I have had anubias rot a few times, Twice I caught when the plant was about half way gone, using a scissors I removed everything that was soft, and a bit of rhizome that the soft parts were touching. Plants survived in both cases.

It’s only after one has been in the hobby for years that one learns the true value of live plants. For almost 8 years I kept fish and and artificial plants. Over filtration was my motto given at the local PetSmart. Fast forward the last two years and all my tanks are now planted and am taking extra filtration away!

I was lucky to start out with a heavily planted aquarium- I went on vacation for almost a month and my roommates did not touch the tank except to feed the fish. No water changes, not even water top offs. If it wasn't a jungle in there, I'm sure I'd have come back to a fishy massacre, instead they were all happy and healthy.

I did a single dwarf sag pot in a 125 gallon. Over the course of 1 year, that single dwarf sag carpeted the entire tank. Only downfall was it out-competed my monte carlo and crypts and choked those out.
Pogo octopus was another plant that took off insanely in my tank. I used to trim it like a hedge every other week and it came in as dense as a boxwood. Mine became an insanely dense plant by 'hedge trimming' it this way. Fish loved it and a lot of 'surprise' fry grew out in it! The bottoms were a tad bare (only the top was dense and full where i kept hedge trimming) both those 'naked-knees' (to borrow a term from rose care and growing), were hidden by other plants and drift wood.

Aquarium Coop's customer experience is top notch! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I got some plants and a 'Fluval Fresh & Plant 2.0' a few years ago, and the plants came in healthy and beautiful (I'm from Texas, so they had to ship across the country.)
What impressed me most however is how they unyielding kept to their return policy:
I had waited months for the release of Fluval's 'Planted 3.0 LED' and had grown tired of waiting, so I settled for the 2.0 (the best at the time.)
The light arrived and worked perfectly, but 20 days after purchasing the 2.0, the 3.0 was officially released! Coop has a 30-day return window on Lights, so I requested a return, and they accepted without question. I then ordered the 3.0 (Fluval Plant 3.0 LED) from Aquarium Coop (who had it in stock the same week it released) and the rest is history.
My 3.0 is still running strong to this day, and I love!

Over the last month or so, we have ordered several mentioned in the above list so we can see what would work in our tank. All are doing wonderful!! We love them all!!! Our 3 lily bulbs came just last week because they went out of stock briefly, and all had little stuff growing off of them already. My daughter's now already has sprouts and is beginning to show leaves. So fun to watch while we are waiting on her tank to cycle any day now. We did order all lower light plants that did not require co2 since we are beginners with plants. Very good price! I am glad I watched this. I planted my octopus plant mentioned (I can't ever remember real the name) all together. I will have to separate the stalks. There were 4 in there! Thank you!!! Will keep ordering from you all!!

Great topic! I have 3 of the plants you mentioned. My dwarf sag is in a nano tank and I have to dose with iron occasionally to keep it from dissolving away. Now its healthy, but very slow growing. I must have more light on it than I thought because it stays about 1-2 inches tall. A small group of ottocinclus make sure any algae is quickly removed from the sag's blades.

For my tank the single plant that transformed it the most was the Dwarf Lilly I bought from Cory's place. It took over the tank and has continuously produced huge lilies and flowers from about 3 months onward. The flowers are huge and grow out of the tank so I have to leave the lid up for them. I have to trim it weekly or the large pads shade out the rest of the tank. I have many other plants but that was transformed my tank instantly.

Would you please make a video that goes over different water parameters for plants? It seems to be the consensus that plants are easier to grow in soft water. I have hard water and am interested to see how that impacts plant growth and what you can do to combat it. I have ordered quite a few plants and it seems crypts do well, but have trouble with almost all other stem plants growing well. I have a sting ray that is on for a majority of the day. I use easy green and have used root tabs as well.

If I would have know how big it would have gotten, I wouldn’t have planted any other plants. It’s since bloomed and now, it might be finally dying back. Thank you for your videos Cory. I adopted a poor goldfish that sat in the classroom of one of my colleagues for about a year in a small bowl and after finding your videos, I immediately moved him into a larger tank and now I’m fully addicted to the hobby. Planting the tank up and planning my second one!!! I do have 2 questions though: I notice that my goldfish is smaller than I feel like he should be after doing research. Did he spend too long in a small space with no filtration? I bought a 10gallon for him bc that was the quickest thing I could get my hands on. Seems like he has plenty of space, considering his size. Do I need to upgrade also for him to keep growing or does he likely have internal growth problems? I check the water parameters and do water changes multiple times a week. Thank you in advance for answering. I’m really eager to learn from you!

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  Před 4 lety +1

Depends on how long he was in a confined spaced. I think since you're loving the hobby, you'd enjoy a larger tank as well. If you can get a tank from the dollar per gallon sale. I'd grab a 29 gallon for this goldfish and see if you can't get it a bit larger to a more normal size. I think you'll have more fun with it as well.

I'd like to personally vouch for crypt wendtii bronze being nearly un-killable. My first plant, I'm using a desk lamp and it's huge!

I definitely recommend the plants from these guys, they have came very healthy for me and Im all the way up here in Michigan. The plants always came in one piece and full of color and just healthy. My fish have bad habits though and eat them for some reason. I have corydora that are garbage disposals and mystery snails and shrimp and they just non stop eat and eat and eat. So plants do not last long for me. My baby dwarf tears I planted in the substrate with the pot and everything to let them carpet. Within 24 hours there was nothing left they just got eaten. I was sad

I love the plants in my aquarium but i need help in my goldfish tank. Its a 55 gallon, goldfish, dojos, hillstreams. Plants don’t grow. If they do they get eated by my goldies. What do you suggest?

Hey there! If you use root tabs instead of liquid ferts, can you leave the charcoal in the filter?

I’m always interested in propagating my plants and have accidentally found the Lilly plants shoot off runners if you put high light on them.

I wish you have sort by fertilizer like easy green plants or root tabs plants option in the website.

  • @getthatcornouttamyface2461

Dont know if it was officially "anubias rot" , but I have had luck two separate times with plants that started dying with mushy rhizomes by raising them to where the leaves were partially above water level. This seems to really jump start their growth and help their vigor. Both times I was able to position the plant totally submerged after a couple of months and they have done well since. One was nana petite but I don't remember what the other variety was, they were purchased at my LFS. I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has tried this.

    Hi Cory,
I have a degree in horticulture, but I'm new to aquariums. I have a planted 20 gal aquarium. I purchased a generic water lily bulb at petco. It has only grown 1.5 in high. The leaves are no bigger than 1 in long with stems about 1 in long. It is covered with 25+ tiny heart shaped leaves. It's put out three bulblets in the time I've had it and they are perfect replicas of the parent plant. In other words, a micro version of the smallest water lily I've seen out there. Everything else is growing well. Am I doing something wrong or did I accidentally get a variant/mutation that is tiny?

I dig plants out of the ditches that stay flooded. We have some Boggs around here. I use them in the koi pond. Can I move them to tank life?

I just ordered a tiger lilly bulb, dwarf grass, water sprite, and Anubias nana 'petite'. I also accidentally ordered 2 thigns of fertilizer, but at least it will last my 75 gallon tank about 140 weeks haha.
