  • I was commissioned to create a life size Staffy (Staffordshire bull terrier) sculpture as a memorial sculpture!
    I have done a few different dog scrap metal sculptures in the past and they are so much fun to create.
    It has been a challenge and an honour to be given the chance to create something with such meaning.

    I am a self taught scrap metal sculptor from somerset in the UK.
    I use lots of different processes in my scrap metal sculptures to create the finished item the main type of welding I use is mig welding, there are some blacksmithing techniques that I regularly use along side more high tech equipment like the cnc plasma cutter.
    I like to think I am able to maximise the appeal of my sculptures by using these different processes and that they result in better sculptures and with a bit of luck (and hours of learning how to edit) some good videos.
    I want to say thanks to.

    xtremeplasma.ecwid.com/
    For their continued support with what I do.
    Any enquiries about welding equipment check out aip and for cnc plasma goodness then you cant go wrong with xtreme plasma. These are both companies I have dealt with and spent my own money with so can give an honest opinion about them both.

      Hi, I'm always happy to have any constructive feedback. I watch an artist called ten hundred and that's what he does, I've thought a few times how much better it is than the generic CZcams music I use, definitely something I'm keen to give a go. I really need to get back to making some videos!!

      Ah cool, with regards to the air ride mine is fitted with the kit from the polish company and I wouldn't recommend it, you might be OK if you've got a camper conversion because of the extra weight but when mine is empty it's horrible, loaded up in the back it's fine though.

    I all, I have wristwatch spare parts. What would I use to bind them together and bend them to make a miniature sculpture?

    • @ALoadOfOldScrap
      @ALoadOfOldScrap  Před 2 lety +1

      To bend any metal your going to need to use heat, depending on the material will decide how much heat, I'm guessing its mostly brass so a plumbers blow torch might work. As for fixing it together maybe solder would work but in all honesty it's not something I have tried much of.

    • @ALoadOfOldScrap
      @ALoadOfOldScrap  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes it is a mig, for the vast majority of what I do the MIG welder is the best tool for the job, more refined than stick but not so much as Tig. Hope you're enjoying your class.

    Hello, so this is MIG welding? Not brazing? I'm interested in starting up but I need to know what kind of welder to buy.

    • @ALoadOfOldScrap
      @ALoadOfOldScrap  Před 3 lety

      It is mig welding yes. There are two types of mig welding, flux core (gassless mig) which doesn't require gas but can produce messy welds with lots of spatter or normal mig welding which uses a shielding gas much tidier welds and less clean up after, hope that helps a little.

      @@ALoadOfOldScrap I'm a beginner, I would love to do a piece like this, can you recommend a beginner welder? Can oxygen acetylene have the same effect /safer? Thanks!

    • @ALoadOfOldScrap
      @ALoadOfOldScrap  Před 3 lety

      @@dec23 oxy acetylene is definitely not safer and also more difficult it's generally used more for torch cutting or heating to bend metal these days rather than welding, also if you wanted something to heat metal so you can bend/manipulate it more then an oxygen-propane torch is perfectly fine, less volatile and cheaper (it's what I use). As a beginner mig is the way to go 100% for welding, it's what I use on pretty much every sculpture. If you are UK based try giving aip welding supplies a call and say I recommended them, they would happily go through different options to see what would work best for you.

I do realise that there is a lot of skill and experience required to make something as good as this but I would love to have a go at recreating one of my pets. It seems like getting the initial shape right would be the hardest part.
