original plan for it, and now the arms are at my waist.
Lol would that work for boring housework I wonder? Before you know it, the house is clean and you can get back to crochet. It's just beginning to be blistering hot in Southern Canada. What better time to make myself some winter gear. I can't NOT make now that I've seen it. I'm on my way to Michaels to get yet more yarn.😢
@@serenity6415 high five for folks making winter wear in mid summer! We know how to plan!
@charliechristie9916 well I know if I don't ride the novelty train now and wait until fall, I'll procrastinate until spring.
Oh definitely a good plan to ride the inspiration. It's just so hard when the work is too hot to hold on your lap. The funny looks from folks in air conditioned cafes while I worked on it were also hilarious. @@serenity6415
My New Year Resolution is to make this 🥳 I can’t wait to get started on it!
I’ve also been attempting to make it but it seems like a 5mm hook is way too small for it to even fit a small. Are you having any luck working out the proper gauge?
This is lovely! I like how the edges of Tunisian crochet are nice and regular. You can see where to put border stitches.
very pretty. thanks for sharing
I love it! You do such a wonderful job explaining and editing the stitches to bring current! ! Thank you! ❤
Thank you so much!
I tried to knit this, and failed. So good to see this, makes me happy. I'll do my best to follow your instructions and make my "dream come true" 😉
I absolutely love tunisian crochet and antique & vintage patterns. I’ve also wanted to make a sontag shawl for a long time. You have a way of uploading patterns I would immediately be interested in, and this is no exception. Thank you and Happy Holidays!! 💜💜
The images showing original context are special. Thanks for those with the tutorial.
How exciting!!!! I just got my sewella hooks n now you have presented the perfect pattern for my first ❣❣❣❣
Edit: oh duh, project. I was so excited i forgot to put in the word. 😂
Thrilled to discover your vids. I am baginning to use older English patterns. You sound soo much like me as you figure out whaaat they really mean. I am enjoying and molting with this lovely challange. PTL for modern terms and process and videos, tutorials and community.
I've been making tons of swatches learning different tunisian stitches! It's so fun and the return pass is so satisfying for some reason 😂
Yes,I agree the black is far nicer against the blood red,
I love Tunisian crochet! Last year year I made my family Christmas stockings using the Tunisian knit stitch and they turned out gorgeous!! This pattern is beautiful!
I have an old book that has a Sontag knit pattern. I don’t knit, but I am convinced it should be made with crochet as it contains a checkered pattern. Never done anything like it and I am really nervous, but it’s so beautiful!
This has inspired me to try again.
Thank you and Merry Christmas!🎄🎁
I would love to have that pattern! I love checkered patterns!
I created a basket weave pattern Sontag, they look great! I have several crochet Sontag patterns for anyone.

GREAT TUTORIAL! I could never have understood the pattern with out you!
Loving this tutoriel. Only learnt to tunisien crochet last summer so its my biggest project to date. I used a 7mm for the main body and 8mm for the body which i attached directly much easier. Now making a second one for work . So thank you for making this video. 😊
I am just working on a version for my niece and I think I will make one for myself. Lets make a trend. This is the new "Harry Styles Jacket" 😁 love it! Thank you.

Thank you for helping me pick up a new skill! Excited to learn Tunisian!
That is so beautiful! Your work is amazing, Corinne. I gave Tunisian a try when I was young, back in the dark ages. Now that we have electricity and lights I may give that another look. My mind no longer swirls with its youthful thoughts and I'm happier learning new things! Also, i can't find my pot! - Coughs. - 💕💕💕

Corrine you did an awesome job recreating this. I tried to knit one years ago, it wasn't a success. Just need the perfect yarn to do one again with your help in the tutorial. 😊
I LOVE IT! WELL DONE!
Very pretty! ❤
I'm catching Dickens fair vibes. Only 10 months to go. I could probably make it by then. and it's worsted weight!! so many of these patterns call for like thread. I don't have the time or eyesight for thread. but I do love watching you create with it.
Very interesting because this final product looks like it could be styled for modern day very easily
This channel is so intriguing I luv it!
Merry Christmas Eve!
Thank you Corinna! I have been wanting to make a vintage Sontag but am stuggling with the old crochet terms and hook and yarn sizes. I have also been wanting to learn tunisian so this pattern is perfect!
