Need a printer? Buy one of the few left that print CD and DVDs

  • If you need to buy a new inkjet printer, why not buy one that prints on CD and DVDs?
Well, one reason you might not is that it is hard to figure out which printers available still print on a CD or DVD so you can
    compare prices and features.
I needed to replace my ancient Epson Artisan 700 and spent the most of the morning tracking down all of the printers that will print on a CD or DVD I made this video showing the results.
If you don't want to watch the video I summarized all of the available printers and prices I could find below.
Note that this is what is available today in May 2017 so at a later date your mileage may vary.
I chose the Canon MG7720 to replace my old Epson primarily because it was low cost and was the first printer I found that would take a CIS or use a refillable cartridge. So far it has worked very well. it takes longer to print than my old Artisan but the results are better and it is dead simple to copy and print a CD or DVD cover.
if you have a printer that prints a CD or DVD, even though the formats are declining in usage, you will be able to produce your own music or movies or DIY videos for sale. You will own the means of production. It makes sense to buy a printer with this feature if it is the same price as a printer without it.
I hope this information helps you.

Thank you for this list. I will definitely look into it. I have an old Epson that I use to scan my art. I don't use the printer part of it anymore because ink is so expensive and I could never get the generic refils to work on it. I used to have a printer that made CD's. You put a white one in and it would print. But it broke too. I'm working on a fictional video game. The box art is easy enough to make but I'd like to put a blank disk inside with my art on it and make these for friends as well so I am once again looking for a printer. This is helpful and I hope I find one right for me. I've noticed this about manufacturers being embarassed. They should out right say it. Lots of people still use DVDs and CDs. I don't like kindle books. I want a real book in my hands. If I ever publish a book I want a physical copy in stores not a digital one.

Thank you for a very useful article.
In spite of the alternatives I strongly believe that Cds and DVDs will continue for some time to come. They are more secure than flash drives and the latest are highly reliable with polished printable surfaces on some makes.(JVC is one.)
In point of fact I have some Cds of dubious quality with data stored 20 years ago and they are still fully readable.
My own dedicated printer is a Primera Signature 4 (2000yr.) but I believe the ink cartridges are becoming hard to obtain now.

For those that have Epson and Canon printers that can print to disc, how much time does it take for the printer to actually start printing?
I had a Canon ip7220 and got so annoyed with that I junked it after I ran out of ink. Sometimes it would print almost right away. other times it would dance around for almost 2 minutes initializing cartridges, spinning rollers and other noises. I would much prefer a dedicated disc printer, but haven't seen anything I would call "affordable". Used Dymo DiscPainters pop up from time to time, but I don't know very much about them or how reliable they are.
Still shocked office supply stores are still selling stick on paper labels, especially when there is so much information saying how bad this is for the disc and/or the players, unless that's no longer a thing anymore. I noticed brother and dymo now sell paper label rolls, so maybe it's no longer an issue?

I've started thinking about getting a good color photo printer for printing on CDs and also thin glossy paper. But I'd only use it occasionally - my everyday printing is black and I have an old laser printer for that which is cheap to run.

Hi Debra. I also had a MX922. Great printer for CD and DVD printing, but if you dont use it regularly - I.e. print less than once a week) the ink will dry and clog the print head. YOu can try cleaning and reinstalling the print head or ordering a new print head, but those always were temporary fixes. Same thing for the Canon IP4200 I had before the MX922. What a drag. I used CD labels years ago, but there's always the possibility of the label drying out and coming loose at the worst possible time (inside the DVD player!). Back to writing on DVDs and BluRays with a Sharpie. WIsh someone would come out with a CD / DVD only printer for occasional use.
