    In this episode we show you how we passage plan on Takaza without the use of expensive tech systems. Do we use paper charts or are we fully digital? We also go into detail about some of the apps that help us along the way!
    We started our adventure in summer when we made the decision to leave our jobs and move aboard our 28ft boat. We finally set sail north in September, but were delayed by a series of issues. Now back on track, we are cruising the North East coast of England on our way up to Scotland! Join us as we share our experiences of sailing and living aboard our small boat.

    Great video I didn’t realise just how much there is to do before you set sail.. very informative and confidently delivered well don James and Gavin

    Very reasonable approach. We do the same, have the reeds almanac handy, some paper charts, tablet and phones for navionics and the laptop connected to ais via open cpn. The most important is to know where you should be at what time to avoid some dangers (Bill of Portland for example) and to be able to take advantage of the tides. Not to mention the checking the weather of course! Few sources to compare as well.

      I love the Almanac best book I've bought. The AIS on open cpn sounds interesting, I will have to check it out.

      Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it and found it useful. We came over to the Neverlands on the Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry before Christmas, we loved it. We show it in Episode 8 Living in the Moment. Our boat Takaza has also crossed the North Sea from Scarborough UK to Ijmuiden 14 times as part of the North Sea Race with the previous owner.

    I have nearly bought one of those very nice but expensive modern chartplotters for my Etap 28i but have always come down to the same decisions you have - thank goodness for Navionics, Imray and Windy - the holy trinity of yacht navigation.

      Yeah we love Navionics and windy, we are just looking at getting a bracket to hold our ipad in the cockpit which will make it a bit easier.

    That auto-route was awfully close in and took you over some lumpy seabeds (and on the wrong side of a cardinal 😵) You might find smoother water a mile or two further out.

    • @gavin_and_james_sailing
      @gavin_and_james_sailing  Před rokem +2

      Thanks for watching, its not an actual route we are using it 's just an example of how to use Navionics. I was hoping no one would notice the cardinal!

      @@gavin_and_james_sailing 😄As an ex-programmer I would worry about software that ignores safety features like cardinals. That one was not dangerous for a sailboat (I think it was 4m below CD) but what if it did the same with a 1m depth? It was interesting to watch because your approach is quite different to ours

    Loving the content! I’m still very new to sailing but doing my day skipper theory online at the moment. I’m enjoying learning all the things I’d never even considered I needed to know about navigating! So very useful to see how it works in practice though, and particularly in my local waters! Thanks so much for the tips ⛵️

      Thanks Helen, glad you are enjoying the content and finding it useful. I did my Day Skipper theory a few years ago in Scarborough and then the Yacht Master, really enjoyed it. We have another video coming out tomorrow that you might find useful for the Day Skipper too.

      Thanks and glad you enjoyed it. I agree most people use digital now as well as paper. I was quite surprised it wasn't covered much when I did my shore based yacht master , that was about 5 years ago though so may have changed a bit now.

    Weather on east coast changes by the hour, in my experience forecasts are seldom accurate not sure about taking a weather based decision 7 days before - too many times went out in a forecast Westerly 10kts and faced a NE 20kts! I also now just rock up at Marina's got tired of being told that they are full jeopardising my plans particularly as on one occasion a friend turned up anyway without calling same day and there was plenty of space. Clipper AIS receiver is still current and sold online, reliable back up to iPad if it ever packs up, like the mini plotter - I have exact same set up. Watched this to make sure I hadn't missed anything but all good!

      Thanks for watching and yes your right the weather does change all the time, it's especially crazy at the moment. Good to know that they still sell the AIS, make me feel that its not so ancient after all.

    Nice video lads. So glad not many harbour in Ireland have bad restrictions on getting in apart for tides. Tidel gates not a big issue. Do you keep a written log while on passage? You seemed to tuck it away with the paper charts...

    • @gavin_and_james_sailing
      @gavin_and_james_sailing  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for that and glad you enjoyed the video. No we don't keep a log but you're right you did see me tucking one away. Our boat used to sail over to Holland every year as part of the North Sea Race with the previous skipper and he used it to keep a log. If we were doing a long passage off shore we would use it but still working up to them experiences yet.

    Hi James, excellent video and it was a "semi-tutorial" for me :-). I have my Day Skipper practical in May and you helped really simplify passage planning. I know I'll have to use paper charts on the course but its a great overview of the steps needed for passage planning. I really liked the way you list out the hourly tide times and wind direction throughout the day. Quick question...is your tablet an Ipad or another brand. Thanks again both of you. Fair winds!!

      Thanks Chris, so glad you found the video useful. I remember back to my Day Skipper and Yachtmaster and they always made things seem more complicated and they never actually covered any digital systems! Our tablet is an Ipad, we have both got all the apps on our iPhone’s too, so sometimes we use them as well. Good luck with your Dayskipper and if you need anything just let us know. 😀⛵️
