My sister has a toad that hangs around her house that we call Deadeye (cause one eye is messed up). One day Deadeye showed up with a partner… a few days later there were over a dozen Deadeye juniors my sister had to keep from hopping into her house 😂

Another thing I love about Rin's animals in sweatshirts is that she does in her drawing what Beatrix Potter or other classic anthropomorphised animals artists did in their works: she puts the characters in a version of her own world. What I mean by that, she finds the whimsy in our every day reality by putting her own cute spin on it. It makes me look at our modern world in a different way. I'm one of the people who grew up on those artworks I've mentioned and in general consumed mostly classic 19th and early 20th century stories, and a side effect of that is that for me whimsical often means old-fashioned. Like it just seems cuter for a squirrel to have a fireplace and drink tea than to have a laptop and drink soda, y'know? But Rin's art makes it not so. Like a frog with a phone, not immediately appealing to me. She makes it absolutely spot-on charming. I love that. Again, makes me find the romance in reality, not just in stories I've heard before. And it's more of what real artists do, i feel - they work with what they know, what they actually see, only then transform it through their own lense. They tell fairy tales that happen to people like them. They find the universal in their own singular experiences.
That seems pretentious to bring up about a cartoon illustration of a frog in a sweatshirt lol but I wanted to tell Rin about this way her art inspires me since it's been a personal revelation to me.

The little frog is so cute. You should draw a sweatshirt animal convention
Tbh what I really preferred in the sketches was the outline done in the colour matching the thing, so orange on the sweatshirt (and on the sign hypothetically on the final picture). I feel like that added something unique to the style and worked well with the flatness of gouache.
But of course the bottom line is always I love your art. It gives me so much inspiration both with the beauty of the final piece and the freedom and creativity of your designing process.

Question Rin: I'm trying to get better with my composition and line art. There is 1 thing I'm wondering about. Tangents!
I know you shouldn't have any tangents in your drawing, as it might confuse the viewer, but I would like to know how to best avoid them... Or can you even make them work?
Like a picture only made from tangents?
I would like your opinion please, since you are a professional.
Or could this be another video? A 'Filling a spread in my sketchbook with tangents' in the series?
they are best to avoid if you know what they are and notice them. I mean, just for me, if I see one in my art I cringe and rectafy it immediately. Tangents are also something you wanna be sure to avoid in the early stages of the art, because that is when they will be the most disruptive. you honestly just have to move stuff to avoid it. which is why its best to do it sooner rather then later when you've already added details. Its not really a super beginner thing to worry about. so I'm excited its something you're interested in learning about.

Just so you know. Whitch i think you do. Gouache is like watercolors so it can be activated with water if it dries. The only deference is that gouache is a bit more opaque.

honestly there are a few tricks. a horizontal guidline across the face is helpful. but i find i can accidently draw that crooked. marking the eyes as dots or dashes helps me figure out if the eyes actually look good in that spot before i draw them in. good luck!

This is adorable! I have been obsessed with frogs from a young age so anything frog themed makes me happy, haha. I love your art style so much! For future reference, the paintbrush that came in the art box, that rounded, flat brush shape is called a filbert brush.
The name comes from the fact that the shape resembles a hazelnut (filbert nut)
2:28 was the perfect opportunity for an “oh my gouache”
The brush is a Princeton SNAP brush Filbert is the shape of the bristles, love the cute 🐸 frogs.
Those colours instantly made me think of Ahsoka from The Clone Wars!
