Conversation with Michael Peterson when in Australia filming The Still Point. He was very nice, and seemed cool. RIP MP more info at www.DancingOnWa...
I just read his biography. Great book. Perhaps the most competitive surfer of all time. I'm sure he would have given Kelly a run if he was surfing in the 70's. MP knew how to win. Nice to see him chatting so freely considering everything. A true legend of our sport.
"I used to do it for yards" ... classic! Yes my friend, you sure did. Great post showing the thoughtful side of Michael that was rarely seen back in the day. rest in Peace MP
Such A Legend was MP on The Waves. Sadly just listening to him speak I can tell that he had Social Anxiety Disorder. I have this condition as well. He was always comfortable on the waves as it was his best way to associate to others. I'd say that he was a guy only comfortable with certain peoples company. I know how he felt. But it is so good to see this posting with MP having a fair bit to say.I can sense that he was a Great Guy to converse with if you knew him well. Surf in Peace MP.
Behavioral health is sorely inadequate in most countries. I had a schizophrenic family member that was finally diagnosed accurately and with the proper medication and counseling lived a pretty swell life. I loved his surfing. No twirlies, hops or similar garbage so popular with young people now. Just power turns and cutbacks and down the line smooth lines. RIP Michael. Thank you!!
One big drug affected wreck is what I'm seeing. Legend? Don't think so. He should be remembered for being a very talented surfer who threw it all away because of drugs. And that's about it.
Alan Thomson not that it matters, but most people are aware of his schizophrenia diagnosis, which is a hugely debilitating and incurable disease. What is shocking about MP's story is that he managed to achieve so much in such a short amount of time - - all the more incredible when you realize the cards were stacked against him to the extent they were. RIP MP.
@poet in a paper bag 'we' didn't all take drugs. Didn't take them, wasn't interested, could see the harm that they did even as a young teen. The majority of my mates also didn't take them. So I could be a little biased in my opinion, and, we're all still alive still enjoying the surf.
@poet in a paper bag so now who's being condecending. My comments about myself? I didn't take drugs because I chose not to and didn't get sucked into the spiral lifestyle that it promotes. Piss in my own pocket? When did I do that? Was it the fact that I said 'I didn't take drugs' ? Get a grip mate. Sounds like you're in self denial.
@@alanthomson5331 If you knew anything at all, you would know that Michael, never took drugs as he was growing up. He was too smart too accept it. These are words from his mother, as well. It was when his schizophrenia really kicked in and his mental health degraded that he turned to drugs. How bout you actually do your own research before making terrible accusations of a man whose life really was destroyed by his mental health.
old surf stars are very sad......MP ...WAS A TRUE CLASSIC...... IN HIS SHORT PRIME BUT MELTED INTO insanities........ LIKE MANY OLD SURFERS WHO ONCE SHREDDED THE BIGGEST WAVES AND SERIOUS CONDITIONS!
Oh he was, some of his ideas on marketing and simply "winning" were uncanny with the difference being he would put them into practice! Not just surfing but dealing with difficult social situations oddly enough. Sadly you are right, he would not be comfortable going into a crowded Hotel for example but dealing with a business-like situation he was masterful. It is as if these day to day challenges gave him an escape similar to his surfing, a sort of focus away from his fears.
Unless you were there you will never know, unless you used heroin you will never know , there is no winner , we all lost something or everything ,rip mp 🙃
You two are wrong on too many counts to list. Don't be an uninformed, prejudiced, glib-tongued, disrespectful idiot, or you may end up posting a comment like Luke Dempsey.
MP lived in my old granny flat at my mothers house for over 10 years and I came to love the man like a father
Was that on the hill ? He walked down Musgrave past my house
RIP mate....a true legend. How could ANYONE not give this a thumbs up.

The word legend gets thrown around a lot, but he is a true legend
